America’s first cartoon family comes to the Genesis courtesy of Taito, in all their prehistoric glory. As licensed platformers go, it’s certainly not the best, but there are far worse games to spend your hard-earned clams on. Our only question is: why can’t we use Barney Rubble? An accurate, temperate review. Normally I'm not on the side of temperance but as with so many of the platformers left at this day there's not a great deal of reason to tilt the compass. Nonetheless I certainly would've bitched about that ledge grab control more. Also I found it just that extra bit tacky they insisted on TMing "yabba dabba doo" in the story text. Anyhow it bears a decent bit of play variety and is essentially sound but the faults are as appraised by the reviewer so the 4-5 range is right for this game (I'd've scored it 6 had it less annoying music) and since the score matches the text there's no complaint to be raised.

It's pretty average and platformers are a dime a dozen on the Genesis but I'd probably give it a 6-7. There are some things about it I hate (short attack range), a few cheap deaths, but overall it's a well balanced and relatively fun game. It is too bad they didn't take some more time on it and add about 3-4 more levels.
Average stuff.....but good for initial play. I don't see myself touching this once beaten.

I'd give it a good 7 or 8 myself. For something based on what would have been a 30 year old cartoon sitcom, the gameplay is pretty solid. If brevity were an issue, then World of Illusion wouldn't deserve it's 8. This one's final boss will at least challenge you some. Also, the ledge control wasn't that bad, it's the situations you're put in that maybe aren't the best for the rate at which Fred climbs, but it's still manageable. The worst spot, to me, was the one rock in the lifting lava, but that required taking note of the geometry of the surroundings, and jumping at the right time.
Also, whatever advantage any other game with this license is supposed to have over this one, I don't care. Shark surfing! In stage 1! Very few gaming moments as a whole are ever going to top that.
Edit: For the record, recognizing it's flaws are why I wouldn't put it near 9, but it's a better game than something based on a license generally has a right to be.
What the hell is up with the Castle of Illusion witch boss at the end of the game?

Now this is a game I've had to play again to review it. Well, just an average platformer, like many people say, not better nor worse than others on the system. I like the Wonderboy-like disposition of the levels (with those signs marked 1-4 to access the checkpoints) and the colorful graphics. However, the BGM, while having a couple of nice tunes, is generally terrible, and the difficulty is uneven: one can zoom across a level only to find a short, teeny weeny part that turns it into a true act of penance.
Not bad nor good. That's about it.
Is this confirmed to be developed by Santos? I've been warming up to their efforts lately...
Having just beaten this one (on Normal, then Hard), I agree with the original review, StarMist, et al. I'm surprised no one mentioned the appalling amount of slowdown in the game, which really shouldn't be happening and is downright SNES-esque.
There are flashes of creativity in the Flintstones -- I actually like some of the boss battles, and I appreciate the fact that Hard mode doesn't make the enemies take more hits. But the designers gave in one too many times to the temptation to be dicks, with a few bottlenecks in the game where there's no room to recover from a minor error.
In particular, there's no reason that segment with the lava platform should be as unforgiving as it is. The Prince of Persia-style edge grabbing that follows is one thing, but I actually think the first jump is what really sucks, as your window to make it is well under a second and the camera is uncooperative, leaving the platform offscreen for way too long. It's not that it's impossible, but that getting it right is a matter of memorizing the right timing through trial and error, and not anything more intuitive or skillful.
Anyway, a mediocre-to-OK game that could've been very good with more TLC. And yeah, the trademark symbols embedded in the dialogue are tacky as hell. Probably forced upon them by Hanna-Barbera, though.
Having just replayed and beaten this one, I'm baffled at the score. It's an easy 7,5, way above average. The graphics are nice, the music is perfectly fine, the variety is decent. I didn't find any slowdowns in it at all (playing on my PAL Mega Drive here) and the ledge grab controls only caused me trouble in Stage 5 - or rather the timing for when I should jump caused me trouble in Stage 5, but the ledge grab itself worked perfectly fine (Just hold up and press C again mid-jump when under a ledge).
Does anyone has a more precise idea of what happened between Sega, Taito and the European market in the passage from Master System to Megadrive?
Heck, on Master System Taito has (either in-house or outsourced/licensed) a good dozen titles, and not a single one stayed out of Europe. In fact, many are among the most common cartridges and absolute staples in most collections (Bubble Bobble, Rastan, Op Wolf).
Switching to the 16 bit era, Taito has some eighteen cartridges on Genny/MD, and just TWO of them were marketed in Europe (James Douglas and The Flinstones, ie the ones with a license attached). What the heck?!?
