There was never a stage when buying this stuff was a good deal, it was barely better than buying the arcade cabinet itself.
Neo Geo would've been a better option IMO, the games were more expensive, but the hardware was, what? $7000 $4000 odd cheaper? so in the early 90s you could get a Neo Geo and like 30 15-20 odd games for the price of buying the X68000 alone.
