Is TMNT for the NES really as bad as I think?

First of all, here's my gamefaqs review:

I'd say yes. Even in 2009, I tried to give the game another shot, even as an adult it still was a frustrating,unbearable pile of shit. I figured after 20 years since I played it, I would improve with time. I was wrong, the game nearly brought out my irritated 7 year old self.

The ending is utterly pathetic. "Splinter Turns into a human" What the hell is this shit?

What does everyone else think? And why the hell is this game getting such average Metacritic ratings?

It's too damn unforgiving and broken for me to even consider it mediocre. Now the Arcade port. Yeah, I consider that mediocre.

It is not. TMNT is truly annoying and has some of the most sluggish controls and bad hit detection ever to grace a game. I'm pretty sure your saying that just to be trolling. What I posted in my review about the game's controls is FACT. Pure and simple.

I dare YOU to play it without getting Game Over once, without cheating.

The control's not sluggish. The turtles react as soon as a button's pressed nor is their animation overlong. The jumps can feel floaty because they're very high and the turtles can be manipulated whilst in air, making oversteering a liability, but with familiarity it all works well.
Absolutely nothing is wrong with the hit detection. It may be possible to be die on an instant-kill spike by touching its side, I don't recall any that aren't in pits unapproachable except by falling, but even so that would be standard for older games.
Far from its controls being amongst the worst there are well regarded games with worse hit detection, eg The Lion King. Read its review thread here, in addition to the complaints it receives there's a user who beat and liked the game yet mentions adult Simba's swipes extend beyond their animation. Plus lv 2 is infamous.
Raphael's and Mike's weapons are far from useless. Mike covers mid range front attacks as well as anybody save Don (who's best all round) and Raphael has the fastest weapon speed making him ideal for flocking and tiny enemies.
The statement that Leo's and Don's attack range is limited is beyond absurd: both can attack upwards and downwards through floors, meaning they can safely hide under or atop platforms and essentially snipe enemies. Don's frontal range is also immense, his staff extends straight forward, it's practically Strider's sword.

You also posted simply wrong "FACTS" about other aspects of the game than its controls, such as the early statement the game was undermarketed. It sold massively.

This dare makes no sense: how can anybody get Game Over more than once in a game w/o continues?
And I've beaten it.

I wouldn't say it's that bad, it has some redeeming factors.
But compared to the other 3 TMNT games on NES it falls short.

The layout and overall design of the game is quite frustrating, but that doesn't mean it's all out bad :)

I don't know why this game gets such a bad rep, it's a tough game, but it's nowhere near as broken as people like to make out, there's plenty worse.

Why does every piece of subjective criticism you have about a video game, review or post, read like an F- grade AVGN script. You've written five lines of text that say absolutely nothing other than negative platitudes. I was with you till you bashed the Arcade game. The original NES TMNT despite its awesome music, and neat graphics, is one of those harsh titles. Partly due to artificial difficulty from clumsy game design.

It is still fun to play on occasion but after the first couple of stages, things get redicuolus and its time to stop.

The Arcade game however? Thats a stellar title and memorable beat'em up on the NES. Impressive for the hardware too.

Probably two reasons:

1. It's not the arcade game

2. AVGN reviewed it, therefore it must suck.

I remember playing this one for the Spectrum. Don't remember getting all that far - think I might have got past the dam once or twice.

You sir, are a crack smoker. I got this game new when it came out BITD. The graphics were actually good and up to standard for the system and relative to other good games on the system.

The music and sound FX in the game are great. Music is memorable and still holds up today. Sound FX are definitely above average (even better than some Genesis games).

The controls are fine. I never had a problem with the controls BITD or now. A couple of parts have some bullshit jumps, but that's normal for that era and is part of the level design - not controls.

The game is hard, I'll give you that. But it's not hard because it's broken. You basically just wrote a hater review. I bet you think you're proud of yourself. You need to get over whatever grudge you have for this game and move on (and get off AVGN's tip).
