This could not happen anywhere. I live in a smaller state where most people dont have guns and I doubt this would have happened. There are just certain places where gun culture is more widely accepted like Colorado.

In theory, yes but realistically no. For example, there's really no gun culture in my city. Its not common for people to have shotguns and assault rifles in their bedrooms and closets unless they are drug dealers. If you look at all the mass shootings in the US that happen you really wont see many New Enlgand states where it happened. Colorado is like the wide open west where lots of families and people probably own and have easy access to weapons. New England is like the most safest and tranquil part of the US and yes this could happen of course but its not likely.Quote:

Oh there's drugs. Drugs are everywhere. In this country you have to actually commit a crime to get institutionalized, and even then it is hard to keep you there. Then there is the general madness of the consumer society and the basic human conflict between agrarian and tribal societies that has been the basis of all human history at play. Bottom line, this kind of thing cannot be eliminated, only mitigated.

No, I would disagree. I've sold plenty to people who live in NYC proper and I have to go through extra hoops to make sure they are compliant with local laws. People all over the country buy guns, I certainly wouldn't consider myself a gun nut, but I've been in the business for 4 going on 5 years now and I can tell you that people own plenty of them everywhere, when I sold handguns I sold the majority of them to people who lived in the City of Los Angeles...which is a fairly liberal place, to people from all walks of life.
I might also add, now that I've had so much exposure to the European side of the industry that despite all of our talk about European gun control, in many ways its easier to get guns in most of Western Europe and for the most part Europeans own as many if not in some cases more firearms per capita than we do.

I'm in the gun business, I'm for reasonable rational gun control, I own and shoot guns in competition and I own a handgun for self defense. Why somebody needs a 100 round drum for an AR15 is an entirely different argument, people in my opinion will never need and shouldn't have 30 or 100 round magazines for their firearms nor do they need AR15s and other military style semi-automatic and fully automatic rifles (which in many states you can still own Machineguns...WHY?). People have a need for handguns and long guns, for hunting, recreation and self defense. Owning offensive weapons makes little, if any sense and I've never understood the gun lobby's (which I suppose by default I'm apart of) argument that people need these things for defense, its idiotic.
Self-defense is legitimate as far as I'm concerned.
All that aside, however, I think the far more dangerous talk is that of psychology, this whole argument that we need to brand people as crazy when they start acting weird. That's TRULY dangerous to all of us and thinking we can find out for sure that somebody is "insane" or "different" is really scary and nobody seems to be fighting that.

Curiously though, I never see the very same people calling for a ban or greater control on liquor or certain automobiles when people die from drinking and driving. I wonder how many people died yesterday or even this year from drunk drivers. Liberals are terrified of firearms and if you notice, those are generally the people who want to take away the second amendment right of bearing arms. These are some of the very same people who coined the term "assault weapon" in order to scare the weak-minded fools. What irritated me most about this "news coverage" is how completely mindless it was. This attack was bad enough as it was, and yet here they were trying to make it bigger than necessary. To involve movie-goers (many of whom had no idea the attack had taken place) from all over the country as if their thoughts on the attack were any less arbitrary than those from people coming out of the grocery store and to imply that people should be nervous about seeing the movie was ridiculous to the point of being genuinely insulting. It's almost like they were hoping to make it the next 9-11 or something.
Christ. Just when I was finally trusting the media again... :shame:
