Interesting. The bigger question for me is, is Platinum developing?
Eh, I like Bayonetta somewhat but it's not a system seller for me. Big news for fans though.
Yes Platinum is developing it, according to GameSpot's article on this at least. Nintendo is publishing it hence the exclusivity.
I wonder if Sega is still involved at all and either way,if the sequel with have Nintendo references in it.
Interestingly, I like Bayonetta.
What's Bayonetta and why is it apparently a system seller?
Platinum is Developing it, Nintendo is Publishing it, and Sega is on as an Advisory role.
Meh. If the Wii U carry's on the Nintendo tradition of mediocrity set by N64, Cube, and Wii in regards to the library?
Then for each exclusive the system gets like this, will then be followed by 40+ titles that NEVER see a release on the console(but get released on 360 & PS3).
Not impressed.
How are the Gamecube and Wii libraries Mediocre? Yeah theres a lot of shovelware on the Wii, but there's also a lot of great titles.
Well, good for the WiiU but it's not a system seller for me. After all the hype and excellent reviews, I found Bayonetta to be one of the most disappointing games that I have ever played. I wanted to love it but just ended up a bit underwhelmed.
Many of us have outgrown new console hyperbole. Show us viable entertainment and we'll bite, but so far nothing is exciting.
This really doesn't matter to me, simply because I don't really like modern beat em ups/hack n' slash games. I'm ok with them if they're like Batman Arkham City or Assassins Creed, but I just don't have the time or patience to master a game like DMC or Bayonetta. Sorry folks.
I'll just stick to my PC for now. I'm due for a graphics card upgrade in the near future, but that's about it. It's cheaper than paying 400$ for a new console, and all of my games are backwards compatible.
What made Bayonetta great wasn't just that it was a hack n' slash brawler. It was that it oozed with Sega's style. The classic Sega Arcade references and the fact the game never took itself too seriously were what made it a blast to play through in my opinion.
Sega actually cancelled this game and Nintendo picked up the publishing rights making it a Wii-u exclusive. Yet another epic Sega failure. Unfucking believable.:bang::hand::furious:
At least we still get to experience playing Bayonetta 2, thanks to Nintendo.
The Twitter screen grabs are from the neogaf.com thread.

I'm not saying Wii didn't have any good games, but it also missed out on a ton of great stuff in this console generation. Unforgivable. Also despite its initial popularity it still flopped and died pretty quickly. WTF?
360 & PS3 are still going strong and will be around for a few more years after the next consoles are released. Wii however, has been dead and gathering dust for some time now.
Bayonetta was one of the few new-gen games I actually got to sit down and play for 5 minutes.
I wasn't impressed at all, so Megaton bomb seems quite overrated to me.
still not impressed, sorry
Gamevet's description is right, and it's not a system seller any more than Madworld was for the Wii. Personally, my Sega related system sellers would be: Sonic anything exclusive that's not sports or Riders, the SoR update they cancelled, Valkyria Chronicles 4, or an exclusive offline Outrun.
On an unrelated note your new avatar's pretty funny.
I didn't really get a Sega vibe from it other than the obvious references which were indeed great. The style was just in keeping with the earlier Devil May Cry games only taken to the Nth degree.
Like I said it's a cool game, but only if you can appreciate it as the silly spectacle that it is. Gameplay wise it's not my cup of tea either though but I was able to get through just to see what crazy thing happened next.
I don't really feel like there needs to be a sequel in the same way I thought No More Heroes didn't really need a sequel. It's cheesy fun for one ride but I don't think it's going to hold my interest as easily the second time around.
Yeah, it was Devil May Cry, which I don't like, with a really freaking weirdo chick and a couple of Sega references. I was not impressed, beat it and sold it. I'd rather play Ninja Gaiden II on 360 than a sequel to this, and it has sat on my shelf unplayed for years now.
^^ While the main character constantly straddled the line between hot and goofy, the game she was in was pretty awesome!! I loved that shooter stage.
I reference this gem(and others like the DMC series) to anyone who tries to say the Beat'em up genre never lived past the 16-bit days and is no longer relevant. Beat'em ups are still with us. They just look a little different.
I would consider the DMC games more of hack and slash. The same goes for GoW. Mark of Kri really puts me in the mind of a Beat'em up though.
I consider the DMC games and God of War Action-Adventure games, like Zelda but with weird hollywood wannabe stories and just enough moves to seem better. Beat-em ups are a lot different than these games are.
I don't know, I just find this funny. She did give me something of an Aeon Flux vibe----not the mildly awful anime sponge-up Aeon Flux but the bottom of the cesspit flick Aeon Flux.
Am I the only one for whom Sega's egotism is not a selling point? I really don't want to watch Sega crawl up its own arse in every game. Fine for All Stars games or Ryo playing the old arcades, but "OMG I remember him from that other game they just made last month!" is not a sensation I need to experience.Quote:
and a couple of Sega references.
re DMC/brawlers = how tenable/valuable do you feel the distinction between Hack and Slash and Brawler? I'm not persuaded there's a real difference. H&S would be the more superficial variety but even back in the 16 bit days there were plenty of those. The weapons themselves don't make much difference.
------damn you ninja sheath! we posted at the same minute -------- all right, so clarify the distinction.
---- somebody needs to make a ninja smiley
If I had my way Beat-em ups and Hack n Slash games would be the same genre defined only by whether or not the characters are always holding bladed weapons. I don't consider DMC, God of War, Legacy of Kain, or any other similar games, including Bloodrayne and whatever else, Beat-em ups or Hack n Slash games. These are Action-Adventure games with varying degrees of combat mechanics just as sure as the Batman Arkham games are Metroid games with a group fighting mechanic.
In Beat-em ups the action doesn't stop for anything, not puzzles, not exploration, not detective work, nothing. I can only concede dialog and a storyline should be allowed in a proper Beat-em up, but if I have to spend tons of time back tracking, gaining new abilities, learning new spells, and exploring new areas for doodads, it is absolutely not a Beat-em up.
Imagine Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Final Fight or Streets of Rage where you spent entire levels simply walking from one end to the other enjoying the view. Then the objective of the next level is to find the lever that opens the door at the beginning of the scenic first scene. That door opens up a closet/secret box with a fire ax/pick in it so you can then progress to the wooden door at the end of section three and begin a fight scene. That is not a Beat-em up.
They're whatever genre Beyond/Legend of Oasis is.
What about driving? I'm trying to work out a marriage of Streets of Rage and Outrun. Right now it's making my nose bleed.
Your distinction does just make them the same thing. Golden Axe is a hack and slash now? Boo.
I would like some interludes to brawler games though. Mainly something lightgunnish--think Bayou Billy and Alien Storm. For a SoR type brawler though it'd be more fun if the interlude involved vandalism, ie your characters brickbatting factory windows, with lightgun or controller crosshairs. (That makes it sound like shitty Timesplitters 2 though---this should be in a fun way).
Bonus rounds and special segments can be added to any genre. It is just a matter of what the gameplay focus is on. If it is beating the crap out of hordes of enemies, then it is a beat-em up. If it is power ups, exploration and story, it is something else. If it is beating the crap out of hordes of enemies to explore new areas or advance a story, or gain a power up, then it is still a beat-em up.
The lines can be blurred, they just don't tend to be.
Golden Axe has always been hack and slash to me. I have a simple criteria. In a beat'em up you're primary attacks are with you're fists and body using martial arts. In a hack'n slash your primary attacks are with a melee weapon of some kind that is continuously in your possession.
Die Hard Arcade is a beat'em up because none of the weapons you get are permanent, but the use of your fists and martial arts are. GoW and DMC are hack'n slash because Kratos and Dante always have weapons.
as far as platinum games goes, I very much preferred Vanquish over Bayonetta.
Just saw this thread. Bayonetta is considered a megaton? BAYONETTA? REALLY? I mean it was pretty good. Not great or anything, but pretty good... if you played it on the Xbox360. if you played it on the PS3 you had a much worse time. Anyway, like I said it was pretty good, but not something I craved a sequel for, especially a same-generation sequel. I'd like my sequel to be next-generation powered.
Here's my review of Bayonetta
Can you really reason with a Ninty fanboy?
I pretty much agree. Except that I don't see God of War or Devil May Cry as either because of all of the Adventure aspects in both games, and the overemphasis on cutscenes. Like Kamahl said, they're just 3D Beyond Oasis. If the combat gameplay was center stage they would be beat-em ups and/or hack n slash games. Golden Axe is a Hack n Slash for the reason you said, but it is absolutely Double Dragon with swords, beasts to ride and magic added.
Back to God of War or Devil May Cry though. Legacy of Kain Blood Omen was obviously a Zelda style Adventure game. Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2 were obviously Zelda 64 style 3D Adventure games. Legacy of Kain Defiance expanded the Zelda style combat into more unique combat with air combos and more magical powers, but the game still emphasized puzzles and item collecting for power ups. God of War absolutely ripped off everything that made Defiance unique from the Soul Reaver and Zelda games and only added QTE boss fights which it obviously ripped off of Shenmue while adding scale and the "Ancient Greek" theme. Devil May Cry is just an earlier attempt at the same exact formula, Zelda plus more action and weird camera angles.
The Hack 'n Slash vs. Beat'em Up thing in regards to games like Golden Axe always seems like splitting hairs to me. Golden Axe and Streets of Rage for instance are most certainly the same genre. The sprites in one of those games being permanently attached to their weapons doesn't make it a completely different style of game.
I can understand the reason for not wanting to call Golden Axe a Beat'em Up though, just from a semantics standpoint. When I don't know what to call it I just say "brawler" as a blanket term. I mean what do we call Zombie Revenge on the Dreamcast? It's a beat'em up where your character is permanently attached to a gun.
I'll give you that, but it doesn't really matter honestly because it doesn't really matter to me. Bayonetta is nice, I'm sure it's a great game for people that like DMC. I don't like DMC all that much, and it's not good enough to convince me to buy a system. But right now there isn't a whole lot that really is convincing me to buy it. I need a genre defining title like the next Super Mario 64, or a game with a compelling narrative or artsyle like Ico or Alan Wake.
This last Gen, all of the titles I've been interested in have been on the PC. Portal, Alan Wake, Bastion, Metro, Sonic Generations, Saints Row 3, there hasn't been many console exclusives that really have interested me that much, except maybe on the Wii with Super Mario Galaxy 2.
