I have been thinking about this for a couple of days, since I started up the Megadrive X thread, and was thinking it may be nice to have a place to share, and discuss the various unofficial GOAC’s. Eg The Megadrive x and the Radica consoles ect.

Compatibility: Not compatible with 32x or Power Base Converter for obvious reasons due to size. Most likely not compatible with Virtua Racing or other problematic carts ie: Gargoyles, EX Mutants, etc... Although I was unable to test these due to the fact that these things are so poorly built it was impossible to fit an actual Genesis cartridge into the cart slot. (yes you read that correctly, the carts don't fit into this POS, more details below)

Video Score: Surprisingly the video quality on this thing isn't all bad. For the 20 games that it has built in (ESWAT, Golden Axe, Columns, etc...) the video looked pretty decent on the small screen (except Sonic 3D Blast which looked bad). Some of the sprites had missing pixels, but it wasn't overly terrible looking. 7/10

Sound Score: The sound is crap. A sad combination of low quality speakers and poorly emulated sound. Not good at all. 4/10 There's sound there, and it sort of sounds like what the games are supposed to sound like, but it's just generally unpleasant and you'll want to play with the volume off.

Review: If you want to spare yourself reading the following paragraph, then just know this: this product is a useless piece of shit. Here are the details. The build quality is just complete shite. I'm not sure how they designed this thing to take Genesis cartridges because they clearly do not fit into the cart slot. You can try to jam them in there as hard you want but they won't go in deep enough for the cartridge PCB connectors to make a proper connection with the system. The only way I was able to get a cart in there was to take the shell off of it and plug in the bare PCB. That was the only proof I got that the cartridge function on this thing even works. The next problem was pulling the PCB back out, the cart connectors are so tight that trying to pull the cart board back out was something of a feat of strength. That can't be good for the pin connectors (good thing I used some lame sports game to test this system). Once I finally managed to pull the cart PCB out, I heard something inside the system crack, and after that it never worked again. All this happened within the first hour of unpackaging.

The 20 built in games work ok, but it's not really the best selection of games. This thing doesn't even come with the mandatory Sonic The Hedgehog, instead you get Sonic Spinball, Sonic 3D Blast (which btw looks terrible on the small screen) and Sonic & Knuckles (the best of the bunch but less cool without Sonic 3).

The TV out works, but that's about the best that can be said of it. The quality of the composite cable, and/or of the video output looks about as good as what you'd get from the RF connection on a standard Genesis minus colour sharpness (all the colours look washed out), and the sound is just awful at that point.

I've tried 2 of these systems a black one and a blue one. The only difference is it was a little easier to get the cartridge back out of the black one, but they are both equally shitty. Avoid this thing at all costs. It'll likely damage whatever game you're trying to plug in there, and even if it doesn't, the cheap plastic and poor soldering on this thing means it'll probably break within a week of use anyway. 0/10 for an absolute piece of junk that wouldn't even make a good paperweight (the shit quality plastic case doesn't weigh very much).

Availability: Easy enough to find online. Just google it. Thankfully they're less popular than they were a year ago, but there are still enough online retailers trying to hawk these turds.

Price: $30-$60, which is $30-$60 more than it's worth.

I *think* the GenMobile is a Firecore = emulation based handheld, not a GOAC.

You might be right, I'm not 100% sure myself, since it's a Hyperkin, and I'm not sure what exactly they do. Either way, I thought people would benefit from the review in case anyone ever got the urge to buy one of these things.

If a Geniclone says AtGames on its, it's not a GOAC. It's software emulation via a Titan ARM core, which I believe should not be considered in this thread at all.

Just found the AtGames logo so it's definitely a Firecore based device.

No, AtGames is a North-American company founded by "industry veterans" (i.e. Acclaim?, ex-SOA?) and located in the Bermudas. AtGames owns the exclusive distribution rights to all things Sega in Greater China. They came up with the Firecore concept. They are to blame that hundreds of millions of customers ended up with an inferior product to even the worst clone imaginable.

Hyperkin simply owns the North-American distribution rights to one or two AtGames products. That's it.

Then why is AtGames shitting on the Genesis name

From their perspective they did the right thing: Come up with a way to make the hardware even cheaper to produce and sell it for big money. I am sure they made more money with Sega's IP than almost anyone could have anticipated. Much more.

So Hyperkin is just the distributor while AtGames is the actual developer of the hardware?

AtGames produce the hardware. They're not the actual developer of the ARM based "Titan" chip nor the software running on it. That'd be "Digital Media Cartridge", a Taiwanese company hired for the job. Involved in the final stages of development were ex-SOA engineers like T. Morita.

Interesting. It's a shame that's where Sega engineers went after the fall. I guess they had bills to pay. It's pretty sad though, it's like seeing a popular musician become increasingly less relevant until one day you catch them playing a solo gig at some sleezy dive bar with 3 sad drunks in the audience. :(

Hm, yeah, although Morita only was working for DMC over a short period of three and a half months or so. - Interestingly he was responsible for fixing the audio code. :daze:

As mentioned, this is an AtGames emulator, rather than a Genesis on a chip (hardware integrated into a single chip).

As a matter of fact, yes. All GOACs actually do have good sound, but it is ruined by inadequate audio amps. Most of the time, the audio coming out of the YM3438 within the GOAC is too strong, which causes the low frequencies to be overdriven and distort to various degrees. So, normally, all you'd have to do would be to replace the resistors directly after the YM3438's outputs. Same thing can be done to correct volume balance issues between the YM3438 and SN76489. Sometimes, though, the Geniclone in question, like the RetroGen Adapter, may not even have an amp, thus requiring you to build your own amp if you replace the resistors directly after the YM3438's outputs (and in turn, the SN76489's output to get the volume levels right again).

If you perform that mod, how does the sound compare to a HDG?

Given the right circuit, it could sound nearly identical. I say nearly because High Definition Graphics Genesis Model 1s use the YM2612, which doesn't quite sound the same as the YM3438. You can the overall audio quality of the High Definition Graphics Genesis Model 1, but you can't get the sound of the YM2612 without overloading the YM3438's outputs and potentially killing the DAC prematurely in the process.

I'm gonna get another RetroN3 in a few days and I'm gonna try to get a good amp put together for its GOAC without changing too much of the existing mixing circuit (there's no amp on the RetroN3's GOAC, just a simple mixing circuit made of resistors and ceramic caps) as the audio has so much bass, I'd like to preserve it.

Its good to hear that a GOAC can produce such good sound.

Ultimately it depends on video output. 32x must receive RGB to operate correct.

Thanks for the info lumclaw. From a little searching around, it appears these may have the RGB mixed inside the chip, so it looks next to impossible to see a 32x work with a radica! :(

Okay, here's some information on the very first GOAC I've had experience with and the two clones it's found in:

GOAC Name: TecToy-580G

Clones it is found in:

RetroBit Gen-X, Yobo Gameware GN Twin

Compatibility:

Works with pretty much everything you throw at it, however, video mixing with the 32X is not possible as of yet. The GOAC has RGB, but nobody knows which pins output RGB on the GOAC. Sega Master System games with memory paging chips are also prone to graphical glitches, and both the Gen-X and GN Twin have some issues with input lag which causes 3 games to be completely unplayable. More on that later.

Both systems are also missing the audio pins from the cartridge slot. They're there, but they're not hooked up to the audio amp at all, so if you were to use a 32X, you wouldn't hear any PWM, and if you use a Master System converter with an integrated YM2413, you wouldn't hear the YM2413's audio, either.

Video score: 7.5/10

On the Gen-X and GN Twin, the overall video quality is quite good, but the video has some noticeable color issues. It may be due to the GOAC or the video amp, but both consoles have excessively green video. Overall, though, it does look sharp and the colors are vibrant, but I noticed a few oddities with the video, most likely due to the VDP itself. The first thing is that some solid color screens may show up black rather than their proper color. The second thing is that the vertical overscan area also shows up black at all times.

Audio score: From 5/10 to 9/10

Although the TecToy-580G is capable of perfectly replicating the audio out of the Genesis, depending on the amp used, the sound may range from quite good to complete crap. The Gen-X and GN Twin fall under the latter; their audio circuitry is garbage. The audio is high-pass filtered, VERY distorted, and the PSG is so quiet, you can hardly hear it. Given the right circuit, though, the TecToy-580G could sound almost like a Genesis Model 1. I say almost as the GOAC uses a Yamaha YM3438 rather than the YM2612 like the Genesis first used, so while it can't really sound like a Genesis with a YM2612, it can sound just like one with a YM3438, and maybe even better because Sega's YM3438 amps aren't really that good compared to their YM2612 amps.

Review of the clones:

Both the Gen-X and GN Twin are decent Geniclones (though they do have an NES mixed in, which I won't talk about here). They're among the first legal GOAC-based Geniclones to be released in North America and it shows. These clones have the aforementioned audio and video issues, but on top of it, some games have varying degrees of delay in registering controller inputs. Since the NES and Genesis use completely different signals on their controllers, two chips are used to convert the NES controller signals used by the Gen-X and GN Twin's controllers (they're actually modified Super NES controllers) into Genesis controller signals, and they don't do a very good job. 3 Genesis games are rendered unplayable due to the system taking an entire second or so to register you've pressed something on the controller. Master System games are also unplayable as while the B and C buttons work as buttons 1 and 2, the D-pad is completely unresponsive. These issues can be aleviated by installing a second set of DB9s to use original Genesis controllers, but one shouldn't have to go through all that trouble. The systems also have an O/J region switch, with the O position (overseas) for North American Genesis carts and the J position (Japan) for Japanese MegaDrive carts. European MegaDrive carts will only work on the Gen-X and GN Twin if they're not region-locked.

Availability:

Both the Gen-X and GN Twin are readily available on eBay, though you will find the Gen-X more often than the GN Twin and at a lower price. However, there's no guarantee the latest Gen-Xes and GN Twins have the TecToy-580G as the Gen-X is now on its 3rd production run (it was discontinued twice when it was sold by Innex. Now, RetroBit took over) and the GN Twin is said to now have a TCT-6705 GOAC, which I will talk about later.

Price:

To buy either the Gen-X or GN Twin in Canada, you're looking at about $50 or so for each clone (online - I haven't found any Gen-Xes or GN Twins locally since I bought my busted-up GN Twin about 4 years ago). It will most likely be cheaper in the US.

Are the cart slot mod, and s video / stereo audio mods possible on this system?

Has anyone managed to add a region switch? Or are they fixed to the region they are bought in. For me it would be UK pal, but in really after an NTSC one!

Today i saw the Atgames Genesis Arcade motion dual at a Walgreens for an ok price(the dumb looking unit shaped like a blue sonic head with KO blue Wii controllers), went home and decided to read up on it. This is the unit with an SD card slot and full rom playability out of the box!

I was filled with neat ideas for a mod experiment. Was basically planning on checking e-bay for broken Model 1's dirt cheap, and my idea was to dissemble both and install the atgames unit into a model 1 case.

My idea was destroyed however, when i discovered the unit has no ports for an external controller! All you have is the stupid looking wireless ones that come out of the box! Assuming these were of nice quality #1- They still look damned stupid, #2- button layout isn't the greatest, and #3- Only four buttons!

Was hoping i could construct a cheap, pseudo-Everdrive KO device but alas. I don't know how the hell one could mod in controller ports of if that is even possible either.

I think the only workaround is to use AtGames' 6-button Genesis-style wireless controllers, which I believe do work on the Genesis Arcade Motion Dual. You REALLY don't want to play Genesis games with those controllers; their D-pads are TERRIBLE (WAY oversensitive), the Z button is mapped to the motion sensor in the controllers and the Y button doesn't exist. They're worthless crap.

What's also worthless crap is the emulator on the console. I've had A LOT of games play with varying degrees of graphical errors ranging from sprite priority errors (sprites overlapping things they shouldn't) to flickering lines on the left side of the screen to completely scrambled graphics. I also had Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing crash with an Address Error once (I never managed to make the game crash ever again) and Sonic 3D Blast spectacularly crashes every time you access a Special Stage. The sound is unbearable (and in Mono even though the Titan ARM core has Stereo audio output, plus, some games play their music like they're running on a PAL MegaDrive! Are you f***ing kidding me?) and the video is FULL of problems. It's excessively bright (this makes blacks show up gray), blurry as hell, straight vertical lines are jagged (WTF?!) and a lot of games have noticeable horizontal screen resolution issues. Here's and example with MegaMan: The Wily Wars - the horizontal resolution is so horribly off, text looks weird and when MegaMan moves on the screen, you can see his eyes getting thicker and thinner depending on where he is on the screen.

It's a bunch of crap that one should never even THINK of getting unless it's to encourage others not to do so. I hate AtGames' products, but I want to get them just to show people the butchered half-assed pieces of software emulated trash they are.

Back on topic, tomorrow, I will post information on the second GOAC I've had experience with, the TCT-6801.

I know they aren't the best, but they look neat and i just want to try them for myself. Especially a device like this with SD rom capability. Even If its not the best emulation, for cheap-o price and sheer freedom of Rom usage, i can accept it if the games are only 85% accurate to the original.

If only the controller issue didn't exist! This spiffy device would be pretty good. Atgames wireless pads are tough to find though. Only site i saw them on was an ebay.com.uk listing for about $60! For less i could just buy the upcoming Atgames Geniclone here and use its pads:

I have a handheld MD clone using a GOAC flavor, unsure of the manufacturing plant but its often sold under the Game Prince or PVP2 label. It has a few games built into the internal memory or can use proprietary carts that are a bit smaller than a GBA cart. The same manufacturer also makes a famiclone that is exactly the same thing, only with a different board inside.

I disassembled it and took some pictures a year or so ago when I first got it, I'll try and post pics of it tonight.

Have you or anyone else here ever taken apart an Atgames device? Would be very interested to see their inner workings. They appear to be using the same basic design for about 3-4 years now with only minor changes(some with or without cart slot, addition of wireless sensor, etc).

The power, menu button, and LED are always in the same spot leading me to believe releases all share the same PCB design.

I'd be curious if there is away to transplant controller ports onto a unit that does not have them. If they are the same device reused over and over, the areas on the PCB should still be there and functional.

I'm not aware of any GOAC with digital outs... in fact, many units using GOAC only have mono sound. If the GOAC has stereo out, it would be nice to have a list of mods for stereo out those units. An example of what I mean is the Radica - uses a GOAC, but there's only mono sound. I think it might only output mono, but I'm not sure.

I've taken mine apart. I can post pictures tonight if you like. I have the unit with an SD card slot and wireless controllers that is shaped like Sonic's head. I don't remember there being a bunch of unused solder pads for extra connectors, but it's been a while since I last looked at it and wasn't really looking for that sort of thing at the time.

As for what's in it in general: I seem to remember there being 3 main ICs on the board. One was SDRAM, a second had the part number scratched off and the third was a chip-on-board (i.e. blob of epoxy). Presumably one of those 2 unidentified chips is Flash and the other is the SoC, but I never got around to figuring out which was which.

I realize I'm replying to a rather old post, but I figure since the thread has been raised from the dead, I might as well answer a previously unanswered question.

I have a Radica games v1 machine (the blue controller model) with a busted controller cable. Just needs rewiring. Anyone interested in it as I don't want the thing. PAL/UK unit.

I'm new here and can't make new threads, that's why I am writing on this one. Sorry for bumping this old thread...

Recently started to be interested on owning a Megadrive (never had one before, only knew it via emulation) so buyed two consoles, a model 1 (va6) and a fake one just to compare and mess with it while I wait to adquire a RGB cable and mod the original one. I saw some videos and photos of these fakes and expected one of these GOAC like the SM801-A1 or the TCT-6801, but instead what I found is this blob:

I'm wondering if this is a GOAC or an emulator. The only GOAC I saw like this in pics is the Radica. The other chip seems to be the memory with the "5 in 368" games. The sound is meh, at least it's better than the Atgames handheld I have.

I tought that the "New 201x" thing on the boxes where just a bait, but seems the board is in fact dated from 2014 (look above the cartridge slot):

The front board for the controllers has some text mentioning a LED. None of the clones I saw on photos had this...

Finally, there is some contacts below the blob. I am correct if I assume these are the jumpers to change region and hz? The board doesn't have any text for them. Do you think that is possible to mod this thing to run at 60hz?

Yes, glob tops are the cool new thing nowadays. It is fashionable, cheap and compact. Did I mention Fashionable?
No idea if this thing can be modded, no idea at all what those contacts do. Glob tops do not like modders but I highly recommend you mess around with those contacts and post the results :D

Finally, there is some contacts below the blob. I am correct if I assume these are the jumpers to change region and hz? The board doesn't have any text for them. Do you think that is possible to mod this thing to run at 60hz?

That thing has an AtGames clone. It cannot be modded and it's better off used as a parts system (well not even that).

Now back to GOACs, the most promising one so far is the SM801-A1 which outputs RGB and apparently can do 32X/SMS. The TCT6035 could be better as it seems to have discrete Z80/68K bus.
