A new Ecco could be in the works!

The creator of Ecco the Dolphin has announced he is meeting with Sega to discuss a new title in the aquatic adventure series.
Ecco mastermind Ed Annunziata revealed the news via his Twitter account (via VG247, and added that publisher interest made the chances of a new game multiply by a hundred.
"Chances of a new Ecco the Dolphin x100!" he excitedly wrote.

And it won't sell to this braindead COD generation. The day when cod superseded dolphins!

Didn't he say before that he'd even be willing to finance a new Ecco game on his own if Sega would just license the damn character to him?

I really hope this happens. I think it'd have the potential to do well, just not as a standard retail game. A new side-scroller in the vein of the Genesis games for XBLA/PSN, on the other hand, definitely has a chance.

Provided this Ecco game turned out to be awesome like the first two and not tosh like Defender of the Future then I can see myself weeping tears of joy.

Praise Raul for inspiring somebody to contemplate a new Ecco game.

I hope he continues the Ecco story, but Sega probably doesn't even remember the old Ecco games so would never allow it.

Ecco? what's that? continue what story? Neh, make it a phone tablet touch screen puzzle game for little kids, little kids love dolphins!

The first two Ecco games are gold. Defender of the Future is not as good, but still decent. Ecco Jr. was rubbish though.

This is awesome news. Loved all of the Ecco games. Even Ecco Jr. was fun to play with the kids. Hopefully this will be a true 16 bit sequel to Tides of Time.

Yes! This is great news, as long as it means we get to play the real Ecco 3!

And Spencer Nilsen is doing the music? Holy crap, that's awesome. Love the Sega CD soundtracks of Ecco 1 & 2. I like the chiptunes as well, but I played the Sega CD versions first.

the dreamcast ecco game is very good. but it starts of a bit poor and it's hard(harder in a different way than the 16 bit games). but in later levels it really shines through. I wonder how many of the people who don't like ecco on the dreamcats have actually finished it

This Kickstarter is pretty interesting but I was surprised to see that the project has a pledge goal of $665,000.00! That is a pretty steap hill to climb! If it's any kind of consolation, the Kickstarter has garnered $20,402.00 thus far. Not too shabby! If it can maintain momentum, Ed Annunziata will be one happy man on April 29, 2013!

As much as I wanted to see this happen, I gotta say, a "spiritual successor" to Ecco doesn't really sound all that appealing to me. I know all the right people are involved, but I wanted to see Ecco 3, not just some game in the vein of Ecco.

I really admire Ed's passion for making this happen, though (despite HOLYFUCKINGSHIT$650K). God damn it, Sega, just license the fucking character to him already, it's not like you assholes are doing anything with it.

Yeah this thing what he's making is not Ecco, it sounds.. interesting but its no Ecco.

I thought he and Sega already came to an agreement? guess that changed.

He should just make an offer to Sega to buy the Ecco IP, then start a kickstarter for that titled "Get Ed back his Dolphin!"

Repped for getting it right. Ecco was never that good of a game, it was very atmospheric, repetitive, and seriously needed a saving feature. Kickstarter isn't bad for actual good ideas. The difference between kickstarter and pre-kickstarter was before there was kickstarter you didn't see all the dumb ideas that were constantly being pitched, the only thing we ever saw was the stuff that got paid for. Now in the kickstarter era two things have changed, 1: You see all the dumb@ss ideas that get pitched publically and 2: The public decides what gets funded, instead of some dude(s) in a suite. Expect to see a neverending flow of stupid ideas thanks to people now publically pitching their money making plans.

Ecco has passwords, saves aren't needed.

It's better to have the public decide what's released or not, not overpaid lawyers, executives and whatnot in suites. If you don't like it, just ignore it.

Passwords have always sucked. The only time I put up with passwords is for short games, I still will always hate passwords. I agree that it's better for the public to decide what gets made.

Shame the Big Blue didn't reach it's goal, although it was pretty steep. Ecco the Dolphin, in context, was an awesome experience. When I first heard of it I imagine it would be some awful hippy tosh about saving the planet (and this is before being of an age to understand how awful hippies are) and instead it was an awesome atmospheric romp around the ocean with not a hippy in sight.

I would guess, not alot of gamers remember it. And that only SEGA fans recall the experience.

Maybe Sega should release the first 2 games on XBL,PSN,iOS and Android.
