I didn't see a thread on this so direct me if there already is one :)

Genesis has many great shmups as we all know so what are your top 3?

My Top 3:

Thunder force 4
Truxton
Grind Stormer

What are your top 3?

From what I've played:

1. Fire Shark
2. Truxton
3. A tie b/t Bio-Hazard Battle and Trouble Shooter

I haven't play so much shmup...

1. Battle Mania Daiginjou
2. Thunder Force IV
3. Super Fantasy Zone

Thunder Force IV
Eliminate Down
Battle Mania 2/Daiginjou

1. M.U.S.H.A. - I don't care what Starmist says about it, I love this game.;p

3. Thunder Force III

Worst: Super Thunder Blade, although I love the first one on SMS.

From what I see Truxton and Thunder Force IV are favorites, but I am surprised no one mentioned Grind Stormer! It's my favorite by far... For me it's an underrated gem!

I'm not sure what my top 3 would be, but Gynoug would be one of them.

1. Burning Force.
2. Sol-Deace.
3. Some shooter I played last year and liked, can't remember the name.

Shumps are not really my genre.

I like the walky shmups.

What's a "walky" shmup?

The ones where you walk around instead of fly. I figured you could tell by looking at the list.

Not necessarily in that order. Actually, no, that's probably about right.

Honorable mentions go to Bio-Hazard Battle, Fire Shark and Twinkle Tale. There's still a fair amount of shmups I've yet to experience for more than a few minutes, though.

I often wonder what an R Type game on Genesis would have been like. TG-16 and SNES had them and too bad Genesis missed out.

Yea to anyone posting Run N' Gun games (Contra, Gunstar Heroes, etc.) This is for Shmups (Truxton, MUSHA, Sol-Deace, etc.)

It's not quite the same, but at least you can play the SMS version on Genesis with a PBC. Not as good as some other versions, but still very good, especially for the hardware.

GaiaRes--All around well balanced and very fun shooter.
Bio-Hazard Battle--addicting as all hell
Lightening Force--Cool game

Twinkle Tale is technically an over head run and gun, like Mercs for example, with the only shmup elements coming into play at the boss battles.

Elemental Master and Undead Line are both pure shmups though because of the forced scroll, despite the 'walky' themes. Panorama Cotton is a rail shooter.:)

Or at least that's how they'd be classified over at shooting game HQ shmups.com. Hennyway, my top three is undersided until I play the rest of the stuff I missed out on years ago, but one pleasant surprise was Gaiares, at the time confined to NTSC territories, wheres mediocre shooters like Arrow Flash made it to PAL instead. Great, deep hori with buckets of strategy that plays a bit like a cross between Gradius and R-Type, but without the 'space cow' syndrome that afflicts the aforementioned games (you can control your speed using a button from the get go ala TF, Aleste etc.

I can make it to the end of stage 5/1 credit but that's where the difficulty starts to show it's teeth a bit:cool:
