Your Ultimate Sonic Game

In is thread I would like to see everyone's favorite Sonic game on the Genesis. Seems simple enough however there are many combinations to be done with Sonic and Knuckles "Lock-On" technology. My favorite would have to be Sonic 2 and Knuckles (Sonic 2 locked on to Sonic and Knuckles). The reason I made this thread is because I know many are fans of Sonic 3 and Knuckles and wondered really why Sonic 2 and knuckles was overshadowed by this. I guess it's all personal preference but I hope I'm not the only one who finds Sonic 2 and Knuckles the best Sonic game for Genesis. Hell, I spent 3 hours playing it today! (I'm sick and had a lot of free time)

So what Sonic game or Sonic "Combo" is your favorite?

The best and definitive 2D Sonic title....was never on the Genesis.

Sonic 2. It has the best flow to me. Sonic 3/K are too long and complex, although still good, which ends up taking away the arcade-feel SEGA is known for (for me, anyway). Sonic CD is the same way. Like 3/K it is good, but the time travel breaks up the flow. Sonic 1 would be my choice if not for the fact that Sonic 2 was longer with better art, music, characters (Tails, Silver Sonic), and 2-player (CO-OP and racing).

The fact that CD and 3/K need saving basically sums up my issue with them. I like to be able to beat my game ideally in one sitting.

I guess I should mention that Sonic 1 8-bit is also very good, but still behind Sonic 2 on Genesis.

Sonics 1 & 2 were different beasts to Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

My ulitmate Sonic game is Sonic 2, simple, speedy perfection with attitude.

Sonic 3 as a stand alone game is cumbersome tosh.

I am undecided, I wouldn't say Sonic CD, because of its level design too amateurish.
Sonic 2 is the best on paper, but I find the challenge of the bosses too low (save for Metropolis' and Death Egg's). The Special Stages are awesome.
I love Sonic 3 & K, so full of minigames and awesome level designs...great boss battles too (still a bit too easy though)

It's a tough choice. Maybe the best is Sonic 2, but by a notch.

(PS: Am I the only one spoiled by Super Sonic? )

Sonic 2, for sure. I like playing as Knuckles occasionally, but I'll usually just hit up the vanilla game.

I would have loved to see Sonic 2 completed. I'm sorry but crappy fanhacks like Lost Worlds don't cut it for me.

But of the existing games, I'd say Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

Sonic CD for me.

In order of good-best:

Sonic 3D
Sonic 2
Sonic 1
Sonic CD
Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

I don't think I've played every Sonic game... but I say Sonic 2. The best part was the split-screen Vs mode. I played the heck out of that with friends and family. I wish they had made that available for every level, or even make a new game with just that concept. I was happy when I found out Sonic 3 had a similar thing, but then disappointed when I found out it was specially constructed levels, rather than game levels.

S3K for me. I used to be a big Sonic 2 mark since it was my first Genesis game until I played S3K. Plenty of levels, varying difficulty between Sonic/Tails and Knuckles, better special stages, actual bonus rounds, save function, nifty in-game cutscenes, and don't even get me started on the shields. When I was a kid, Sonic 2 seemed like a really big game. However, after playing through it time from time the zones became easier to run through and as a result, started to seem a bit too short (maybe because I've gotten older :p). Anyone else feel this way? Aquatic Ruin seemed like a gargantuan level when I was a kid and I absolutely despised falling in the water. Now the zone seems too small.

S3K
SCD
S2
S1
Chaotix

Sonic CD and Sonic 2 are a toss-up but I probably prefer Sonic CD because I've played Sonic 2 to death. That and because Sonic CD is just a tad more difficult.

You could try Sonic 2 Long Version. There's also a Knuckles version as well. It's better than the Lost Worlds hack and has all of the levels.

In comparison, S3K's 2-player mode is a disappointment to Sonic 2's 2-player mode. I agree that Sonic 2 has the best 2-player mode.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is still the grandest 2D platforming epic of the 16-bit era to me.

Sonic 2 comes next but it's not quite as polished as the last game.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog comes after 2 but honestly it's pretty close. It was really genre defining and I've grown to have more respect for it lately as I've played through it again.

I really don't like Sonic CD at all. I only really watched a friend play it back in its day and didn't play it myself until around 2005 so I have no nostalgia for it. I found it to have really awkward level design and a disappointing final boss. Despite the CD media bells and whistles it always came across as a sort of half-finished concept to me with gimmicks that didn't really work with the Sonic franchise. Level exploration works for a lot of 2D platformers but for Sonic it just felt odd.

Sonic 3D Blast is a game I barely consider part of the same family, along with Spinball (which I admit is a guilty pleasure of mine). I haven't spent enough time with Knuckles Chaotix to really comment about it but it never really hooked me enough to want to play through it seriously.

The funny thing is I actually like that game. It doesn't deserve the title of the best however.

I also agree, I've always wondered if that was one of the parts of S3&K that was rushed

I've had the most fun with Sonic CD, Sonic 3&K plays better but can feel a bit slow in places. The first two are decent enough but I never owned them as a kid so I don't have the memories
