Goodfellas: All the wasted years of me not seeing this movie! Awesome all around!
Gaslight: The 1940 original is still a favorite of mine, and I was suprised to see it on TMC last night.
The Producers: Crappy advertising still has most people nsure that this even came out. I love it though and I wish I could have seen the original broadway show live.
Battle Royale II reminds me of the contrast of the Mortal Kombat movies, where the first one was so awesome, and the second one just is plain horrible.
Yep, i'm still the only one to care for this thread.
Casino Royale: Awesome
Dreamgirls: Eddie Murphy: Acadamy Award Winner.
For my own benefit, I've decided to recap all of the 2006 releases I've seen through the year. They all get the out-of-four-star treatment for some reason.
Apocalypto: Engrossing atmosphere and setting. Go in without having brushed up on the actual course of the Mayan civilization, and it makes for quite a show. ***
Beerfest: A serious disappointment - lame, lame humour. Super Troopers was a fluke. *
Blood Diamond: A powerful film. Watch this, and let the subsequent loathing of the diamond trade blossom. ***1/2
Borat: People seem to really enjoy this one. I laughed very little. Not Beerfest bad, but the hype and critical acclaim confused me greatly. *1/2
Casino Royale: The first viewing was quite incredible. The second time around, it's not nearly as strong.. flaws ignored show themselves. Still the finest Bond in quite some time, and I have high hopes for the coming installments. ***
Children of Men: Bloody amazing. From a filmmaking perspective, there are things done here that are damn near impossible in their complexity. From a viewer's perspective, it's bleak, immersive, and completely fantastic. ****
The Da Vinci Code: Preposterous leaps of faith are required to buy into how the plot progresses. Entertaining, but braindead and forgettable. **
Grandma's Boy: Surprisingly hilarious. I had low expectations, and planned to happily bypass this one. I'm glad fate steered this one into the movie viewing regime. ***
Harsh Times: This movie left the deepest impression of anything I've seen all year. Absolutely intense and unforgettable. ****
Jackass: Number 2: Fewer duds than in the original motion picture Jackass. Endearing lowbrow humour. Damned hilarious. ***1/2
Lucky Number Slevin: Stylish, but a pauper's payoff for such a huge buildup. **1/2
Miami Vice: What a barrel of shit. The cast tries so painfully hard to "be cool," yet the result is embarrassingly bad. The plot is an unfocused mess, the characters are forced and shallow, and, to be blunt, it's just fucking boring. *
Pan's Labyrinth: Very good, but I feel it misrepresents itself.. it's far more a post-war drama than a fantasy tale. Surprisingly violent. ***
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest: I just didn't buy into it. The lush backdrops, the freakish seamutants, and Jack Sparrow's reckless hijinks are all highlights, but the plot was.. weak. The cliffhanger ending created little in the way of a sense of tension or urgency. Overall, it was entertaining, but not impressive, closely mirroring my opinion of #1. **1/2
Rocky Balboa: Damned inspirational. Definitely a movie to bring you out of a sour mood, and a classy conclusion to a tired franchise. ***
Saw III: The metaphorical deathtraps are the worst yet. The absurdity of the franchise's premise is becoming more prominent with each passing episode. Cheap, gory thrills are all I expected of this, and even then I was let down. *1/2
Silent Hill: Not without its flaws, but there are moments of this film that are as intense as anything I've seen. A sequel would be most appreciated. ***
Snakes on a Plane: Not "so bad it's good," just a shit movie that squandered its potential and hype. It should never have made it to theatres. *
Strangers With Candy: I've yet to watch the television show this is a retelling of, but based purely as a stand-alone movie, I was quite amused. A nice surprise. ***
Superman Returns: Lukewarm. Passable. **1/2
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby: From the previews, I expected hilarity. Instead, it turned out to be Beerfest +1. Failed comedies are especially painful to watch. *1/2
Thank You For Smoking: Charismatic and clever. An excellent movie and highly recommended. ***1/2
V For Vendetta: Very good. ***
I hope to squeeze in several more Oscar contenders before the awards show, but from what I've seen as of now, Children of Men is the strongest of 2006. I sincerely hope it takes some big name awards. I'd love to see Harsh Times get some kind of recognition, but I expect it will not. It has been largely ignored by both audiences and critics alike.
The Prestige:
God Damn.
I need to see the movie again, it was that good. The movie keeps you guess and you still can't tell what exactly happened even after watching it all. Even with out the twists, it was still an awesome movie.
Stan Lee's Lightspeed:
Ugh. Comic to movie translations have officially hit rock-bottom with this one. One of Marvel's lamest properties is even worse as a film. Ridiculously dull all the way through, and some parts just make no sense. Also, Sean Connery's son sucks. This movie wasn't even bad in an entertaining way, it was just boring. Apparently this was produced by the Sci-Fi channel, which is notorious for bad movies, but this was horrible even by their standards. I can't believe they had the audacity to release it on DVD.
Dragon:
This movie rocks. It's like a good fantasy film and a crappy b-movie at the same time. Everything about this is both good and bad, like they couldn't decide whether they were making a serious movie or not. Overall, I was quite entertained by the bad attempts at old english, horrible script, and everything else.
Just saw Rocky Balboa today, I give it three and a half outta five. It's good, a touch cheesy at times but it kicks the crap out of every Rocky except the first one. The big fight at the end was done really well, and you really find yourself rooting for Rock, which is quite a feat, all things considered.
Rocky is a solid show, most definitely. Very uplifting, and a nice reminder that Stallone is a talented dude. As far as franchise revivals go, though, I can't imagine him being able to resurrect Rambo with the same skill.. I still find it hard to believe that's even happening.Quote:

I'm actually a little more excited for the next Rambo, but that's because I loved the Rambo movies as a kid, whereas I didn't even see the Rocky movies until recently. I know, I know...
I've been following the race since last years show actually. Babel probably wont be a major award taker, but it should win something big. Maybe Supporting Actor, but Pitt has tough competition with Murphy, Arkin, Sheen, Affleck, etc.Quote:

Well, I finally got to see 300 tonight.
I fucking loved it. That's all I have to say.
THIS IS SPAAAAARTAAAAA!
Didn't watching it make you feel like a manlier man, somehow?
All you need for a tv is Schindler's List, man is that good!
I really was just waiting for the lobster boy to come into battle, but he's introduced and then forgotten 5 seconds after the intro. Damn it.
Lobster boy? Who is that? lol? ;D
In 300, he pops up and kick ass for about 3 seconds of screen time, then is never mentioned again.
I'm not really one for blood 'n' guts, but the battle sequences in 300 are excellent.
Just seen The Illusionist. Wow, what a great film, I say keep these magic films coming.
Saw 'Smoking Aces' recently. That movie TOTALLY SUCKED.
Battlefield Earth:
Never saw it until just now, and wow, 7 years of hearing about it being the worst movie ever didn't prepare me for how bad it is. So bad it is downright funny, funnier than most comedies. I downloaded the rifftrax for it and it was hilarious.
Goodfellas arrived in the post today :D now that is a film.
Let's see. Sunshine. From the trailers I expected The Core - IN SPACE! WITH THE SUN! Luckily, it ended up as more of a mash-up between 2001: A Space Odyssey and Alien.
Good points? There's practically zero technobabble for a film set fifty years in the future; it's subtle, believable sci-fi.
Bad points? The plot twist isn't really explained. I can't really go into it without spoiling the film :(
Bottom line? It's a good film, but it still left me with a 'what the fuck' feeling at the end.
edit: Looking forward to Grindhouse. It's not out yet :(
edit2: And 28 Weeks Later. Loved the original.
I really want to see Transformers... I can see myself picking up a few of the action figures... I already have a list... but I won't go to basic traning until this fall.

Just seen Perfect Blue. Grand movie, and I'm not even much of a fan of anime. Wow, I really recommend this film to everyone who likes suspense driven affair.
And Children of Men too, which I just saw recently, another edge of your seat classic.
Ya, children of men was hella good.
The next movie i need to see is ATHF:MF4T
THE AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE MOVIE WILL BE ONE OF THE FUNNIEST MOVIES YOU'LL EVER SEE IN THEATRES. SEE IT NOW BEFORE IT HITS DVD NEXT MONTH.
Seriously, it's awesome if your a fan of the show.
If you don't see it, i'll cut you with a linoleum knife.
Also, I saw Norbit, and it was okay, but it's a shame the movie pretty much cost Eddie his oscar.
I saw this after arriving too late at the pictures to watch some other film, and to be honest I expected another V for Vendetta (quite possibly the most 'Internet cool' movie I've ever seen). I was pleasantly surprised to get an intelligent nihilistic thriller instead :)Quote:

Blades of Glory is the funniest movie to come out this year so far, and I don't just mean because it's April. This will probably be one of the funniest movies all year. And it's got Pam from The Office in lingerie, so that helps too.
Hot Fuzz works out very well as an action-comedy that acts like it's going to be serious, but then it reminds you the whole things a joke. And someone used the word "tosh", and I had to explain to everyone else in my movie party what it ment. Thanks Sega-16!
Spider-Man 3 wasn't the best of the 3, but I liked it better than 2. The ending seemed a little odd, considering we know the same people wont be in the next movie.
And also, Peter goes emo and everyone laughs at him, and I laugh along with the rest of the theatre.
I have Spiderman on DVD, but I still haven't watched the damn thing yet.
I finally got around to buying a copy of Dr. Strangelove. It's really, really, good... there's a reason it's considered a classic. Even though it's a Cold War period piece, the skewerings of superpower politics and tensions are still pretty much timeless. And it will still make you laugh out loud even after all of this time.
28 Weeks Later: thumbs down. The original was all haunting and lonely and desperate; it didn't really need a sequel in the first place. Noooo, suddenly everything has to be left open for a trilogy :(
I mean, I loved how there were cute little touches sprinkled through the first film: Frank and Hannah's Christmas lights, 'THE END IS EXTREMELY FUCKING NIGH', and all that. There's a 'very special' kid as the main character in 28WL, and there's no real character development, just action sequences strung together. It tries so hard - American jets firebombing London streets, convenient not-quite-explanation of how the Rage virus survived the hosts starving, helicopter slicing up a crowd of Infected.
Not a bad movie, just too dissimilar from the original for my liking.
BACK FROM THE DEAD FOR MR.MATTHEWS!
Thanks, Vinny.
The last two movies I've seen are ones my wife bought spontaneously: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Hellboy II.
Indiana Jones 4 was full of cringe-worthy moments (starting with the nuclear explosion in the beginning). The most jaw-droppingingly "COME ON!!!" moment for me, however, was when Indiana felt the need to jump into a very Ross Geller-like lecture detailing the differences between quick sand and dry sand . . . as he was sinking in it. All in all, a complete piece of crap from beginning to end, which not only the fantastic Cate Blanchett could save.
Hellboy II was alright, I suppose. The great thing about the original was it spliced a very mundane, every-man love story with an over-the-top, gothic adventure, with a light sprinkling of subtle, dry humor throughout. Hellboy II, on the other hand, was all over-the-top, and the humor was neither dry nor especially effective. The make-up effects were spectacular, however (especially for Abe).
And Abe and Hellboy singing Barry Manilow.
Didn't know Hellboy was a lightweight.
And I thought I'd miss David Hyde Pierce as Abe, but Doug Jones sounds just like him
