Perpetual Movie Thread/What was the last movie you watched?

I watched Green Room, I passed this movie a few times on the site I get my movie fix based on the cover but last night I took the plunge and must say it was not bad... the movie has a very interesting cast like Patrick Stewart, Eric Edelstein and the late Anton Yelchin I also liked Macon Blair (Gabe). The movie started off slow but picked up about midway, it was pretty realistic from the blood to the performances of the actors also some great music, I particularly liked Sinister Purpose by CCR during the end credits. The story is a whatever, it's the events that take place from the mid point to the end are what makes the movie.

THat new Jungle Book.

Saw the new Trek movie.
It was ok. My biggest complaint from the previous two, and one that the trailers for this one looked to confirm was, unsurprisingly, the case.

This is an action movie, hands down. No real philosophy, no "mans place in the greater universe"... no real mysteries/unknown to explore.

It started to get into a very little bit of that, which I do give it credit for... but unfortunately it threw it away in favor of setting up the next big action/FX sequence.

The plot of the movie also walked itself WAY back with a needless, and inane, late movie twist that removed all semblance of having any sort of message whatsoever.

The start of the movie set up an obvious overtone of the Federation being essentially imperialism via peace. The main villains little tagline of "you have pushed the frontier for hundreds of years, today it pushes back" made for a very interesting motive and plot. It could have explored that concept... but instead the big bad guy winds up being a former human soldier and starfleet captain that pulled a Rambo. He never fully left being at war. And he resented the federation for what he saw was abandoning him... so he extended his life with conveniently abandoned alien technology he found on the world he was stranded on. But they never really explored any of that aspect either... it was simply slapped in your face as a twist at the climax of the movie. They also never really explained the mcguffin they were after, or anything about him and how he came to be what he was in any real way. It just came so close to being a worthy Trek movie instead of a decent space action movie... but sadly it just fell on itself because it was more concerned with moving you to the next action sequence.

Can anyone ascertain why the Enterprise seems very weak (like wet toilet paper) in the rebooted series? In the original movie world, it took a pounding and never quit except that one time Scottie didn't expect Kirk to take them into combat.

I'm thinking to be more based in reality. Star Trek has always been what if in terms of reality than highly imaginative and fanciful.

Not really. I think it's a cheap way to "up the stakes" they are using too often. The enterprise has basically been completely out matched in every single one of the new movies. Like, to the point where it might as well be a giant space taxi and nothing else.

I can assure you that "being more realistic" was probably never mentioned in any of the reasons for that.

It's simplistic and lets them have more explosion porn. These are absolutely bone standard action flicks wrapped in the skin of Star Trek. They aren't as bad as a Michael Bay movie, but they are certainly not engaging or thoughtful movies. Shame since the cast is pretty spot on and have great chemistry.

I've been on a binge watch of classic sci fi shows, and after watched quite a few episodes of The Next Generation & DS9, I see these new 'Trek Reboots in a new light. They're shit.

I watched the first and second a few years back and found them pass-able, but now, I find them an insult to what the series used to stand for. So thus, I won't be seeing this new one.

I hate how they've taken the "realism" out of Star Trek, it's like.. before you saw a character and said character was actually alive in the show.
Now they're shallow empty vessels, acted out by cgi smoothed lens flared butt enhanced actors/actresses playing yet another disposable character.

I know what Chakotay looks like, I know what Spock looks like, I know what 7of9's ass looks like. But don't ask me to describe current Kirk or Uhura or Khan.

Quite boring until the end,low budget horror with some adequate acting which is surprising.If you liked exorcist or the omen check it out.

I've been on a foreign film kick. I just watched the Russian film Brother (1997). Inspirational film from post-Soviet Russia about the despair felt by everybody there at the time from the encroaching American influence due to overwhelming and disproportional economic success.

I also watched Mel Gibson's Forever Young. Good flick. I don't care what people say, Mel Gibson is an excellent actor whose roles anyone can relate to.

Jackal, what's a good classic sci-fi film to watch? I watched Wrath of Khan, and it was great. I also really liked Forbidden Planet.

I loved it!

The Last Man on Earth, starring Vincent Price. It's an old movie but it's based upon an interesting book called I am Legend. Price is a great actor, I suppose, but he just wasn't right for the part. Probably my favorite part of the book was when Neville loses it and grabs his guns. Price was too old to be as physical as the character from the book. Also, while the beginning of the movie is somewhat faithful to the book, they failed to convey why Neville was a legend. The ending of the movie is a failure, too, unfortunately.

Seen Dr Strange last night. Don't care about all these comic/superhero movies but this one looked a little different. It was meh.

The action/fight scenes were poorly filmed. You can hardly tell what was going on. All up close and covered in sfx. They really should have hired a capable choreographer.

Scott Adkins was completely wasted and did almost nothing. I wish Hollywood would pay attention and give this man better roles. Dude who plays Strange looks exactly like a young Dennis Quaid. Not very likeable.

The final villain-thing looked like a damn videogame. Like the final form of a last boss or something. I don't get all the hype surrounding this movie. It's pretty mediocre. Nothing special. Another comic book movie.

Aah yes! Just like the "good old days" of watching Mel play a bad ass. This movie is a great example of just that. The kind of hero I tend to root for.

He is definitely not too old for this s--t.
