Anyone else see Guardians of the Galaxy over the weekend?
Was a really fun movie. I expected it to either be terrible or awesome, and was pleasantly surprised how well they pulled it off.
A lot of characters that comic readers will have absolutely no idea about, but they did a great job on them and were mostly all presented well.

I just saw 'The Expendables 3'.

I've seen Guardians of the Galaxy and Expendables 3 now, both ended up being a solid "meh" for me. I'm not sure why Guardians is getting so much praise with such a bog standard storyline, to me it was exactly like watching another new Star Trek Abrams flick, especially with Uhura as a green chick in there. I enjoy the new Treks for what they are though, and I think they have better team/friendship building aspects than Guardians does. Expendables was just all action and cameos for me, which isn't a bad thing but no part of the story or dialog tugged at my heart strings at all.
For me, I liked GoG because sure... it wasn't breaking new ground story wise, but it had a generally likable case of characters, and was a pretty good amount of fun. It never took itself overly serious, and it just seemed like it was content to let you have fun and enjoy the ride.Quote:

All said and done, I liken it to the Indiana Jones movies (the good ones). It's a fun romp with characters that don't sweat stopping and cracking wise. It doesn't take itself seriously very often, and was just... generally a bunch of fun to watch. Perfect? Not at all. Not as a movie, nor as a marvel property (although some of that has to do with the annoying state of who owns what rights).
I watched the original 1950's Invasion of the Body Snatchers last night.. So good.
Watched Army of Darkness last night, further cementing the reasons I haven't bothered with newer stuff for a very long time.
They just can't make stuff like this anymore, can they?
I feel the same way. While I really enjoyed the movie and can't really find any faults in it I really can't figure out why people are going so bonkers over it (maybe because I never heard of the Guardians until they announced the movie). IMO Captain America: Winter Soldier is better, but I'm incredibly biased as he's one of my favorite Marvel heroes so I would probably still like it even if it sucked (like the Punisher movies).Quote:

In the process of watching It's a mad, mad, mad world. Damn thing is two VHS cassette's long but so far it's been worth it.
I felt that Guardians was more original,maybe because it is more science fiction oriented and I like that.
BTW I also saw 'The Purge 2' and and it was ridiculous in the worst way.
I haven't seen Winter Soldier yet (will soon enough), but the first film was fairly terrible. I loved when Cap would blast some henchmen and there wouldn't be a single ricochet or bullet impact even when there was a ladder between them...nothing but nameless henchmen falling over like a scene out of Yellowbeard.
I can understand how Guardians feels a bit like an Abrams film, but at the same time it wasn't exactly written by Orci and Kurtzman. The first Trek reboot was insanely idiotic. Guardians is nowhere near that bad (though it does have plenty of shortcomings...the big battle especially). I didn't watch the second Trek film, though...except for the terrible scene where the "superior being" Khan beams the torpedoes. I guess it would probably be fair to say that the end of Guardians wasn't much better. At least in Guardians I can pretend that he knew all along and only made a scene to save face in front of his men...
I thought the first Captain America movie and the character's appearance in Avengers was barely passable, almost a proof of concept but not much more. Winter Soldier actually made me like the character and believe this super serum was something that would cause so much trouble. It is night and day between the two. I think I would prefer to watch Guardians another ten times than the first Cap movie.
