The Secret of NIMH - a strange movie but has an excellent sword fight that is a must-see!
Assuming we all haven't seen Secret of Nimh 50 times...
But yes, it's awesome as fuck!
And yes, Chronicle is filmed in found footage, and has a few creative ways to keep the footage going after the initial "camera man" for reasons cannot film himself. It's also not really a horror film.
I watched 'Moneyball' last night. Overall, it was decent. I can't quite understand why it is as highly touted as it has been this year, but it's still better than a lot of the flicks I saw this year. It had some nagging continuity issues which I'm a stickler for. There were a few that were noticeable early in the film where the season progression was being tracked through a standings graphic, and the action would take place before or after the date on the graphic. Small beans, I know, but I always seem to notice these things in movies and they always bother me.
There was a part of the film near the end that was edited very awkwardly in my opinion. It is where Pitt and Jonah Hill are lamenting on their season and Pitt had just received an offer from the Red Sox. The exchange between the 2 is cut awkwardly to the point where it is clear that dialogue is missing. There is no flow. Plus the scene leads us to believe that Pitt has accepted the job when indeed he had not. If they were trying to create a suspense angle there by leading us one way and then going another, fine, I get that. But I don't think they were. Not the way that scene plays out. I think they changed some plot points and cut out some stuff based on the strange inconsistent exchange that plays out there.
The under utilization of Philip Seymour Hoffman as the manager was just criminal. He is written completely one-dimensionally, and Hoffman literally goes to waste. He has so little to work with, with the character, yet he brings him to life and adds a layer of complexity to him. Hoffman is truly gifted and, by far, the best actor in this film. They should have given us more of him. He has too few scenes. From what we get though, Hoffman manages to make him so interesting.
All of the performances are strong, but I feel that the film lacks overall characterization. It's just the way it is written. The characters are not written to be that complex. That would be fine, except for the fact that at the film's conclusion they decide to put in a tear jerker-type scene for effect. Pitt's character is divorced and has a daughter. He and his daughter seem to have a great relationship, but I would estimate she is in the film a total of 2 minutes, and that might be generous. At the end of the film, they are playing up the angle that Pitt stays in Oakland for her and he starts crying when he hears her sing. Fine, I get it, but there weren't any prior emotional scenes in the film. And I can't say that the film did anything to warrant a cry from the audience. It's just an odd ending that feels unnatural in comparison with the rest of the film.
the hole from joe dante
good movie really like it
now hoping that he s willing to make a new gremlins movie
Last movie I saw was The Train with Burt Lancaster. It's about the end of world war 2 with the Nazis stealing art in france via railway. Burt Lancaster is one of the french resistance and is tasked with many others to keep the painting from being stolen from France. It's a very good film and being shot in black and white back in 1965, it's probably the last black and white action movie that was filmed. Highly recommended with great pacing, it holds up very well today.
The Train is an awesome classic and a railfan I liked it very much!
I just watched Goon. Fucking epic.
Drive. Didn't like it.
I just finished Immortals.
...I guess not so "Immortals". I thought it then, I it's confirmed after all. Total God of War wannabe.
Watched a double bill of A Nightmare on Elm Part 2 & Part 3: Dream Warriors. The second movie was decent, the 3rd movie had me in stitches. Best bit of the two? The nerdy kid zapping Freddy with magic, only for Fred to grab him, saying something along the lines of "I don't believe in fairy tales" and then gutting the little prick; cheesy as hell, especially as the nerd declared himself as the "Wizard Master" beforehand. :D
Suppose it's time for some Oscar quips.
Oscar's were pretty nondisappointing this year. A little boring, predictable. Crystal was surprisingly bland expect for him looking at Nick Nolte and going "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
Most of the other presenters were fun. Cirque De Solei was pointless. Hugo won more tech awards than it deserved, Drive has nothing. Harry Potter has nothing.
But...

Yeah, pretty fun night.
If anyone here hasn't caught The Artist yet, do so. Hopefully the it's new shiny Oscars will get more people to finally go see it.
