Building a respectable Saturn collection

Bah, the plot's decent enough that I'd rather listen to it in English... and the game does have story bits in between every race.

Yeah, I don't like recommendations because there are always way too many I could make. Just listing lots of games and saying "which kinds of games do you like, look at those" seems to better approach...

In this day I find it pretty silly for a seasoned adult gamer to be asking for general Saturn recomendations.
The topic has been covered extensively. Plenty of videos and reviews are available to provide exposure and awareness of games.

Just to ask "what games should I get" is a bit vague and lazy.

Hell, go to GameFAQs or MobyGames and you can browse the library by genre and other breakdowns. Then look up reviews and gameplay videos for whatever piques your interest. If you're still not sure about a particular game, or if it's obscure and these things aren't available, then make a thread asking if Game X is any good. Or at least ask a more specific question, like, "What are the system's best shooters?"

I don't mean to rag on the OP too much, but I feel like there's a new "recommend me Saturn games" thread every month.

There is, though it's hard to really make a big thread out of all of them. Last time someone tried that and it became an un-navigatable mess. Maybe I'll start a thread, sticky it and have users post their recommendations so that anyone else who asks this question can refer to the thread.

Which don't you like so far and which of your essentials have you already?
Better questions: what are you looking to get out of it (`90s vibe, 2D showcase, arcade style, 32 bit gen comparisons, Sega crack fix, etc)? And would you care to show us the sort of PS or N64 games you want to match or better with your Saturn? I've seen enough of your posts to have a pretty good feel pointing you in a direction for 16 bit games but outside of shooters the Saturn is too far removed from the MD.

Nonetheless here are some starters:
Read A Black Falcon's Saturn thread--just the OP. Since he has a similar collecting orientation.
Import at your leisure, not importing straightway will give you a nice cushion to enjoy the US stuff and perhaps stave off the purchasing frenzy that seems to overcome Saturn owners as soon as they glimpse its Japanese stock.
Do get the X-Men game. Also Iron Man XO/Man of War, a fairly 16 bit style platformer (ABF covered this in his reviews).
Sega Ages = Outrun, Afterburner II, and Space Harrier.
You don't need both Panzer Dragoons out of the gate.
Virtua Fighter 2 is the only VF worth having.
Virtual On has a very different fighting style from everything else on the system.

Yeah I guess I should have included more details. I'm rally not a fan of early 3D titles because they mess with my eyes too much, so stuff like NiGHTS and Virtua Fighter aren't really my thing. I do love the 2D titles like Astal and Skeleton Warriors. 90's vibe is always relevant.

As for the all comments about being lazy. Well, maybe a little, but it's also hard for me to search out decent Saturn games by genre because I'm not really into any particular genre. Plus I'd rather ask people specific questions about the games instead of just reading (often poorly written) reviews. It's nice to have the interactive approach.

Bomberman and Sega Ages collection

What's the deal with Bomberman? I keep reading how awesome it is because of the epic multiplayer capabilities, but is there anything else really cool about it other than the 10 player capability? That seems to be the main draw, is it just a standard Bomberman game otherwise. It's hard enough finding 1 person to play games with, I don't think I could pull off 9 lol.

Same here, I've heard nothing to suggest that there's any reason to really want it unless you have a lot of friends; otherwise it sounds like very standard Bomberman.

I'd add Three Dirty Dwarves to your list. It was one of my favorite Saturn games. Also, Bug! is another of my favorites, but opinions on this one seem to vary quite a bit. You can't go wrong with Three Dirty Dwarves.

I guess I'm weird, but I like "standard Bomberman" in single-player. However, I haven't extensively played all of the old Bomberman games (in particular, I have barely touched any of the Super Bomberman series), so I can't really say where Saturn Bomberman fits in the grand scheme of the series. When I first played (and owned) Saturn Bomberman, my main points of comparison were two Bomberman games for the Turbo, plain Bomberman as included on the Gate of Thunder disc, and Bomberman '93. In those games, your objective is to clear each level of all enemies; in Saturn Bomberman, your objective is to blow up certain targets. Saturn Bomberman also has different powerups, and little dinosaurs you can ride that give you different abilities. Saturn Bomberman was one of the last "classic" single-player Bomberman games. Newer ones have a Zelda-ish quest mode instead, and Bomberman Online was more like multiplayer with AI opponents.

That would be 9 people each with his own Saturn controller. You might have to put out flyers.

Mr Bones is a trippy 2D ACM game. I suppose the genre would be Novelty. You pretty much do something different in every lv across 2 disks. Eg the first has him fleeing pursuants across iirc the outskirts of a graveyard, the second has him atop a sepulchre trying to avoid series of wavelike clutches (as every contact of course knocks a bone off him, which he can recover, till he's just a hopping skull). It's quirky enough to be a try before you buy situation, some might find it irritating.
For nonaction I'd go with Holy Ark and Enemy Zero over most of the others--especially no to MKR.

Well yes it's a regular bomberman game but it's really really awesome. The music is fantastic, the stages have a lot of variety, the bosses are totally awesome, the battle stages have a ton of variety etc... If you love bomberman it's exciting I guess but if you're not into it you might not get as excited. And yeah the 10 player battle stage is totally awesome if you have a lot of people over.

Saturn Bomberman not only is the best multiplayer Bomberman, it also is the best single player Bomberman. Actually it's basically three entirely different single player Bomberman games on 1 disc, seeing as the Battle Mode can be played with one or two players and optional CPU allies or opponents enabled and that it includes two single player modes (one of which can be played co-op with a friend).

^ KFS2 is an import for US/C gamers.
