I just received Urban Strike from a ebay seller completing the trilogy in my collection. I've only played part of Desert Strike (which is hard as hell btw) and really love this strategic shooter. I was just curious which title from the series you like best and why?
I always preferred Jungle Strike myself, but I've always preferred games/movies that take place in Jungles for some reason.
Also the intro is KICK-ASS.
Desert Strike more for nostalgia reasons, as it was my first 'Strike game. I'm sure you know this, but the Strike series continued after Urban with Nuclear and Soviet. I've not played either, but they look alright.
Only rented the first two, but I have owned and loved Urban Strike, I would regularily get advice on how to progress through the trickier later levels in the playground from my mate who had the Snes Version, never got very far though.
Also the title theme tune rocks and blows the back doors off the Snes's pale imitation.
Desert Strike for me, the first and the best in the series. I find this is one of those franchises that go progressively worse with each installment. I haven't played the PS1 games, but from the 3 16-bit titles, the first is by far the most fun.
I think Jungle Strike is the best. It took everything great from Desert Strike -which was a bit rough around the edges- and built on it to create a superior experience. Urban Strike was far too easy and seemed a bit watered down compared to the previous two.
I want to say Jungle Strike, but then again, I haven't beaten any of the three.
Jungle. It built on Desert Strike and is easily the most polished of the three. Urban's good but it felt as if they tried to squeeze too much into the space they had, and it all ended up a bit rough around the edges. Urban's indoor mission are pretty crap too. One thing about Urban has always puzzled me though: why did the scrap they originally storyboarded title sequence (camera pans up building, stops on sign at the top, explosions blow away the sign, the helicopter appears and then flies horizontally past buildings, basically like an urban version of the openings to Desert and Jungle)? When I first played the game I was so disappointed that the sequence was changed to, IMHO, an inferior one.
If it wasn't for the indoor stuff I'd say Urban but I guess I'll have to go with the crowd and say Jungle was the best.
Yeah, Jungle Strike was really good.
They ruined Urban with the nasty looking on foot segments IMO.
Was sleeping over at a friends house from grade school once and he said he couldn't wait for X-Mas day to play this game called Urban Strike, but lucky he knew where the presents were stashed so that was my introduction to a wonderful, wonderful game. Bought it as soon as possible after. Great memories with this one therefore fave Strike game, even if it's pretty easy going by recent playthrough, was never able to beat it bitd and played it a lot. Love that riffing guitar intro and each individual level map had the most tile & tile arrangement variety out of entire Trilogy, as did the levels from each other. Fastest helicopter speed is more fun too.
Did end up owning Desert Strike in the early 2000s and was surprised to see the first is very solid too. Recently enough replayed all three and the only one I couldn't beat was Jungle Strike, difficulty is all over the place but those tanks in that snow level are a complete brick wall. Now I know it's popular to dislike hard games, and this is not my MO, but Jungle's difficulty is a turn off (along with the not as fun extra vehicles forced upon you too often). Least fave Strike, despite it's stage themes being great (though too tile repetitive).
About the two 32-Bit versions, did rent them back in the day. They were quite hard for my then skill levels so never beat them (got stuck in desert level of Soviet and think stage 3 of Nuclear). Going from memory I enjoyed Nuclear more, that Jet vehicle in stage two was a highlight. Should revisit these soon with my upgraded gaming chops and avenge my childhood for great justice.
It has to be the superb Jungle Strike for me. The presentation, gameplay, story and mission structure is spot on. The equally superb Desert Strike is a close second, which means that Urban Strike comes in at third place for me. Don't get me wrong, it is a great game with superb presentation, music and gameplay, just like Jungle and Desert, but the fact remains that it is let down by the very dodgy 'on foot' missions.
On foot missions are very short and very easy (learn to abuse your range so that you can hit enemies before they're activated to shoot you). There's only 3 on foot missions too compared to the 7 helicopter missions (though the final helicopter stage was clearly rushed and too small, therefore not all that great). And if you still can't stomach those on foot missions, GameFAQ password past them. No excuse to not enjoy the finest 6 helicopter missions in Genesis Strike Trilogy.
Also, how many of you even beat Jungle Strike fair and square (no save state trickery). Because so many complain about difficult games on the internet, I call hogwash that this game would be most gamers fave in the series outside of casual playing just a few levels. Even Overdrone couldn't beat Jungle Strike, and if Overdrone couldn't beat it...
Unfortunately never played any of the other versions, although I intend to buy them. Originally played Desert Strike on the Amiga and also on the atari lynx both good versions. I currently own it on my megadrive and wish to get the complete set, great game.
Jungle Strike might be the better game but I still have a soft spot for Desert Strike, that game blew me away. I also tie it really strongly to Battletech (aka MechWarrior 3050) since I'm a lifelong Battletech fan, mecha nut, and the visuals in that game were very similar to DS.
New community projects have fallen on distinct categories like platformers, brawlers, and shmups, I'd love to do a "Mech Strike" or Front Mission style game, either for Mega Drive or Dreamcast.
