Its still better than the off topic sections of other boards where all they do is talk fantasy football 24-7.
Other boards I frequent have mostly just died... Forum usage across the web seems to be on the decline.
We need more secret Santa-esque events..l stuff members can get involved in.
I have a Facebook, but a find myself logging in less and less... The only reason I still use it is because it's the only convenient means to talk to some of my friends, and because I use it to notify people for invitations, band practice schedules, etc. I completely ignore all the useless games and other stuff on there. I don't even make status updates as often as I used to.
Message boards are still doing better than chat rooms. I'd say Facebook/texting killed off chat rooms more than forums. I remember 10 years ago AOL had tons of active chat rooms going and now there's nothing left.
Having a chat room isnt worth the extra cost. Chat rooms like I said are dead and it wouldnt be too active.
I got many means of IM if there's a need for chat
Even I can't think of think of things that are thread worthy anymore.
I think instead of repeatedly habitually pleasuring ourselves with self assertive opinion statements and menial arguments we should make an effort to document the games and other game related products we enjoy at this point in our silly little lives.
I never run out of stupid shit to say. :p
Good for you! Fuck facebook, I hate that garbage. This entire trend of social media has gone beyond annoying and is becoming unsettling. I swear it's making people dumber. Texting and walking/driving accidents aside, it's really starting to feel like people are losing the ability to communicate properly in real life. Even the accuracy of answering emails has gone downhill...
Facebook and the onset of Cell Phone texting has pretty much killed internet forums and chatrooms. As someone who frequents both, it kind of disappoints me, because Facebook is highly sterile compared to internet forums. No worthwhile talk and it's usually just bullshit like people complaining about their life or dumb posts about politics that are not thought out at all, or just a bunch of different pictures.
I agree that we've evolved into this society on the internet where people don't even talk coherently anymore. It kind of sucks.
I only use Facebook to keep in touch with old friends. Other than that, phone calls or face to face. With the occasional email. :p
Well its ruined going to concerts for sure. People either hold their phones up to get their lousy looking video and if they arent doing that then they are looking down at their phones. No one is into the show anymore. I hate going to shows now. Ive read that someone brought their ipad to a show. If you go to a fucking rock or metal concert and someone's holding an ipad you should have permission to knock it out of their hands.:)
Give humanity technology and it proves how mundane its existence can be.
That said, I want robots to service me.
If American society in particular becomes less interested in "shows" than it has been for my entire life I would consider it a blessing.
This threads basically a +1 postcount topic :P
It seems like the entire internet is no longer what it used to be. Remember when everybody had a Geocities? Those were the good old days. :p
blogspot took it's place :D
That's my piss peeve about cell phones more than anything else. People thinking their dumb ass text "conversations" supersede the importance of any real-life event occurring around them. Concerts, driving, working, walking, or even talking to someone in person. Get a text, and you GOTTA read it right away and send text back, the rest of the world can wait for "LOL, ya, totally". :?
I walk into Chick-Fil-A the other week and see these two jackasses apparently having lunch, neither were touching their food or acknowledging their surroundings or each other, they were thumbing away at their phones. I couldn't help but comment on how stupid it looked, and I only hope they heard me.
I was hoping this thread indicated the crappy +1 post threads were dying.
I miss geocities as well. Web rings kicked ass. Now everything is just shopping carts and suck. (present site excluded)
I find facebook and texting so impersonal. I hate consistently communicating with anyone that way, and it's no wonder that I've simply lost touch with many people that I used to share meaningful time with. I really don't see it as a suitable substitute for time spent together or a conversation over a phone, but what really irks me is that many people do. I'm not one to beg, which makes me someone that won't indulge the whole "my life is busy now, so this will have to do" aspect of texting and facebook. I require more than that in anyone I'd call a friend.
Plus, my sense of humor almost never makes an accurate translation to text, and I never assume that people are going to really care about what I ate for breakfast, even if I display a delicious looking picture.
It's not just Facebook, it's also Twitter, and sites like Reddit.
Which sucks. I use all of these things, and they're okay, but they're not the same. I make the occasional comment on Reddit, but you can't really have a discussion. The other two are not open forums, just sharing things with your friends.
The Internet does seem to be saturated with the same old crap: wikipedia, facebook, twitter, etc. It might just be me, but it's difficult to find awesome sites (such as Sega-16) on the net these days. Even Google searches aren't the same: back in the day it would search for exactly what you typed in based upon page content, now Google searches for what it suggests I was searching for and brings up wikipeida as number 1. Ban the Internet.
This topic has reminded me to archive the older websites in my bookmarks because quite a few have gone down for good. Perhaps we should do a thread where we dump links to vintage websites.
Archive.org is good as a last resort, but it doesn't archive images and the layout is often messed up.
Thankfully, a site such as Sega-16 exists .
no worries i will have plenty to contribute over the next 6 months
