I saw when it came out, and while it was not a fun and cheery movie, it wasn't like say... BvS or MoS, where it was completely devoid of any semblance of levity whatsoever.
It was a bittersweet story absolutely... and not meant to be a fun romp through a crazy world filled with people who have amazing powers.
I very much enjoyed the movie myself and will gladly watch it again.
Wasn't perfect, not by any stretch. The 92/93% on RT is, IMO, a bit high. It's a high 80's movie to me. Like 88/100 would be the score I'd give it.
It needed to have the story without x24 IMO, he added nothing to the movie other than some cool fights. Sabertooth would have been a much better choice to accomplish the same kind of fights with a character who can act as an evil Wolverine stand in. The personal history (and ability to have actual dialog) would have made for a stronger addition to the antagonists in the movie.
I'm not really into comic book movies. They all just feel very vanilla now these days.
Just watched Life (2017).
Loved it!
I've been yearning for a good Sci Fi film. I haven't enjoyed a SciFi movie like this since Pandorum.
Bump!
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
:D
I can't believe I waited this long to give this one an honest watch. I remember watching pieces of it many times over in the past; always dismissing it as something I wouldn't enjoy from the Coen brothers. Little did I know this one would be the only light-hearted comedy they've ever made. I really enjoyed it. A nice change of pace from the stoic, arid tones of the rest (which I absolutely love, too; but a nice change of pace, nonetheless).
Mine's not too keen on big hairy apes I suppose. I'll start calling her Charlton.
Nice. My brother's friend from school wrote and directed The Chamber, just out on disc. I believe it's quite good...
Also, dying to see Life, and Arrival. Next week, after night shifts...
Just watched Frailty again for the first time since it was released fifteen years ago. A bloody good thriller that showed not only what a good actor Bill Paxton was, but what a good director he was too. RIP Private Hudson. "It's game over man, it's game over!"
'Forgot to mention I watched: The Accountant (with Ben Affleck).
What an awesome treat. I love a good idea. It kind of creates its own universe. Think Jack Reacher (the first movie) meets Mercury Rising.
I don't know. In a world with an oversaturation of Chris Hardwick and all this nerd culture embracing, it might seem like the hipster thing to not like comic book movies.
This past week, the first two Godfather films on TV (I don't even remember the last time those were on), and I saw the remake of CHiPs in the theater.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
I enjoyed it a lot. Way more than the craptastic fest that was the Total Recall reboot. But, I must agree with some reviewers, although I enjoyed the aesthetics, much of it was derived from what a 1980s/early 90s mindset would've pictured the future to look like. And these "enhancements", though cool looking at first glance, and downright nostalgic, seemed highly impractical from a medical/surgical standpoint. Cyborgs used to be one of my favorite SciFi themes, but nowadays they are creeping me out a bit. Although this movie didn't exactly creep me out as much as the Robocop reboot.
Power Rangers (2017)
It was a good film. The kids did a good job acting. I can see why the producers made a lot of the choices. Small town in the middle of nowhere to represent a sense of urgency from noob rangers rather than call upon the armed forces around the corner. Not specifying zord species monikers that were not dinosaurs (some not even alive 65 million years ago); although they could've done away with the explanation altogether, or at least not include said non-dinosaur species. The list goes on...
Only real beef I have is three-fold:
1. Lack of real martial arts.
2. Lack of Power Rangers theme song (no, those 10 seconds it played for do not count)
3. Rita Repulsa's character (cheesily-enacted and even more cheesely-written)
I can live with the last one, but the first two kept me yearning for that certain allure that the series is know for.
Still, I can say the film kept me interested to the end; which is saying a lot. And it's worth mentioning that teens coming out of the theater were giving praises like: "that was actually a good film". That's a lot more praises than I saw kids giving movie reboots like Ghostbusters or Robocop. Although I wonder how much of that stemmed from the whole Zack Snyder meets Michael Bay overall feel. A sequel would also bring me back (maybe not in the theater, but I'd watch that for sure; unlike several Michael Bay sequels I just don't have the energy to try out anymore).
Alice Sweet Alice
The antagonist was revealed much too early AFAIC. Way to drop the ball.
I tried to watch Jack Reacher but kept falling asleep. I don't think I was all that tired, just bored by it. After an hour, I decided to switch off. Then on broadcast, they were playing Escape from New York. I watched the whole thing, wide awake, too. I've seen it before years ago but it's an amazing film. How is it not more popular? My favorite movie of all time is still The Fifth Element but wow, Escape from New York could be a close second. So good!
^ yeah, I was just thinking this morning as I was waking up how they don't make movies like they used to.
Otherwise I enjoyed jack reacher, but hated it's sequel. Though of couse escape from new York is a way better movie.
Just watched 10 Cloverfield Lane. 100% loved it. Right up my street.
