I have a Sony WEGA that i picked up on craigslist and it looks awesome for ps2 and xbox games, but I'm wondering if the non flat tube tvs look better for 32 bit and older systems. Just wanted to get some opinions because i'm looking to get the best tv possible for older systems. Thanks in advance
Dithering and aliasing is going to be a lot more visible on that set than it would be on an SDTV. Also, light guns will not work. Also, as I understand it HD CRTs don't have any scanlines.
No need to change if you're going component. For composite or S video a standard tv will look better. Generally you'll want a blue screen video mode rather than black or using channels 3/4, and the best determinant is brightness, the brighter the better--if you're buying somewhere you can't take a game system try it with a film originally filmed in standard def. If it looks dark or grainy so will your contemporary game machines. You should be able to get an optimum picture under 90% brightness; you want to leave a little leeway in case one retro system puts out darker colour than another (they do). Sanyo or Samsung might be the way to go. Also don't give up on any brand after trying one set, SD tvs are beginning to die at this age.
Does he have an HD CRT? Just because it's a flat tube doesn't mean it's HD. My Samsung Flat-tube CRT is standard definition.Quote:

The Wega line came out in 1998, there are definitely non-HD models. The HD ones are the ones labeled Hi-Scan or Super Fine Pitch. And I know they will eventually die, but the idea that they are all starting to die right now is a bit absurd if you ask me.

The VERY best TV for retro games is an old 4:3 SD CRT with component and S-Video in.
You can hook up all consoles capable of RGB via an RGB to component transcoder and they will look arcade / home computer quality.
The perfect 4:3 crt screen size for me is 27".
I've read many times that the last gen Sony Wegas aren't so great and have a subpar component image.
For screen size, to me it depends on the size of the room.
For my bedroom I'm perfectly fine with a 19".
From what I've seen all of the Sony TVs from the mid 90s on were designed to be disposable like any good Walmart or Circuit City brand TV. I personally prefer a pre-Thompson RCA 27" or 32" set with Component, S-Video and Composite inputs. Post-Thompson RCA is as bad as Sony or Sanyo for reliability.
I would imagine though that using a good Video adjustment DVD like Video Essentials would prolong the life of any Television. Leaving them on factory specs is a bad idea for a lot of reasons. Just make sure your DVD player doesn't have any black level filters or anything like that, the picture will end up way too dark for game consoles if it does.

Late 90s to early 2000s Sony Trinitrons that are SD are the best IMHO. If you can get one with a flat tube to avoid warping you're probably set.

Does the Super Scope use a sensor bar like the Wii? None of the light gun games I've played work on a LCD or HD CRT. They have to sync with an interlaced display, and because of that they won't work with an HD CRT, LCD or Plasma.Quote:

You can't make an interlaced display do something it is not capable of. The Genesis may display everything in the first sweep of the gun across the CRT (240p), but the second sweep will be your scan lines. The television industry used to call 1080i, 540p, but nobody uses that term anymore.Quote:

I just recently picked up a 27"-ish Phillips CRT (curved), dated sometime in 1995, for five big ones.
It has RF, composite and S-Video, all on separate input settings. It also has audio output. Now my mini-component and speakers will work with everything connected to the TV. :D
The picture on it is really nice too. Looks like it still has lots of life left in it. I'm so happy I found this TV.

It doesn't look how it was intended.
It adds lag in even the best sets. Most gamers won't notice, but on my set it can add as much as 3-4 frames of lag per second. It is really hard to tell, but in fast paced action games it makes difficult sections even more so.Quote:

To most people, it's a bad thing. Usually because the HDTV processes the low resolution retro console poorly, resulting in artifacts, lag and other problems. Deciding to use an HDTV is entirely dependent on the person though, everyone's tastes are different.
What I don't understand, is why so many people ask about old consoles on HDTVs? Is it so hard to keep a CRT around? The only TVs I use for old consoles are CRTs. Hell, my eMac has a CRT display, and I use a CRT with my Windows 2000/98 PC. Not only are CRTs compatible with old hardware, they are often dirt cheap. Their only problem is weight and physical size, but that can be worked around.
The NTSC standard is 640 x 480. The first sweep is 320 x 240 (240p). The second sweep is another 320 x 240. The 240p image is processed in one sweep and the second sweep produces the scan lines since there is no image for the secondary sweep.Quote:

The problem is 240p native TVs are not commercially available on a wide scale. If at all. Any standard NTSC TV must process progressive video into interlaced form, or it wouldn't display.Quote:
