On my Sega Genesis Model 1 Non-HDG (but thankfully not VA7) I never noticed rainbow banding but all of the sudden I switched tv's and now I notice some. It shows up a lot on black screens. Like I said this never happened before and btw I am using composite cables (yellow and white) and NOT RF. Is there a way to fix this?

Sorry these pictures were taken from my iPad and are kind of hard to see but the rainbow banding is noticeable nonetheless. Thank you!
Not really unless you output the RGB and transcode it to s-video or component. Rainbow banding has been noticeable on my model 1 pretty much since I started playing it on a color TV which was probably 1991 or so.

The 32x weakens the rainbow. I'm pretty sure that in any s-video from the system whether it's encoded internally or externally you'll still get a certain degree of the skittles effect. The only non rainbow image I got from a genesis on a capture device is component video.

The good news is the s-video from the 32x you don't really see any rainbow on my tv. And yes my tv's s-video is very sharp. If you want the best s-video possible I think the s-video from the 32x is king.
However, 32x does not improve RGB for obvious reasons. It's the native video form rendered by Genesis.Quote:

You don't need to mod a 32X. You can just line out and convert/transcode RGB into s-video, or component or use a device like the XMD-3 to output s-video.Quote:

That is something you will see on a solid color screen, particularly white and black screens, and the lines are stationary. Sometimes, new capacitors can eliminate rainbow banding, but they will not eliminate fringing. That's an inherent problem with encoding RGB video all the way down to Composite. The only way around it is to use pure RGB, RGB converted to Component or S-Video externally, or mod the system for internal S-Video (I've had a lot of problems with vertical lines from the color subcarrier when modifying a Genesis Model 1 for S-Video, and putting a resistor on Chroma like I've seen Drakon and a few others do just gives me S-Video that's worse than Composite. I'm not kidding). Ideally, if your TV can take 15KHz RGB, get yourself an RGB cable for the Genesis. If not, get yourself an RGB to Component converter if your TV supports Component video at 240p, or you could also go with an RGB to HDMI converter if you have a TV with HDMI inputs.
My 32X on composite has NONE of those effects. Perfectly clean picture, no rain bowing OR fringing.
It's confirmed that that subcarrier cause jailbars in genesis rgb out. So for best rgb transcoder for s-video you need to disable subcarrier pin by liftin one resistor of from motherboard. This way genesis outputs crystal clear rgb and you can use your external s-video transcoder with full quality even better than 32x. Naturally 32x image should be better also via lifting the subcarrier on genesis encoder.
If I'm not mistaken the 32x uses the RGB output from the Genesis, and has it's own (better) encoder to output it to the screen. This would explain why it cleans up the video so well.

Even without the colour subcarrier lifted there's barely any interference. Still lifting the subcarrier isn't too hard, it just disables colour in s-video, composite, and rf.

Sweetspot capture card can take rgsb directly to awoid to component transcoder. You can get best rgb capture with it. Dragons picture seems horrible with component transcoder... Donno why but looks like that.
Yeah I set the capture device to over-exposure. The picture is flawless.
