I just saw Youth in Revolt. Honestly it wasn't a great film, but it really spoke to me and I enjoyed it. Basically it was my whole life verbatim. Terrifying stuff.

But it took me three tries to find someone to go with me. Two other girls bailed during the week (wtf? terrible numbers lately), but I managed to go with a chick I really like. It was kind of nice, we had to go to a sort of out of the way theatre because none of the big ones were showing it so it was a big audience and 35mm screen. The audience reactions were great and it was a blast.

I ought to post more in this thread as the big cineast I am. Anyway; I saw 'The Wild Bunch' yesterday, which truly is a great flick.

I got a PS3 at Christmas, and thanks to awesome sales I've amassed a collection of 23 Blurays, but I haven't had time to watch them! At many peoples' request I watched American Psycho. Holy crap, that movie was EXCELLENT. Christian Bale was amazing in the movie. How was this movie made 10 years ago and I had never seen it?

I don't even know how I managed to see this movie even then, since even now it's fairly obscure. For the longest time I only know Christian Bale as "that weird guy from that one movie."

The next time I saw him, he was Batman.

I saw Justice League: The New Frontier, and I got a box of some old, public domain horror flicks. Night of the Living Dead, House on Haunted Hill, Gamera...good creaky old stuff.

I remembered him as the kid in Empire of the Sun when I saw American Psycho back then.

Later I saw Equilibrium & The Machinist; solidified his credibility as a good actor for me. The difference between his Machinist roll, which he was emaciated beyond recognition & then Batman, was amazing. IIRC he had potential for going into shock at the weight difference & had to be supervised when in the Bat suit.

Now he's getting typecast into the bullshit action hero, even though good rolls still fill out his resume.

So, I wrote up a retrospective for '09, and forgot to post it here. Better late than never:

2009 Films In Retrospect

The following is me commenting on every film I saw in 2009 (In theaters) For some it'll be a paragraph, others a couple sentences, one or two just a few words. For this list I have seen 30 films, which is a personal record, and doesn't include Cedar Lee's Cult Films Series (although thanks to them I've seen Plan 9 From Outer Space twice in a theater this year, which is a sentence I thought I'd never be typing). Also included are films that had a 2008 release but I didn't see them until 2009. On we go!

Slumdog Millionaire: Not much can be said that hasn't been already. This film was great! We needed a well done film that had a happy ending, which these days doens't always come along. It just has a overall feel of satisfaction at the end, and that's before you get to the dance number which I'll admit was a little odd, but it just went with the film in it's own odd way. The soundtrack itself is becoming a gulity pleasure as I just recently really started listening to it.

Gran Torino: Again, it's all been said so I'll keep it breif. It's Dirty Harry 4. Clint Eastwood goes around being a badass and putting wiggers in their place. Everyone else is like a Lifetime movie that no one watched, but Clint saves it from being boring. It's all about Clint pointing invisible guns at gang members, then going "Oh, wrong gun" then pulling out a real one. You watch it for him.

Watchmen: I went into this knowing it'd be a long comic book movie. I didn't go in expecting to have multiple emotions by the end, and did not expect the length. It'd acted great by everyone, and isn't afraid to show everything and tell the whole story, even if it gets needlessly violent at times (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CUT AROUND HIS ARMS! WHY?!) People expecting full on bad guy Vs. good guy aren't going to find it here. It's a lot of talking and thinking, with a couple action scenes in between, and that doens't really dissappoint me. The ending is up and downer and you can't decide how to feel. It's pretty overwhelming, but I don't really need to see it again.

Dragonball: Evolution: I liked it. I have the poster on my door. I don't care about it's horrible box office and low reviews. I went into this with the word "evolution" in my head. It's an evolution, as in to make it a bit more modern, and even a little "realistic" things were changed. No talking animals, no blue hair, no Master Roshi (they could have kept him like the real character), everyones a little older than when they were in the manga. I went in watching a film where I didn't know the characters, I wanted to let them have me learn about Goku, and make me care, and it works to an extent. The fight scenes are actually done well, with the final battle being a bit anti-climatic. It's not the best film, but for simple fun, and even to show younger audiences, there's nothing wrong with Dragonball.

X:Men Origins: Wolverine: People hated this movie, and I don't agree. It worked out just fine for me, although there was this guy in the film named Gambit. He was this kid with a northern accent who spun around with a baton and posed and smiled alot. He was an odd addition to this film. I don't know where he came from. Other than that, this was a solid action flick, and Deadpool was awesome, I don't care how he pissed some off with his treatment. He's not going to be the full on Deadpool right away! That's the point of the movie! (btw, if you're attemping to be Gambit, and you walk by and see a man with a bullet in his head that you were friends with, you're going to let out a "mon dieu!". Give us something! Damn!)

Sunshine Cleaning: Funny at times, but tries a bit much to be sentimental at times, or even to make a memorable scene. It had a original idea, and the story around it worked, but near the end it gets to be coincidental and predictable, and it throws you off. The actings fine, along with most of the other elements, but it falls a bit flat.

I Love You, Man: This was another solid movie, and damn funny at times. There's not a whole lot I can say about it though. It's well written, and doesn't rely on cliches. The ending was done well, and doens't make you feel like you've seen in 1,000 times before. It's a worthy watch.

The Brothers Bloom: Probably my biggest dissappointment of the year. When the trailers came out for this, I was excited right away! It's Adrian Brody (Yea!) and Mark Ruffalo (A TERRIFIC ACTOR) pulling con jobs with Rachel Weiz. The first hour of the film works out awesome. The intro is entertaining and makes you really want to watch, and it goes up from there. Unfortunately, there's an exact point where you can see the film go downhill. When I wondering if a film has hit two hours yet, and it hasn't even hit 90 minutes, that's a bad sign. Some stupid decisions are made, things go unexplained that didn't need to be (there's a diffirence between "open to interpretation" and "I'm too damn lazy to make up an answer") And by the end I didn't really care for the characters as much as I should have. I REALLY wanted to love this film. It had all the right elements, but in the end I was sitting in the theater thinking it could have pulled off something more.

Up: I cried. I actually bawled my fucking eyes out in the first 20 minutes of Up. I was surprised as anyone else that sat around me. At the end of the film, I was comepletely turned around, and laughing a bit. From a Disney film! Near the end things got a bit silly for its own good and I actually was thinking "Wait, wasn't this like the saddest thing ever an hour ago?" and that's why I don't make this my favorite animated film of the year. It was a great movie that I'll watch again and again, but that third act for the most part brings it down a bit.

The Hangover: While this was funny as hell in places, it's more about the characters and timing then any memorable lines, and there's really nothing wrong with that. Everyone's seen it and loved it, including me, so there's really nothing new to add.

Public Enemies: I think it's the camera choice that threw some people off. Using the digital cameras gave it a more realistic feel, but in an odd way. It's not bad, and pretty damn entertaining, but I think plenty of people in the theater were there for one reason: Johhny Depp. Once his part of the film ends most people left the room, which had me dissappointed. The ending is one of the better ones I've seen done this year for any film, and really sold the fact that this was more than a summer action filck, and really a well done movie.

Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince: It's Degrassi with Harry Potter, and they throw the whole silly Voldemort thing aside so Ron can ask Harry if he and Ginny "did it yet?"
Yeah. It has its moments where it's actually pretty awesome, but the story itself was pretty dissappointing. It's most about the visuals, and for Harry/Hermoine shippers. Then there's Slughorn. Fucking Slughorn. The book makes constant reference to Slughorn pretty much looking like Theodore Roosevely and Wilford Brimley. There's a damn picture of him IN THE BOOK. So, when Harry and Dumbledore go into this house in the begining, and Harry sits on a chair, I know what's coming. And....AND.......WHO THE FUCK IS THAT?! That's not fucking Slughorn!!!!!!!!! It's not like a character with his specifications and voice would be that hard to do after ,you know, FUCKING HAGRID and damn near any other character that they've done to a fucking T! With all the dissappointment, I'm still doing Deathly Hallows at midnight.

Moon: I really wish this got a wider release. Sam Rockwell is the only one around in this film, and carries the hell out of it. I wont go into too much plotwise, but Sam plays an astronaut about to finish his three-year contract. It's so damn well done and especially for a rookie director! If you ever get a chance, check this out, seriously!

Angels and Demons: I think people were ready to hate this film as soon as it was announced, and it's a bit of a shame. It really was a solid film, and while it has its parts that make you facepalm, it's got and ending that makes up for it if not a little predictable. Give it a second chance if you can catch it for free.

Star Trek: I waited for the cheap theater before I caught this, and I regretted it. This was a damn good movie, and really made me care about Star Trek for the first time ever. Seriously. That's the golden thing. You don't have to give two shits about anything involving Star Trek, and this is a great film. If you do know the shows and the movies, then there's plenty of inside jokes that will make it even greater, but nothing distracting.

InGlorius Basterds: This was the first "Best of the year" films, award-wise. You go in expecting standard Tarantino, but leave going "that was the best damn thing he's ever done". It's THAT great. It's not such much a pure action film as it is a foreign thriller, even though it's American made. Plenty of talking, in German, but you still know it's Quentin's words, and that helps to make this such a damn awesome movie! And Christoph Waltz. Mother Fuckin' Christoph Waltz.

9: We saw 9. On September 9th, 2009, in theater 9, with two ticket stubs to Plan 9 From Outer Space in my wallet. That's the most fun I can say I had with this movie. Some of the animation was damn impressive, the stories and characters overall don't help it's cause. Basically, check out a video on Youtube where they take all the action sequences and put them to some random Linkin Park song (not that it matters which one, you can put the volume down anyway) and you'll have the same amount of satisfaction that sitting in the theater gave most others.

Zombieland: Yea! An awesome violent comedy for Halloween! This is one of those movies that will get multiple views throughout the years, and it really deserves it! If anything, I wish there were more creative zomibie deaths near the end. At some point it goes from creative killings to shooting, shooting, more shooting, kicking off a high place, shooting, MALLET TO THE HEAD, shooting, shooting, car door. But that barely matters. I can't wait for the sequel.

A Serious Man: This is near my favorite of the year! From the start of the film (which has a pleasant surprise casting choice) to the end, it's one hell of a ride, but you don't realize it till the end. Again, I wont give too much away, but the films puts you in a position right away to make a choice at how you will view the film, and both choices make you see a diffirent movie. I love this damn movie and you can't stop thinking about it after it's over.

An Education: As much praise as this is getting, I guess I don't see it. It's a solid film though. Alfred Molina is the shining star to me, and I had never heard of Carey Mulligan until this but I now I'll be watch for her as she was great in a subtle and natural performance. It's great acting all around for me, but the film itself feels a bit lacking, and the ending feels tacked on (but maybe it needed to be, I haven't decided).

Fantastic Mr. Fox: Now that I've seen all I'm going to see this year, I can safely say that this is pretty much my personal favorite of the year! Better than Up. This needs to win Best Animated Feature, but I know it wont. I'm huge into Wes Anderson, which was the main reason I wanted to see this, but after viewing, I think this is his most accessable film, and his best overall. I almost want his next film to be stop-motion instead of live-action. I loved it that damn much! The music is great, and epic at one particular moment that makes the whole damn film! DAMMIT I LOVED THIS MOVIE!

Precious: This movie tries so hard to be the most dramatic and raw film of the year, and for some parts, it does just that. When it fails, it's some of the most hilarious stuff I've seen in a theater this year. I think I laughed more at this than Hangover (well, almost more) but it was a solid film, and you can see that everyone is trying, but I was entertained regardless of if it worked or not. I don't need to watch it ever again, but one day I'm going to teach my self basic video editing skills just so I can put the Benny Hill theme over certain parts.

Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day: While The Brothers Bloom had a great first hour then grinded to a second hour, Boondock Saints II was a polar opposite. For the first hour I was mortified. The film was just plain stupid. Willem Defoes replacement SUCKS! I'm not going to be nice, she sucked. The film takes way too long to pick up, but once it does it becomes a bad ass movie. By the end you almost forgive that first hour. If it was a full room with Boondock Saint fans, there would have been plenty of cheers at homages to the first one, but instead it was a near empty room. With some better editing (A particular scene I wont spoil should have started the film in my opinion) this could have been a damn near perfect sequel, but I can kind of see why this got almost no distrubution.

Ponyo: The most beautiful film I've seen all year. Using water colors makes this one piece of art. Each scene is another painting that you could stare at for hours. It is so damn pretty. The characters are well done, even with a story that doesn't take too much to absorb, but it's a kids movie so that's not really an issue. This movie has some of the most adorbable moments you'll see all year, the best film art you'll view all year, and the some of the best music you've heard for awhile. Again, it's too bad this had little advertising.

The Hurt Locker: I wish I had seen this sooner. Jeremy Renner is the biggest thing in acting to come out of 2009 with this movie. He is incredible, and really shows multiple sides to a character that others could have played with less dimension and still been solid. This is a real character, and it shows. The whole film centers around him, but he doens't carry it by himself, it has a great supporting cast (save,maybe, for one in particular which the films makes up for) and overall this whole movie was just really well made. One of the best of the year regardless of what any award show says.

Avatar: Everyone's seen it by now, but here's Avatar. The story has been done before, but it's told in such a great way, with the acting for the most part that you don't care unless you WANT to hate it. And this is before you even touch the effects, which are ashtonishing at times, and goofy looking at other times. When you're just in the world of the Na'vi, it's damn near perfect. When there's any sort of interaction between a human and the Na'vi, you can become distracted. I don't feel the film completely relies on the effects, but I will admit that with out them this movie wouldn't be doing as well as it already has. With that, it's still one of the best of the year.

Me and Orson Welles: This is the biggest shame of the year, distribution wise. Even more than Boondock Saints and Ponyo. This was a great film. Forget Zac Effron (who is above adequete in his role, and you don't see High School Musical in him) and see this as a timewarp to late 30's New York, where plays were still seen just as culturally important as films of the day. Everyone does there part well, and you get a great feeling of importance by the films ending. Oh, and FUCKING CHRISTIAN MCKAY IS DAMN PERFECT! Every time he's on the screen it's him. All about him, and the film is him! If it wasn't for Christain doing Orson spot-on, this film wouldn't have been nearly as satisfying. He is masterful, (and only been doing this whole film acting thing for a few years now) and I really wouldn't mind seeing him in March during the Oscars.

Sherlock Holmes: Awesome movie. Well done with creative fight scenes that show Sherlock thinks about EVERYTHING logically, and even brings upon some heroin addiction (if only implied). Everyone does there job well (Rachel McAddams is a little distracting but that doesn't matter much), and I REALLY REALLY REALLY can't wait for the sequel, which I hope is already getting started, because this is going to be a great franchise.

Nine: I'll admit, I didn't get into Nine as much as I thought I would. Some of the songs are catchy, and near everyone fits the role well, it still had a few issues that I can't really put my finger on that had me bored near halfway through. Daniel Day Lewis actually disappointed me a bit, which I hate to say because it's fucking Daniel Day Lewis, but he plays the role TOO perfectly, if that makes sense. His character Guido is suffering basically from writers block, and acts like he's getting dementia and starts acting serious about everything. His character is supposed to be a bit more charming and goofy while dealing with his writers block and the diffirent women in his life, but instead Daniel over plays it, which made it hard for me to get into it. It was solid quality film, but I can see it getting ignored in most places come award time.

Up In The Air: This is probably my second of the year, and I would have no issue with it winning it all the next couple months. On the surface, it's a real look into the recession and major job cuts. When you get more into the film, it becomes a real character study, and you watch as George Clooney starts to rethink his life, and helps a young Anna Kendrick with her life goals and how realistic they really are (She has her entire life planned out at 23). By the end, things change yet stay the same. The ending is a little bit left to iterpretation, but you still have a good idea where it would go from there. I loved it, and it's something that everyone should see.

Brothers: The trailers (Which I'm learning more that I shouldn't rely on as much as I have to determine film quality) for Brothers made it looking like everyone in the films screams at each other for one reason, and when you see it....you realize they're really screaming about something else, but I'm not saying that in a mocking way. Brothers exceeded my expectations everywhere. It's all about the acting. I'm not sure if I can completely expect it, but if Tobey Maguire gets a Best Actor nom out of this I wouldn't be bothered by it. Hell, give Jake Glyhenhall one too!

Well, that's it. 30 movies is damn insane for me (Check the photo for the findings in my wallet), and next year will probably be more! If your reading this, thank you for making it to the end with me!

There's already a Dirty Harry 4, it's called Sudden Impact. In fact, I guess you would have to call this Dirty Harry 6.

I was referring to how when this film had no title and was sitting in development that the main rumor was that it was indeed Dirty Harry 4.

Are you sure the rumor wasn't that it was Dirty Harry 6? Not trying to nitpick, because like I said, I love the reviews and agree on almost all of them, it's just that there are already five official Dirty Harry movies. For example, Rocky Balboa wouldn't tentatively be called Rocky 4 when Rocky 5 had already been released.

It's a Norwegian film about two mentally unstable men who move out of an institution and into an apartment together. They then overcome their difficulties with each others support. Really funny and really touching.
