Street Fighter 2 Prototype

There is a "Street Fighter 2 turbo" roms, which has nothing to do with Street Fighter 2 'Special Champion Edition on Mega Drive. This ROM makes me think of version of the game prototype or beta. But it could also be a hack created from scratch.

What are the differences between the commercial version of Street Fighter 2 'special edition and this "Street fighter 2 turbo" ?

• No logo CAPCOM but logo SEGA present at the launch of the game.
• The turbo is only a name : no accelerated speed and the majority of new strokes from Hyper Fighting are not in this version.
• There are two bonus stages, the car and barrels every 4 fights. (Instead of 3 in the commercial version.)
• Sounds and musics seems better. (Some voices are really better in this "turbo" version.)
• There are differences in the level sets of details and colors.

I'd be interested to know the origin of this version. The ROM is easy to find.


Because there is also a different version on Mega Drive which is known officially as a prototype of Street Fighter 2 'special champion. This is the prototype "16 Mega" presented to the press in March 1993 current. We can recognize it with the black band at the top of the screen :




In this version, we can play with 2 players bonus stage. This version has differences and commonalities with our "Street Fighter 2 turbo".
If someone has a ROM of this version, I would be interested.

So...

What is the "Street Fighter 2 turbo" version ? Hack or beta ?

And if this is a beta, was it made before, or after the "16 mega version" ?
Or maybe in paralell?

In colours, the differences are obvious:

In the retail version, the colors are much darker and contrasting. In this hack or this prototype, the colours are more vivid and subtle gradations.
This "Turbo" version seems closer to the SNES version.... Even prettier ....
Why did so dark colours in the retail version? Was it to stick with more "adult" reputation of the Mega Drive?

So many mysteries to solve ...

Yeah, I think we initially thought that "Turbo" was a partially finished Sega build of the game but then everybody just started calling it a hack. It is one hell of a hack though, elements of everything are different than the Capcom retail version.

How can it be an hack ? As I showed, we see it on official promo videos in 1993 from SEGA and Capcom.

The hack was made to mimic what was seen in those promo videos and old magazine pictures. Something similar was done with Sonic 1 a while ago that caused the Sonic 1 beta hoax. Basically whoever made it collected as much footage of the actual beta and then made a hack that looks like it. Why people do this I don't know, maybe for fun, maybe to trick some people into thinking they have some super rare beta cart... who knows.

It is not a hack.

The title screen is a hack, but that's it.

aka pirates got their hands on the proto and quickly hacked in a title screen so they could sell it.

Still puzzled by "ARM WRESTLING"... same as in Ninja Gaiden. Same dumper? Same source? Both bought from Gamefan staffers? LOL

Saw some pirate multicarts with this and they refer to it as Arm Wrestling on their label and menus. That's priceless. I can imagine the guy saying, "Arm Wrestling? FUCK YEAH" then his disappointment when it turns out to be SFII.

The port was slated to be released in June 1993, and was slammed by the gaming press due to the aforementioned black bars, smaller sprites and muddier color palette compared to the SNES port of SFII: WW. Perhaps because of the inferior quality to the latter, along with news that Capcom was soon releasing an SNES port of Turbo, Sega screamed Capcom's ear off over the matter. Capcom canned the port they had been working on (but not before adding some elements of Turbo to it, like the costume color schemes), pushed the release of the game to September, and spent that summer pretty much porting over SNES Turbo to the Genesis, which became SFII: Special Champion Edition.

That's why Capcom pisses me off so much. They were probably going to pinch off a quick, lazy, inferior MD port as fast as possible, while putting 100% into the SNES port. Thank god Sega had the balls to tell them where to go and start over. It wouldn't surprise me if Capcom purposely made the original MD port a piece of crap to make their daddy happy. I like a lot of Capcom's output of the 8/16 bit era, but they made no bones about their intentions and where their loyalties lied.

There's a half-dozen threads on this subject so I figure I'd bump the newest one I could find.

I've been in the process of gathering up all the info I could about the first black-bar prototype; digging through old magazines and going over everything with a fine tooth comb, spotting little differences between builds as it slowly evolved prior to it being reworked as the "Turbo beta" then scrapped for SCE proper.

I'm glad Sega cried foul and got Hyper Fighting included, and I'm glad the press put pressure on Sega/Capcom to improve the final product. But folks.... I'm not exactly sure what to say about this.

Here's SNES Turbo, MD SCE, and MD Turbo beta side by side. After rearranging the black bars to have them together rather than dividing the screen you can get an idea of how slight of hand works.

Am I seeing that right? Let's double check. 1) CE proto 2) SCE final 3) Turbo beta 4) CE proto again

So this shitstorm about huge black bars was nothing. The "huge" black bar CE had was only slightly larger than the sum of all SNES SFII:WW black bars, and all their solution to fixing CE was split the bar in half and shove the final build of SCE out the door.
