How many people here are on dial up?

I upgraded a computer this year for someone, and it had this "Pinball" Modem in it.

Me neither. That's why I kept it... keep it in my collection of oddities at work.

All photos in this thread must be 56k friendly!
-
-
I know my modems never got to speeds that high, unless 56K was actually 56 Kilobits, then that would make more sense.
-
It's kilobits, internet speeds are always in bits.
-
I still find that horribly annoying... Measuring speeds in bits is just like cartridges, only done to make the speeds sound bigger than they really are.
But if you're on limited bandwidth, your downloads and files are measured in bytes, so if you're not aware, you could confuse your internet speeds with bytes and end up going over your limit...
Smells of crap I tell you...
-
It is crap, it's all crap!

The consumer is never going to know the difference, but I have a thing for standards so kilobits are okay by me.

I only ever got 31k out my connection

This reminds me of my old Windows 95 computer which had a problem caused by a shorted CD-ROM drive which took out my 14.4 modem. Fortunately I had a backup, another "14.4" modem I had found in the garbage. I do not know what that thing was, but it wasn't 14.4. It was labelled as such on the card and the box, and even after the driver was installed... but it connected AND transferred data at ISDN speed: 128kbps.

I think I only ever averaged 21kbps, damn your Eastern European post war infrastructure!

What is with those cheap ass 56k modems lacking a transformer? That's stupid on so many levels. Ugh! It's like they wanted it to be disposable.
Anyway, I only ever had a 2400 baud modem till 98, then went to cable internet since.
-
I've got a few of them in a box somewhere.

This is the modem I used until like 8 or 7 years ago:

Very nice modem, it gave me speeds of up to 8-9 kB/s (using compression I assume since that's more than 56kbps). It also was able to survive an incoming call with the call waiting feature enabled, any other modem would drop the connection under those circumstances but this one would keep connected until the caller hanged up. Really nice machine.
Regards.

If i ever have to get dial up, that's the kind of modem i'll want to have!

This is the same one I had about 10 years ago:

I had to uninstall it 1 year ago because its caps went bad and it was starting to output garbage.
Not only that but also the last dial-up server here died almost 2 years ago.
I remember the maximum I had (which fortunately was almost always) was 52Kbit/s. Pretty close to 56Kbit/s, I must say.
I used dial-up as late as September 2008,though.

How can a modem so new already have bad caps?
Terrible, and these companies should be shameful..

It was the time of the capacitor plague, so it's pretty easy to have this problem.
