To be honest, from my point of view and many others who don't analyse such in depth it seems pretty successful.
Forbes:Nintendo Wii U Consoles Sold Out, Already Selling For Over $500 On Ebay

IHS Screen Digest forecasts Wii U sales of 3.5 million consoles this year (which would be ahead of the 3.1 million Wii had in 2006). But over the first four years, the research firm predicts Nintendo will sell 56.7 million Wii Us, down from the 79 million Wiis the company sold in that same time period. But these are solid numbers.
The Nintendo Wii U has launched in America without the much-vaunted TVii service, but is still expected to sell out worldwide.

And they are selling like hotcakes on Ebay. I've seen ten listings in two days so far and they have all gone above $500 USD! I saw one sold for $625!!
and in this economy... Well it is christmas, consumerism time!! :) (which can be a good thing on the receiving end... :) )
I am not like a die hard nintendo user, I didn't enjoy the snes much (except for Actraiser!! :) and bomberman) and the N64 I have with all the awesome games (bought in 2007) really is a collecting thing i suppose, but I hope, like for all gaming franchises that they are successful.
I love the forward thinking and think its so important to have choice in gaming, when Sega bit the dust well, I can only wonder what the iteration of sega in todays age would be. Would have been awesome, considering how they always one up the other, who knows, maybe sega might have tried to out nintendo the nintendo (that would have been sooooo interesting) by a philosophy change, maybe not. But a sega hybrid console would have been awesome!!! maybe a gamegear that detaches from a 2012 sega console!! with Wii U like innovations!! wireless gaming from home player vs a game gear player on the net around the block? lol
