Animals that should have been Sonic friends

Ok I know what you're thinking, there are wayyyy too many fucking Sonic friends as is. And I agree. However, this is something that's been bugging me - Sega really dropped the ball with making the Sonic friends after Knuckles. Instead of introducing other cool animals, they just started making more hedgehogs, or other lame friends, like bunnies...

I always thought that since the echidna is a distant cousin of the hedgehog, why didn't they go with a procupine next? That would've been a cool adversary/friend for Sonic.

It's hedgehogesque, but bigger and more badass. I think that he'd fit right in.

They're already blue, they look cool and this way they could totally have a competition with Sonic over who's the fastest blue thing alive.

The problem is Sega's first animal friend addition was as cool an animal as it gets (fox) and their output was as lame a character as it gets (Tails). Extrapolating from that your cool new animals might have been Segafied as Prickles the Porcupine and Panoply Pangolin. Boo.

Back in its 16bit hayday, I entered a contest that asked Sega Genesis fans to draw and describe a new character for the Sonic franchise. I came up with this dolphin that had the ability to walk and had been retro-virally treated with electric-eel genes so that it could electrocute things/enemies at will. That was before I ever played Ecco the Dolphin, obviously.
