Really?

This idea is SO BAD, I can't even understand why anyone would bother to patent it.
Maybe they wanted to donate money to the patent office?
At least now there's a patent owned by a large corporation that no other would ever want. Quite an accomplishment.
Sony sucks.
Didn't the Gizmondo have something like this? Where you had to watch adverts now and then? :?

Biggest issue IMO with this is that you probably couldn't use the console unless you connect it to the net,
but I guess that's the plans anyways with all these rumors about "no more physical media, only downloads".
Do not adjust your monitor, this is really happening, Sony has done far worse than this an they will do it again.
Sony sucks and the only thing I like about the "current" generation is that I had a choice to get a different console that got most of the support and games.

Really? Really? Like, like Really? This just DESTROYED the chances of PS4 being a good console. I mean, this is a terrible idea! This is one of those situations where the company just screams "WE'RE GREEDY!"
I would assume that this would only be on online based free games such as DCU. Then it's fine with me but if I buy a 59.99 dollar game and there are trying to pull off this shit then SOny can go to hell.
Can't say I have very high hopes with Ps4 etc to begin with,
sound and graphics would probably not be much grander and the thought of having to download all games for probably the same price just seems dumb.
Top that with the fact that you probably can't utilize half or even any of the functions on your new game system unless it's hooked up to the web.
"You don't have a internet connection? well sorry, then you can't use the console you just paid for I'm affraid"
I for one tend to play my games on console whenever I DON'T have access to a internet hookup, while being on vacation or such.
I'm so glad I mostly play Genesis games.
Another reason why I'm really happy with my gaming PC. Sure I don't have all the exclusives that the PS3 or 360 has, but most games worth playing this gen have been ported to the PC already, and I don't have to put up with bullshit like this.
I think during the next gen PCs and phones are going to whip the consoles asses. You'll probably see a lot more people sticking with their older consoles longer also. Similar to what happened with the PS2 after the PS3 came out.
The current game industry is such a massive clusterfuck of companies constantly trying find new ways to screw over the consumer. My room mate tells me that I need to get an 360 and forget about the Genesis. I just shake my head and don't say anything.
That's because if they tried it with PC, people would just download cracked versions to avoid the advertisements.
It's easier to prevent such a thing with consoles, obviously. It'd also encourage people to figure out methods of pirating, however.
There be no winning for the big guns. ;)

We'll have to disagree then. If my game can be interrupted by ads at any moment while I'm playing then it can be as free as it wants, I'm not playing it.
It's like being given a turd sandwich, it might be free but I'm still not eating it.
I've stopped watching TV too, but at least on TV the shows are stopped at a key point. It leaves you wanting for more but it's not like there's an interruption during a key action scene or dialogue.
According to the patent you could be shooting at some guy in a multiplayer game and the game would stop in the middle of it. That's MUCH worse.
I wholeheartedly agree. Its amazing how so many people spend time with crap they probably don't like, only because its free. If a free game had this kind of annoyance, i'd rather buy a different version or a different game without it. Or spend my time with something else.
Releasing 100 patches per game, charging for disc locked content (Crapcom) and game endings (squareEnix), and now this? Gaming has truly gone to shit. I feel bad anyone who is into modern gaming.
My favorite part is when people go "OMG UR ENTITLED U SHUDN'T BE LOL!" at like anything, including not being able to play a game that you bought at launch (Diablo 3) due to shitty DRM and servers that make it impossible for you to play single player without being online. Because you know, if you pay 60$ for a game you shouldn't be able to play it if the company doesn't want you to and have the right to withhold a refund.
From a business perspective, it's a great idea to patent streaming advertisements on pause screens. As long as they're not disruptive to the game, they're lucrative for both the platform and the ad product. This is even better if the platform itself is mostly networking based. Patenting completely disruptive advertising in games would keep others from doing it, and give Sony the licensing revenue if it happens.
I don't see them going completely insane and ruining modern gaming here. They're not that stupid, and jumping to conclusions is pointless. Microsoft already spams the Xbox dashboard with advertising.
Evidently Sony plans to interupt the gameplay of their games, with the most intrusive avertisement ad format: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/a...w-you-ads.aspx
This has to be some kind of joke, who could possibly think such an advertisement format would be a good idea.
Broken system is broken.
This and the fact they are basically killing the second hand market, and making everything locked to a specific account, for next generation has completely discouraged me from buying a ps4. I have to buy several copies of a game, because a potential partner, room mate, children in my household wants to play on their own account? Not going there...
It depends on if the games are free or not. Free TV has ads, so why shouldn't free games? Now if they make you pay AND they add ads, THEN it's evil. :)
^I didn't think of it like that. Can you imagine? Streamed games a la NBC or Fox? That'd be something.
Sony patented it. They didn't implement it. There's no reason to hate them for this. It's likely it will just be added to their courtroom arsenal whenever they get sued by competitors, or choose to sue them for using a similar method of generating revenue through similar advertising.
Business is business.
Which is why I hate these kinds of patents... this is clearly an obvious advance in the field. Like I said, TV has done it for decades, so what makes putting it in a game so worthy of a patent? Because they filed the paperwork first? Patents shouldn't be issued for obvious advances in a field.
True(well Sony would still be evil from all the other crap they pull, just not from this), but the game will still not be worth playing, even though It's free.
To the other posts: First such patants shouldn't be allowed period, rather it be a good concept or bad concept(baisic evolution concepts shouldn't be patantable, It's like trying to take out a patant on online play or DLC/expansions), and 2nd only two companies are this dumb to impliment such, Sony, and Square, which come to think of it, would be a good thing, because such a poorly designed format would doom any company that pulls this(Square is on the verge of bankrupcy like every 4 years, and Sony will be lucky if they can afford the development of the PS4, to finally be rid of either of those companies would do wonders for the industry).
It still sucks. Imagine playing a Silent Hill style game that sucks you into its world but interrupts you every 30 minutes for ads. It would destroy the atmosphere completely. What if its for free? I'd rather pay for an ad-free version of the game instead of wasting my time with the ad-filled version. Accepting crap just because its free? Here, take this turd, its free.
I'd rather do something else to spend my time.
