Van Helsing
I love this damn movie. I think it's one of the best action films this past decade. It's better than all three transformers, and most of the superhero movies out there. The over the top acting, nonstop action combined with a sublime lack of superfluous romance scenes and overcooked origin stories make it a very entertaining movie to me. It's got everything a fantasy action film needs, even a vampire vs werewolf fight at the end.
pacific rim... nice one
I watched the Evil Dead remake the other day. I didn't care for it. It lacks the charm and sardonic air of the original. I also watched Solomon Kane. Another "movie by numbers" film. It was your typical origin story, full of emo, redemption, damsel getting rescued, and big CG monster at the end. Reading the back of the box was more interesting than the film itself. I should have just watched the original Evil Dead and Van Helsing again.
Last night was Firewalker starring Chuck Norris. The movie was OK but the title seemed to be out of place. They bring up the Firewalker during the movie but it doesn't really fit in properly.
Recently....
Man of Steel - I really loved this flick. The level of destruction in this movie was so outrageous that it had me giddy. I thought the juxtopostion of warm flashbacks with intense (almost gaudy) action and impressive CGI really worked with me. To me, the casting was perfect (I absolutely loved Micheal Shannon as General Zod). Over the top? Probably, but this is the kind of over the top that I can get on board with.
The Conjuring - I am a big horror nerd, and I found this competent and worth watching, especially in comparison to other recent ghost stories and excorsism flicks. Solid acting and admirable atmosphere and direction. I think that if this same movie had come out in the 70s or 80s (and I had grown up with it), I would probably consider it one of the stronger movies in its sub-genre. I can see that this movie is a little polarizing because mainsteam horror movies havent been very good lately, and this one is actually pretty decent, so quite a few people are throwing the scariest-movie-ever suggestions out there. I am pretty desensitized to scare formulas in horror films now, but this one would have spooked the hell out of me had I seen it when I was younger.

I watched another movie today. It's called, "Pistol Whipped" starring Steven Seagal.
Today I watched the new wolverine movie, for me it was a big and giant "MEH!"
