Ah, I'll always remember those great debates about how wonderful Sony was for developers. In the late PS1 early PS2 era it was well established fact that Sony buying up developers, and treatment of developers in general, was better than any other company's efforts. That is the way the gaming media presented Sony's entrance into the gaming industry in light of the successful launch of its second console.
I say Psygnosis was better as a game developer before the 32-bit consoles hit the market.
Oh goddammit! Another formerly great classic game studio that's gone the way of the Dodo...
I'll always love the Wipeout series and the stuff Psygnosis did. Wipeout XL (2097) took so many hours of my life back when I was in high school.
Psygnosis died years ago; Sony Liverpool was just the ghost of what they used to be.
They did make some great games in the past, it's a shame they are being closed down. Hopefully their IP doesn't just languish in limbo forever. It would be nice to see some of it picked up by studios that can really do something nice with it.
My lasting memory of Psygnosis will always be Shadow of the Beast - that game was so weird and unlike anything I'd seen before, especially back when I was a little kid and I didn't know anything about its influences (nowadays it can pretty much be called "Roger Dean's Prog Rock Record Covers: The Game") - even though I first experienced it on a Spectrum, I recall loading a rolling demo of the game off a Your Sinclair covertape and just being flummoxed by it (if I'd seen the Amiga version first, my eyes might have popped out) - I absolutely wanted it then and there, and begged my parents for the game as soon as it came out. Not many people seem to have many kind words for the game these days, perhaps due to the rather poor console adaptations (the bugged Genesis one that's virtually impossible springs to mind) and it being a tough game in general that gives you barely any clues about what you have to do, but back then it was mindblowing.
I never actually liked them too much, but their logo was memorable, although I do admit to enjoying Wiz n' Liz on MD.
In memorial, please watch their CES 1993 show with FM Towns games:
I will go home and play Shadow of the Beast today.
I can't believe they're dead. Does this mean no more wipeout?
One of the best game over themes ever.
Because SotB2 is brutal?
Still, that definitely is one great game over screen.
