Snatcher - Does it live up to the hype?

Recently played through Snatcher after being able to get a copy, and I must say that I was a little disappointed with the game after all of the hype due to the fact that it was only like 6 hours long and then after I got so enthralled with the game up until the very end The ending of the game is just slapped on and kind of blah. I mean, so basically the Snatchers were developed by Gillian and Jamie and Elijah Modner? And Gillian just goes to Siberia and eliminates all of the Snatchers like that? How...uneventful!

Does anyone else feel the same way about Snatcher that I do?

I hate Snatcher. I beat it in a weekend rental back in the day and never wanted to pick it up. Now that Kojima is supposed to be some wonderful developer I hate Snatcher just as much. Play Rise of the Dragon instead.

I deeply enjoyed the first two acts managing to sink I'd wager more time into them than six hours ferreting out every bit of text, however act 3 is cat vomit.

Snatcher definitely lived up to the hype for me but I played it in 1994. That was obviously before the internet status it received later. It got great reviews from Gamefan but I was wary of that given their tendency to overrate games and their Japanophilia which didn't make them the best judge of the adventure genre.

I beat the game the day I rented it. I went to buy it months later but it had already disappeared off store shelves. I didn't replay it until the early or mid 2000s on emulator but I remember thinking it had aged well. It's a neat interactive Blade Runner and is mostly devoid of all the awful writing and characters that plague the Metal Gear series.

I think it's the perfect length. When Policenauts finally was translated, I kept thinking, "this is really cool but it's dragging on way too long".

I'm with Baloo and Sheath.
I bought the game at release because of Gamefan magazine's perfect 100% scores. The game was so contrary to everything Gamefan used to preach about. Snatcher was not a new level of videogaming, it was an interactive comic. A cliched and predicatable one at that.

I've spoken out against the Snatcher hype on more than a few occasions over the past 18 years. Particularly after Metal Gear Solid nobody would entertain a discenting opinion.

Glad to see people are starting to view Snatcher for what it is - a pretty basic digital comic.

I love it. My only complaint is that it could have been longer. I always liked the ending and I think it is one of the longest endings I have ever seen. Though with all the hype it gets I get the feel feeling some people are upset that it doesn't float and levitate.

Or maybe just simply the fact that there isn't much of a "game" present.

And that's it in a nut shell . At the time 10 hours of gameplay was more than good enough and Snatcher took console adventure games to a new level in terms of presentation and showed what the CD formate could do and really improved over the 88 version. It was an amazing adventure game, which has hardly been bettered imo (just like Rise of the Dragon) .

Its not the game fault its seen as an darling of E-bay and built up this rep over the years - helped by its limited production run for English lan versions . I paid £30 for my copy and at the time it was right up there with anything on any other system imo

I think the game is awesome and easily lives up to the hype; I loved it back in the day and still do. Ending slapped on? Really? Personally I think the cold war aspects of the ending are a lot more creative than what we would have got from a lot of developers. As is, I'd take the ending that we recieved over a stereotypical cackling megalomaniac villain, time travellers, or space aliens, which would have been quite likely endings from less creative designers. Besides, name one other game of that era that has an ending which is 20 minutes plus of pure dialogue.

Yeah, I tried it when I got my PS2 in 2001, it felt just as contrived and average to me as everything else I played that year. Maybe a little bit better, but far from what the cult following would claim. Then again, I was looking for solid action gameplay with good pacing and didn't really find it.

It's a pretty darn fun "anime style" mech game. It's overrated for sure but certainly not "average". Contrived well... it's Kojima.

If someone is going to drop the cash to play Snatcher wouldn't they already know this going in? If a person hates a certain genre why buy or even emulate that type of game? This where I think it gets an unfair amount of flak.

I didn't think Snatcher was too bad, the third act is beyond silly, though.
