For one thing it was a stupid, stupid reboot that I don’t think anyone wanted.

Two, it just kind of proved that SONY was the problem, not so much the filmmakers.

Three, that second one was just a miserable experience. Plus I hated the surprise reveal at the end of the movie that Oscorp was just essentially a super villain factory.

Such a waste of such good actors, too. Paul Giamatti deserves better.

Fun fact: many many many years ago, I read an early script of the first Spider-Man movie, and they were originally going to cram the Green Goblin and Dr Octopus into the same movie, just like the Batman films we’re doing at the time. I’m glad they waited a few movies before attempting that shit.

Know something? I never watched the rebooted 'Amazing' Spider-Man films out of principle. I heard that the only thing amazing about them was how amazingly shit they were, so it looks like I made the right choice. I was a big fan of Raimi's Spider-Man films, and thought that it was fucking ludicrous that Sony were trying to 'reboot' the franchise so soon after Spider-Man 3, and when there was absolutely fucking zero need to do so. So Spider-Man 3 disappointed with it's portrayal of Venom. So? So fucking what? The Sandman was an excellent villain and Spider-Man 1 & 2 were great films so...why fucking reboot?! There was absolutely no need! Just move on to Spider-Man 4 and carry on! I resented the fact that it was being rebooted so I voted with my feet and have stayed the hell away from Spider-Man films ever since. I even refused to watch Spider-Man Homecoming, or whatever the fuck it's called, out of the same principle. I don't give a shit if it's trying to tie in with the whole Marvel universe. With the exception of Spider-Man and the X-Men I don't fucking like the Marvel universe, so why would I care that it's trying to tie Spidey in with it?! If I want to watch Spidey I'll stick with Raimi's trilogy and the excellent 90's cartoon series, and then I'll play Spider-Man on my Mega Drive and Mega CD. Everything film studios cynically fart out now with 'Spider-Man' slapped on it can die a slow fucking death for all I care. Rant over.

Some people would consider this sacrilege, but I really enjoyed Homecoming. They did some weird stuff in the name of cultural sensitivity & diversity (example: Flash Thompson is now an Indian student in Peter's debate class), but the elements they got right, they really got right. Tom Holland is a far better Peter Parker than Tobey Maguire & Andrew Garfield, and his American accent is impeccable.

This weekend I saw Bad Times at the El Royale.

Awesome.

Homecoming is good. It's the only flaw is if someone doesn't like Marvels movie formula then they would not like the film. It's not looking to reach the emotional depth of Spiderman 2. Amazing films tried to but fell so had on their face.

Spiderman 1-2 will always be my fave Superhero films but I can enjoy the MCU Spidey universe but I mist say I sure do miss this!

^ I'm also wondering. Heard it wasn't great, but the more opinions the better.

I watched The Birds II: Land's End. It was a bad movie. I think it would have been better if it had focused on the family issues at hand and left the birds out of it.

Mrs. Armitage and I saw Halloween 2018 on Tuesday. IMHO it is highly overrated*. A lot of plot holes and people acting really stupidly - nowhere near as smooth a movie as the original was.

I think people are giving it a large boost out of nostalgia.

What plot holes? I watched it a few nights back and enjoyed the film. Felt like they put a lot of love into it.

My only complaint was the cinema I was in had idiots talking in the background who wouldn't shut the fuck up.

To be fair Jake, it was never going to match the original Halloween. That film is rightly hailed as an all time classic. I'm going to see this new Halloween sometime in the next few days and I'm really excited for it. Especially since RLM gave it a thumbs up on Half in the Bag. Considering their low opinion of modern horror films (rightly so) the fact that they're recommending the new Halloween film is quite an endorsement.

Heh - here are a couple off the top of my head:

Let's fortify a house with some nifty gadgets to block some doorways and the basement. And lots of lights on the outside.
But we won't fortify the perimeter of the house at all. The door is not a steel core door and has windows that can be easily broken and the large bar easily removable through the broken windows. The mother leaves the basement when she realizes the daughter is out and about. She knows there is a killer lurking about but does she take her gun (or any of the others available) to possibly protect herself or said daughter? No......

The police turn over their evidence (maybe copies of documents - but also some of the actual physical evidence) to a documentary crew - not likely.

Surprise surprise. Let's have a lunatic posing as a mental health professional aid and abet the criminal - which has the advantage of explaining how the bus got wrecked but the premise is not terribly believable.

Let's go hide in a not very well fortified house instead of going to a bonafide fortified police station - or better yet taking a car and taking a long overdue vacation in Hawaii or Alaska. Yeah - part of the gimmick was the basement being a trap - but only if all of the pieces fell into place - not his style but Michael could just have easily had a barbecue by torching the place while the hapless trio was in the basement.

I didn't expect it to be a reboot of the original* - but it just wasn't a smooth enough movie to be a terribly enjoyable experience. Slightly better than most of the other sequels** but that is not saying much. Much of the suspense of the original relied on the victims not acting stupidly (in light of the fact that they generally did not know what was happening) but just being caught in a bad situation. This one relied all too often on the victims acting stupidly given that they knew the nature of the problem.

A large part of the reason I found it so disappointing was the glowing reviews.

*The only time that ever really worked was for John Carpenter's "The Thing" - and that was more because he went back to the novella both were based on and was more faithful to it. (The novella was by John Campbell and was entitled "Who Goes There?")

**Not nearly as good as III IMHO but that was not a sequel in anything other than name.

I'm a big fan of Halloween III as well. It was an attempt by Carpenter to start an anthology of annual horror films that would only have the fact that they are set at Halloween in common with each other. That is why he quite clearly killed off Michael Myers at the end of Halloween II in the hospital explosion, in which there was no way that Myers or Dr. Loomis could have survived. Sadly Carpenter's idea never materialised due to the fact that Halloween III didn't do well at the box office because Michael Myers wasn't in it. That must have infuriated Carpenter who must have been thinking "No, he's not in it, because he was fucking blown up and burnt to a cinder at the end of the last film! Pay attention!"
