I somehow missed this thread, but, @ OP: I wouldn't pay $20 for Mario 64 cart-only either.
And Mario Cart is $30 but Mario 64 $20!!?!! It goes to show how satisfying it is to live in this world where my least favorite genres are made to be more expensive. Yay world!

My copy of Super Mario 64 cost the exact same price, while regular N64 games cost $5 and Ocarina of Time cost $50. I got it at a local store called EZ Electronics, they have excellent deals there. When I bought my Sega Dreamcast, they gave me a burnt copy of NesterDC for free!

$30 is something I'd expect from a gaming store run by old guys. Which worked to my advantage when I bought Ikaruga from them for $27. However this was at a fleamarket. This is unacceptable. I mean you could probably go over to some other guy and the price would be more manageable. The most I'd pay for Mario 64 is $10. I got it for $5 and it was worth it. However I do have to say the game is overrated. Simply because its Mario means it's good to the community. However I feel the game was a venture into 3D and was not actually that great. It isn't bad, but I'd rather play the older installments over 64 any day.

if they were too expensive people would not be buying them, items are only worth what people are prepared to pay.
Im after a good few games to finish my saturn and MD collection, and they are expensive ones. Especially PAL region as we have it far worse than you NTSC people. It makes me feel good to know if i'm ever really stuck for money i can get shitloads of money for my games, and the price will only go up. My games are my retirement money as the pension system over here is FUCKED!
EDIT - Basically, if you think a game is too expensive, don't buy it. Go get another one and stop moaning

The auction for the box and manual ended with a high bid of $66. I mean really? I was actually almost able to get the box and manual for only $23, 2 weeks ago but forgot about the auction, I rather just wait for the right price to come than be one of those people who buys an item with a ridiculous high price for not being patience and making others believe that's how much the item now is.

You should look into the arcade collecting scene someday. For a lot of arcades games the difference between buying just the bare pcb and the bare pcb with the box, artwork, and suction cup is around 500$. I remember reading a funny post on cavestg forums where someone said "d#mn, that's one expensive suction cup". People pay crazy money for a lot of common things that you can pay someone to make for less, just because it comes from the company the made the game.Quote:

With declining arcade cab prices and increasing console game prices, arcade gaming is looking kind of viable actually, haha. But considering the cabinets, they're not that expensive if you just look around for the deals.

It's true, I'll admit. But it's certainly not that simple. Like any market there's a lot of factors that go into the price of games. IE how much services like rarity guide thinks you should be paying for things, or how one seller get's really lucky by managing to sell a really common game for a large amount of money and all of a sudden other sellers get the idea that they should be getting the same amount. I'm not complaining. I'm probably going to sell my copy of Earthbound and buy a Super Everdrive.
I'm done with collecting for the American SNES and NES, if I find cheap games that I'm interested in I'll buy them. I've found that I've saved a ton by buying for the Famicom and Super Famicom, even with all the added shipping costs! Why buy the NES Ducktales 2 for 200$ when I can get the Japanese version for 15$?
No need. Building a supergun is cheap. Why buy a big heavy cab when you can buy or build something that lets you play your arcade games on a regular tv, sound system, and a home arcade stick? I built my supergun with around 200$ worth of parts. For that money I got some very nice sticks and made a very nice looking supergun that works with any arcade board I throw at it. You just need to do your homework first and enjoy this sort of thing. You can also alternatively pay someone to build one for you.Quote:

Also I don't see how someone can be a retro sega fan and not into arcade stuff....Sega was HUGE in the arcade back in the day. I do understand why people take their time getting into arcade collecting. The pcbs are huge, have no cases, and are more expensive than most console games. Superguns are pretty much all custom made so there's no such thing as a cheap supergun, which is why I built one myself. And then there's the arcade boards that used a suicide battery which mostly got thrown out so now they're rare as f#ck because barely anybody kept their non working arcade board until someone found a way to revive it many years later. Arcade collecting certainly it's "plug in and play" which is what makes it difficult. And also if you want a great arcade board that's hard to get expect to pay lots and lots of $$$$$$$$ and take forever just to find the board for sale.
$14 was definately a score for the yoshi's island box, I can't believe the other one went for $66 when there are two complete copies with bin's of $49 and $46. you've got some major dedication going for a collection of complete snes games since boxed snes games are getting very hard to find.Quote:

You also need to worry about normal batteries on arcade boards. There's plenty of threads where after so many years the battery on the pcb would leak the battery acide and eat through the traces. There was a thread on arcadeotaku showing dodonpachi dai-ou-jou boards with batteries that had burst and eaten the board to the point where it no longer functioned. ddp-doj pcbs are like 400-500$ each so...uhm....yeah....arcade hardware can be a little tricky. Also I STRONGLY recommend the phoenixed cps2 boards, they run 100% like the non phoenixed board and come with cool extra options like the juke box mode.
I started doing that too with certain games as long as story isn't an issue. I got Rockman World 5 (Game Boy Mega Man V) for around $8 with shipping. I can understand people wanting the localized versions though.Quote:
