Video games not worth the expensive price tag

Self explanatory.

I have to go with the following:

Blast Wind: Sure it's technosoft, but that doesn't mean every shooter they produce has to be a gem. Blast Wind is decent, but not mind blowing as its price tag ($150). Graphics are kinda bland for a 32 bit game, and its way too short and easy.

Burning Rangers: Call me crazy, but I find many 3D Saturn games don't age so well. Burning Rangers is one of those games. The game is too short, features decent if repetitive game play, and has graphic errors all over the place (clipping, transparencies not blending well with other transparency effects). Also, the camera pisses me off, because when you are trying to get out of a heated situation, you can't tell where its safe to land. Also, they went way overboard with the fire bursts when the counter reaches 100% (Stop already!). Yeah, not worth the 100 dollar price tag. Get the Jap version instead, like me.

Earthbound: What's so great about this game? Sure its decent but why do people go crazy over this? $150 for the cart alone? Earthbound has bland graphics, unappealing characters, unmemorable music, and yeah, the battles are kinda boring. I bought mines long ago, and sold right away.

Run Saber: fucker was only $27 total when I got it cib this year and for whatever reason, it's now around $100.

Hagane: WAS a cheap game, then some fart on the net claim it to be a Blockbuster only and now, EMERGERD, HERGERND!

I'll second Earthbound totally, I can't understand why that game costs so much when there were like 500k copies made or something from what I've heard.

I'm sure Buster Douglas Boxing for the SMS is not worth it's 3 digit price tag, and Flinstones 2 and Action 53 for the NES have gameplay value nowhere near their high prices.


Inversely though, Little Samson is supposed to be very very good and worth the money, and I think that Panzer Dragoon Saga is worth what it costs (though if it continues to rise I'm not sure if that will still be true).

There are many factors which influence a game's price. Hype and percieved rarity are just as much a factor as actual low print runs and extraordinary gameplay.

In the case of Blast Wind, akaik it is universally agreed upon that the game isn't phenomenal by any means. Its value to me comes largely from the fact that I have a great interest and appreciation for Techno Soft designs. There are plenty of "more awesome" shmups out there, but I still do greatly enjoy what Blast Wind offers in the way of graphics, sound, story, and the neat branching path mechanic. I could say that Blast Wind on its own as a Saturn shmup is worth $60-80, the recent infllation to $150 isn't neccesarily justified by gameplay but for those who want a complete library of Techno Soft shmups, Blast Wind can not be missed and it certainly did not get a large print run. In that regard $150 isn't unjustified.

Thirding Earthbound. Saving the world from mutant ovaries or something.

I'll probably get shot for saying this, but Wily Wars.

Not a big fan of the classic Mega Man titles. Wily Wars didn't change my mind.

I'll add Tales of Destiny as well. This was a early Tales game, and it's fighting system is based around the crap 2D version of the Linear Motion Battle System. The gameplay wasn't really all that great until Tales of Symphonia.

Yeah, Blast Wind is lost gem in a way. By the way do you think $100 for Image Fight/X-Multiply (Saturn) is justified. It recently caught my attention and someone is offering it to me for that price.

As for the thread, most overpriced games aren't worth the price tag for playing...

X-multiply is one of my all time favorites. It just has the edge that only Irem could provide. Music and graphics are fantastic imo, and the tentacle arm weapon/shield is a cool play mechanic - at the same time the game holds some strong 8 or16-bit conventions which may be both a charm and frustration. Both games require memorization to beat and can be impossible to get back on your feet if you die once....so you might be put off after spending $100, of course you can always resell it without really losing anything. Luckily I got my Saturn copy for $70 when the going price was $100-130. Image Fight is awesome in an 8-bit way, but it kicks my ass far too much.

Seriously? I didn't think there was a following for this game. I like it but it's a poor man's Strider in pastel. I was expecting to re-aquire it for super cheap some time.

Marvel vs Capcom on PS2 when everyone acknowledges its not a great port and inferior to the Dreamcast version.

Im stunned its so expensive. It was an highly popular and highly promoted game back in the day so its not like its rare or even a "forgotten classic."

Probably Super Tempo. It's one of the prettiest 2D games on Saturn and somewhat enjoyable but I resold my copy for about the same price I paid for it initially because it didn't really live up to my expectations. Same with Tryrush Deppy.

Final Fantasy VII, even at $5 for a PS1 plus whatever FFVII goes for today it doesn't have an ending, its dialog is meaningless, and the midi music is flat.
