I am very angry. because in China, a lot of people play the playstation version。playsation version very bad，SEGA-SATURN version is complete
The Playstation version isn't bad. The Saturn version from the graphical and technical stand point is the worse version in this case. The Saturn versions resolution is stretched so things look distorted, it has more slowdown, botched transparences and lighting, and more loading segements, as well as a few messed up bits (Lower part of the Chapel area still uses the tower background).
While the Saturn version does have more content, it's not as good of a port as it could have been, and I can completely understand someone wanting to play the PS1 version instead.

I said the Saturn version had more content. However Maria and Richter feel like tacked on bonus modes. While the Saturn controller is nice, I don't see the PS1 controller being a hindrance in this case as SotN is more of a platformer than an action game. For Shooters, Fighters, Action games, etc. you're right the Saturn controller is preferred, but for a slow platformer like SotN I don't see it making much of a difference.

SotN is a kickass game. It's one of my all-time favorite games. Here in the States, the vast majority was only exposed to the U.S. PS1 version, so, while there was indeed more content in the JP Saturn version, it never really felt like we missed-out on much when playing it. The PS1 game is outstanding still (even with the funky voice-overs).
P.S.> While SotN was a true pioneer by perfecting the art of side-scrolling action RPG, I'd still put any of the three DS games above it. The DS games, though on a handheld, feel a lot more refined to me, and in increasing order chronologically.
I play the Playstation version using the analog stick.
The Saturn version does have the major gameplay improvements of an extra hand to equip items and the ability to run through the second castle, which saves more time than is lost to minor slowdown and longer load times. Most people care more about the graphics though,which is nice in both versions. The 360/PS3 would be the best version to play on modern TVs if you prefer the PSX version.
Saturn version stretches the game with the higher resolution and loads the bosses as the door opens, despite there being a blank room before bosses to mask the loading. Oops!
Yeah, they didn't even try to optimize the Saturn version. I'm surprised they added the extra playable character with how sloppy they were. They don't even use the load rooms to load, so you still have to walk through the room and then wait for it to load.
Also, when I bought the Saturn version I also owned the PS1 version. On both my PS1 and my roommate's launch model the graphics were significantly murkier than on my Saturn over Composite or S-Video. My current later model PS1 and PS2 don't seem to have this problem.
PS1 is just poor hardware, simply prone to outputting faeces onto your display no matter how good the software is. Saturn is expensive, PS1 is cheap junk.

Got bored of this one, completed it but really prefer the action orientated pre symphony titles.
However I did have the Saturn ver. maybe my experience was tainted?

You can play as Richter in the PS1 game. After you beat the game enter his name into a new game slot. You can also enter AXEARMOR (AXE ARMOR?) for a cool extra in your inventory.
I wouldn't mind revisiting the whole game myself with Richter.
If I remember correctly, I think I may have been careful enough to beat it with all four endings (or was it just three out of four I got?).
This game was also released for the XBOX 360 on the compilation disc titled "Konami Classics Collection - Volume 1". i am curious to know how this version compares to their older counterparts :?:
I know of one version in which they re-made the English voice-overs with much better acting. I can't be sure if that's part of that copy.
That's the PSP version included in Dracula X Chronicles.
I played the Saturn version first and I have barely played the PSx version so the flaws don't come off as big to me as they would to some other folks. But I do think Konami could've done a better job than what they did do. Look at how beautiful Taromaru turned out.
Does the PSP version have the extra's from the Saturn port?

I have both the PS1 and Saturn versions (and PSP). I prefer the PS1 version, despite not having Maria or the two extra areas.
PS1 pros:
-nicer graphical effects
-better resolution (no stretching like the Saturn one has)
-you don't have to go through the menu screen and wait for loading just to see the map
These three things, especially the last two, make the PS1 version my preferred version between the two. However, I do enjoy the Saturn one and have played through it a couple of times.
PSP version is best (it's NOT a straight port of the PS1 version).
SotN is probably my favourite game ever.
I own the XBLA version of it, which is the same thing. It's just a port of the PS1 version sans the FMVs.Quote:

XBLA one does have some audio glitches from what I remember. The red skeletons come to mind.

SOTN is still IMO the best Castlevania game. Has everything going for it (gameplay, music, design, art, etc.). Now the later Metroidvania games I found them to be cookie cutters to be honest.
I thought Circle of the Moon was outstanding. I think the response to that game was a little muted because it was hard to see on the original shitty GBA screen.Quote:

Yeah Circle of the Moon is awesome, definitely my second favorite Metroidvania (after SoTN, obviously). It was the first GBA game I bought, too. I stupidly got rid of it at some point, and I really need to pick up another copy. Bet it would look super slick on my Game Boy Micro. I only ever played it on the original model GBA.
The card system is great fun.
