They look like the prerendered scaling sprites in some Genesis and PCE games. If it was real-time, they likely would be more garbled, have more consistent frames and be based on either the smallest or largest frame. The smallest frames in particular stop looking like their scaled down. they look like they touched up the pixel art to make it legible at those sizes, even though it breaks the effect.
A TV of the Day in basic terms and where MD and Snes graphics looked their best with scan lines intact.Quote:
What does playing on a crt mean
I'm only going on what SM told Nintendo Japanese mag in a interview and how the game was using the 1st generation Super FX chip one give that it started out production at the same time and made to make complete use of that Super FX chip. They again there's a Retro Gamer interview with the programers of Stunt Racer FX - who make out its using the 2nd generation chip and most here beg to differ. What ever the case Yoshi Island looked pretty dam amazing and better than a lot of 2D Saturn and PS gamesQuote:
Please don't act like you know what you're talking about when you really don't
S-Video ? WHY RGB is the way for Mega DriveQuote:
My genesis is a va6 model 1 pumping out s-video from a modified 32x. The picture is absolutely crystal clear and the audio sounds perfect,
I'm not talking of today - Where my mobile phone makes Mega Drive or Snes 2D look old hat but back in 1994/5Quote:
Pre rendered CGI doesn't look too good this day and age. I don't know why you even bring DKC up.
What's that got to do with sound and GFX .Quote:
its pretty damn clear that you have next to zero experience with the game at all, you actually get killed by the mid boss twice?!?!
Not as clear You want MD res try recored a video in 320 for starters and yes you need to stop playing Batman & Robin because its full of graphical effects for the bosses and that makes a game rubbish.Quote:
So what's different on a real CRT
The Snes I play in S-Video and the Mega Drive in RGB video , but hey trying to capture a direct RGB video into the PC a pain in the ass -give the lack of RBG inputs to the PC that come in a decent price.Quote:
We already established in a much earlier argument that TA's TV and/or cables are extremely low quality
The Mega Drive only supported 1 channel for sample sound , correct ?.Quote:
God I wish I would have never replied to TA's comment about Multi-PCM playback on the Genesis
Not a hint of bias in those comments ?Quote:
i didnt understand all this mumbo jumbo about mode 7, scaling and rotation,
Lots of people would like to see graphical effects in the games - One of the 1st I remember on the MD was the back round rotation in Gynoug 1st stage or the swirling backround fire effect in Thunder Force III - Effects that make the game look nicer and give it those stand out moments that keep you playing to see what's coming next,
And you are ignore my question.
Don't stand for yours words?
I feels ya bro... He has the mind of a politician.
Can we please just Ban TA from any and all technical hardware discussions?
Nah, he's keeping this forum alive.
He completely ignored my quote of him claiming Gunstar Heros was a Saturn game. Lol what an idiot screwball.
You know what's funny? Technically the standard PC today has only TWO channel sound. Left and right, but we can play multiple sounds at once because of SOFTWARE mixing.
Just answer the Question . Does the MD only allow one of its channels to be used to play samples ?
Yes or NO ?
In Saturn threads you love to make out the Saturn hardware support for 2D planes and what not . Issues like the PS being quite able to emu the effect in software go out the window;even though it has a fast CPU . Hardware support just makes thinks better and easier for the developer
A typo by me when I mean to say Guardian Heroes, and its looks like some also do a typo (unless there is Gunstar Heros for the Mega Drive) . It happens 'screwball'Quote:

He probably just meant Guardian Heroes. People think of one game and type the name of a similar one all the time.
If "SEGA" said that, it was likely just one person making an assumption in the middle of an interview. They were also talking about something only the DC had done.Quote:
I take it we're being ironic ? SEGA said the PS2 couldn't do cel shading and well we all know what happened there . They all say silly stuffQuote:
Nintendo said that Sonic could run on the SNES. I can't remember where the quote is from, probably one of their ads.
That bs from Nintendo about the SNES running Sonic as-is, but adding in screen filling scaling sprites, so detailed that you could make out every whisker on Sonic wasn't just some silly comment. It was a crazy propaganda campaign where Nintendo bought pages of magazine space to post a bunch of lies disguised as a legit editorial that was supposed to look like the magazine doing their own article demystifying Sega's propaganda and all the secrets they were hiding. It went in depth to explain why tech specs are misleading and what the consoles actually could and could not do. Except of course it made the SNES out to be superior to the Neo Geo and the Genesis to be a barely functionng franken-console, thoughtlessly cobbled together from "off the shelf" parts. As quickly as they called out blast processing for being nonsense, they claimed the SNES could do many things several times more fantastical than blast processing.
I've posted scans of it on here in the past, but don't remember the urls right now.
Agreed it looks and sounds quite poor -given all the hype . To me the likes of super turrican 2 just pee all over itQuote:
I was very excited so was my brother which is a big Nintendo fan but we both were really disappointed when we saw the same. To start with, it's a really ugly game imo and technically speaking that game is not that impressive, even on SNES we saw really better things that this game

It was the Jet Set Radio Team them self 's and I happy to post the interview up If I must ....Quote:

Here we go! Nintendo's smear campaign is also the origin of the myth that Sega claimed there was a special chip in the Genesis called the "blast processOR".

Oh for the love of god TA we've been over this with you how many times now? Yes, the Genesis only has 1 PCM channel. BUT WITH GOOD PROGRAMMING YOU CAN GET MULTIPLE CHANNELS OUT OF IT BECAUSE OF HOW IT'S IMPLEMENTED!
For the record we never said it could do 8 like the SNES, we simply said it could do more than one with decent quality. And that is a true fact. No amount of bitching from you will change that fact. Just learn to accept it and move on.
As for the VDP2 effects of the Saturn, I point out how proper use of them could give a performance boost as you could save polygons for more important things. Sure the PS1 could do the effect in software or do it using polygons but that doesn't have the same effect that I am pointing out, and that's the performance effect. And before you start no, that's not the same with the Multi-PCM drivers for the Genesis. Those don't have an effect on performance since they run on the Z80 and don't interfere with game code running on the 68000.
Gunstar doesn't have an "e" in it, unless you're talking about heroes. But then again, a lot of games have "e" in it.
Oh, and then you said:
as if you didn't even know Gunstar Heroes was ON the Mega Drive.Quote:
(unless there is Gunstar Heros for the Mega Drive)
You spelled Heroes wrong...
That's what he's bitching about.
TA thinks he's being clever by saying "There's no 'Gunstar Heros' for the Genesis, but there is 'Gunstar Heroes'".
Oh, well in that case, my mind doesn't run down to his level.
Wow, what a load of crap! I love how they state "data retrieval" as being faster while ignoring that said retrieval is a BYTE instead of a WORD like the Genesis, and therefore SLOWER at retrieving data. It's also comparing its fastest rate against the slowest rate on the Genesis. For example, DMA reading is much faster.
Or how they compare the NUMBER of custom chips rather than what the chips are capable of. This is propaganda at its worst. :shame:
The smug wording of that article is almost akin to an Internet troll. Though I've seen it before I always forget to save it so I can post it every time a Nintendo fan cries about Sega's advertising campaigns and pretends that Nintendo's advertising was pure and innocent. Unfortunately they might believe it .
I like that the opening line seems like they're actually furiously jealous that Sonic had become enough of an icon in the US to rate a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon, so they're trying their best to make fun of the accomplishment.
They even flat out lied about the Genesis palette. They said its palette was only 256 colors instead of 512.
That is my biggest gripe with the SNES really. Why does it have such a high sprite limit and yet the games never show it? I'm guessing it is a hold over from an earlier design with a better CPU, but still I hate it when this sprite limit gets touted as though it was even remotely achievable. For all I know maybe with the largest sprite sizes it was, but I don't remember SNES games filling up with those either.
As for the smashing "article", I don't think there is any technical thing to glean from it. I just think it is interesting that Nintendo made such a big deal out of the Blast Processing campaign that they had to start trolling.
This once again goes to my underpowered CPU statement
For people who like s-video?
I just sort of rolled my eyes at his reply to my comment and that was enough. Really there's no point in replying to what he said.
fixed.
As for the tech wars...most people don't know about nintendo spewing crud about sega because nintendo didn't make a tv commercial with it like sega did.
Yea Nintendo wanted to pussy down the games.
Us with balls weren't allowed to have good games apparently.
Mortal Kombat 1 and Night Trap were the best games!
To play? No.
To jumpstart the ESRB? Yes.
And sure with good programming you can overcome issues , but that tend to leads to compromises in other area's or it not sounding or looking has good as dedicated support .Factor 5 gave a good impression of Dolby Digital on the Cube, but it just couldn't compare to the X-Box hardware support. That's what dedicated hardware support does for youQuote:
Yes, the Genesis only has 1 PCM channel.
Plenty of which SEGA used it's self . I mean Blast Processing was a total load of crap , or that the PS2 couldn't do Cel Shading and to quote the JSR teamQuote:
Wow, what a load of crap

They all play the PR game , none worse than 3D0 or SONY granted
How many Saturn games used the Saturn full Polygon limt ? Never stopped SEGA listing the full total number of Polygons on the Saturn spec sheet , never mind that was a single game that came close to its limit and the less said about SEGA America should off Model 1 and Model 2 videos and trying to pass it off as Saturn footage the better . In the end they all play the dirty war on PRQuote:
What about they saying that SNES can use the most (128) sprites simultaneously in a game
Nintendo: We must put a stop to violent video games like Night Trap!
Video Software Dealer's Association: Sega is working with us to develop a video game ratings board (instead of stifling freedom of expression like that Nintendo asshole).
Nintendo: SHUT UP SEGA FAN!
Arcade amusement guy: We're sorry for Mortal Kombat please don't kill us.
Senator Kohl: Don't try to trick me you whippersnappers, think of the children!
