I didn't have a problem with Qui Gon, but I feel from a storytelling point of view he probably shouldn't have been in the movie, as his character is too similar to that of original Obi-Wan. Essentially you get two separate characters needlessly fulfilling the same narrow role (that of the wise hermit warrior), with neither character oozing with personality.
It would've been better to merge those characters (maybe just make Liam Neeson Obi-Wan), and create a new, non-jedi character as a secondary hero (who has normal hopes/dreams/aspirations) that people can identify with who gets killed at the end.
Jedi's simply aren't that interesting as characters, they have no real loves, dreams, hopes, or hobbies, and they're not supposed to show emotion either, its difficult to relate to characters like that, they can't really be expected to carry a movie on their own IMO.
