Mystic Defender......conquered once again!
Once I went through the trial and error of the game, I breezed through it in about 20-25 minutes without losing a continue, on the max difficulty of "Normal". Par for the course for early Genesis platformers. Solid game with great graphics and music for 1989. For some reason I closely associate it with "Shadow Blasters", which came out a year later yet features similar projectile-throwing action. This is the second time I've played both through back-to-back.
Alright. I'll take you up on Ariel when I do Spiderman. Put that in green for me.
Yeah, that is the best part of the entire game :D.
Couldn't sleep last nite, so I went up and did this:

Heads up: I am working on Shove It! The Warehouse game. It's coming along nicely.
After a mediocre first showing, I came back and conquered S&K with a vengeance. All emeralds with Sonic by Flying Battery Act 2, Knuckles by Sandopolis Act 1. I think this is the first time I've ever fully beaten S&K standalone, as I almost immediately locked-in with my S3 cart when I got this game 17 years ago this month. Knuckles' quest is so short its almost offensive. To think that this was Sega's direct competition against DKC for the '94 holiday season....Genesis gamers likely had to pay upwards of $110-$120 to acquire S3&K back then.
As far as what sports game I'm burdene-, eh, have to choose, I'll get back to you on that Mr. "Sorry Nothing". :p
^Nice one. BTW most of your attachments aren't showing up (in this and the other post) -- all but the last one just show up as "Attachment 7197" etc. I think the fix is to reattach them and/or redo them as IMG tags (after copying the URL), making sure they're also appended to the end of the post. Kludgy, but it works.
Heh. Better that than "Super Boy", I suppose. :D
The good news is that we're under 100 sports titles left; the bad news is that we're only under by two (there are 98 left), though we're still near our 25% sports completion rate target (around 22% IIRC). I wish I could offer suggestions, but I don't know the library beyond a bare few titles; I've mostly been working on tennis games and the RBI Baseball series, myself.
Also, Last Battle is available if you want to take the reins as your namesake.
I'll never understand DKC's popularity. I played DKC at a friend's house back in the day and thought "what the hell is supposed to be special about this?" I played it more recently and thought the exact same thing. It sure can't stack up to S&K for me, even by itself.
Regarding the Genesis's Sokoban port (Shove it): I looked up the number of levels and good god, there are 160. I was just stuck on level 66 or something for at least an hour. Woof.
For everyone not living in the Netherlands today is de last day of the 'vierdaagse' (Four Days March), It's the largest walking event in the world.
Over 40.000 walkers have walked for 4 days 30/40 or 50 km.
I walked also a lot this week, but that was more at the 'vierdaagse'-Party's ;)
Today I walked the path of Crack down on my Mega drive.
If i'm correct Crack down is one of the more earlier titles on the Mega drive. (They also released a Mega Tech version) And it doesn't aged well.
In an nut shell: Evil Doctor wants to take over the world....blabla..two heroes need to stop him....etc. The game has 4 stages which have 4 acts each.
Your mission: Place your bombs on the right spots and get the hell out before the timer runs out.
First thing you will notice is that the gameplay only takes place in the lower half off the screen. The left side for Player one, the right for player 2.
This gives the players the possibility to explore the level separate from each other. In a 1 player game, the player 2 screen is used to give a description of the enemies.
The upper half is used to give you a map, with the locations where you have to plant your bombs, a timer and your amount of ammo for you pistol, cannon and special weapon.
Attachment 7206
Why not use the full-screen, especially when playing alone?
That's where the gameplay issue's show up.... The framerate drops the whole time. A new enemies appears, framerate drops. Enemies shoots, framerate drops. When using you special attack the screen is cleared for a few seconds and everything moves a lot faster (Probably the way is originally should be.) But then it drops again. Frustrating when trying to dotch bullets and step on moving platforms. Talking about moving platforms... You can walk and shoot diagonally, but especially walking can be very precise. So expect to die a lot when trying to cut corners!
Don't get me wrong. It's not entirely bad, but it's not so good either... The music is fine (some nice early Mega drive tunes) and gameplay is ok, but a lot of the fun get lost in the framerate issue's.

Golden Axe got 2 extra stages when ported to the Mega Drive. Why not make this Devilfigure to an kick-ass end Boss?. I mean the sprites are already there:daze:
At least we get this incredible beautiful ending screen:bull:

@sjorspion: Awesome. :)
Take heart -- the Japanese version apparently had twice as many levels. And hey, you're almost halfway!
I will try to conquer Powerball, but I don't have this game/manual -> can somebody give me some tips how to play?
and take Mortal Kombat. Do I just need to finish the tournament with one fighter to have it done?
^One fighter on Medium or better is fine for MK. I looked around for a Powerball manual online but couldn't find one, and alas I've never owned nor played the game. There are a couple videos on Youtube, though.
Sorry I haven't been around much lately. Got married, honeymoon, new job, and moving across the state all in the past couple of months. Still living out of boxes and suitcases.
I beat the madden game but can't find the pics I took. I think I took them and accidentally didn't save them. I can beat it again if need be.
btw, I did take down Pat Riley's Basketball the other night.
I'm still trying to formulate a response after my embarrassing face-palm of beating the wrong Power Rangers game last week.
now that I'm here I'll give this a go...
So somewhere (I think it was the Sega-16 review) I read that the BGM composer from Power Rangers The Movie had also done the BGM for Pat Riley's Basketball. It must have been divine fate! I was meant to play these two games back to back!
Pat Riley's Basketball seemed like it was shaping up to be a real pain in the ass. The "Tournament Mode" is only three games long, but there are no options to set game time, nor are there continues or passwords. Each game is roughly 1/2 an hour, so be prepared for an hour and a half of basketball if you want to get the trophy in this one. It is rapidly paced and just a couple wasted ball possessions can cost you a game.
Winning the first game can be done easily enough by running up to the basket and initiating a dunk. Back and forth up and down the court you'll go, with the computer missing enough shots to give you a win.
The second game demonstrated that I wasn't going to have a chance unless I learned how to shoot 3-point shots and steal the ball. This took me hours, and I began to hate it. Nothing seemed to have any correlation to successfully stealing the ball nor in making 3-pointers. I searched desperately online for some pointers, and ended up reading anything I could find which mentioned "Pat Riley's" or "Super Real" Basketball. A couple reviewers specifically mentioned that they could find no correlation with the controls and 3-pointers and stealing, and one guy wrote that button mashing is the way to win. I couldn't accept that Sega (or SIMS ?) would be that sloppy in their design, and I vaguely remembered a CG&E tip (or maybe it was on a Sega Visions collector's card) which said to push the "B" button a third time just before the animation releases the ball for a 3-pointer. A few hours of trying this and I could not make shots consistently, maybe only 10% would be successful - I mean seriously, I probably watched 100's of times as the ball bounced off the rim.
I began to consider that only certain players could make 3-pointers and that the player stats actually had some effect besides their noticeable running speed. So then I wasted plenty of time switching players around and then trying to decipher onscreen who was who. That was fruitless.
I'm then at a point where I considered just playing through on Easy to get it done, and hope that there weren't multiple "endings" in this early game. But that felt like cheating and wasted effort.
Took a few days off.
Went back to it, got to the 3rd match and had my ass handed to me. The CPU players would strip the ball from me sometimes possession after possession, and they seemed to never miss a shot. This sucked.
Another couple days letting it sit, and then I decided to just train and figure out how the hell to do three-pointers ~ to worry about nothing else, only shoot 3-pointers. Again watched countless "brick" animations of the ball jamming the rim or bouncing off the backboard. But at times I'd sink a few in a row. Something was working! And then dozens would miss. What the heck?!!
http://www.sega-16.com/forum/attachm...1&d=1374567474
Instead of looking at the hands and anticipating the ball releasing, I started looking for clues in the player jump animation. I finally decided that the white waistline on the shorts would cross the bottom of the screen right when I needed to make the third button push - and hold the button until the white line reached it's apex. Yes! I started to see repeatable success. But then I'd lose it again... So it isn't exactly what I described with the 80's gym shorts, but that helped me to find the rhythm (make all the jokes you want!). It's two split second button pushes to jump & initiate the shot, and then a split second wait, and a slightly longer push. So like: tap, tap, wait, push/release ~ but all very quickly, where in the heat of things it becomes frantic when you're just trying to steal the ball and suddenly find yourself in the 3-point animation, and in that third match every shot is needed. Once ya get it though, the game is cake.
http://www.sega-16.com/forum/attachm...7&d=1374308211
Oh yeah, and being able to steal the ball is key too. Very often the computer players will steal the ball right back from you, but it at least ties them up for a bit and runs down the clock.
To steal; it seemed like it's best to run up behind a dribbling player and just tap on the "C" button. Often when I did steal the ball then I'd accidentally pass the ball or get a traveling call. Many such issues with the game in that regard. This isn't a basketball sim by any means, this is basketball from the era of "Double Dribble" and as such is very arcade like, so things are quick and fast paced and my fingers were actually sore by the time I won the tournament.
And once again, after all that perseverance, I have a fondness for the game. It's sloppy and prehistoric in some regards, but once I became proficient, it was still challenging and genuinely fun.
http://www.sega-16.com/forum/attachm...8&d=1374308216
And well here's a kicker, for my Championship Match my New York team had dark blue uniforms, and the computer Houston team had bright blue uniforms. WTF? are you kidding me. 10 blue players on that court, on my 1989 television! No exaggerating it made me eyes and brain hurt trying to keep track of what was going on.
http://www.sega-16.com/forum/attachm...6&d=1374308208
Pat Riley's Basketball was one of the first Genesis games I'd gotten back in 1990 (maybe one of the games I got from that "buy 2 get one by mail" promo), and I'm sure I only got it back then to have a two player sports game to play and to show it off to my Nintendo friends who thought Double Dribble was the shit. So 23 years later, the damn game almost worked me into submission. But I showed it I can still (re)learn a trick or two.

Ah Mortal Kombat.....another trip on the memory lane..
Although it has quite a history of it own; it singlehandely led to the creation of the ESRB!
During the 16-bit wars, Nintendo censored the SNES port and so did Sega...Although did they?
Attachment 7220
Suddenly everyone wanted the Mega drive port, cause there where secret codes to enable the blood and arcade fatalities again! This made the Mega Drive slightly more populair than the Snes. Mortal Kombat was all about the blood and fatalities, so what's left when these things are censored...?
As you probably understand from my username, back in the days I was more of a Mortal Kombat fan, than a Street Fighter fan. But the first game I owned was Ultimate MK3, because before that my parents though I was to young for fighting games. (Although I've been practicing Martial Arts since then....and already owned Eternal Champions ;) ) After UMK3 came MK2, MK1 and MK3 for my Mega Drive. Although MK2 is my favorite, it's always good to see where it started.
Let's dive in this ports of MK1:
First thing I notice was that the six-buttons controller doesn't always responds well, mostly the LK button.
I've tried different controllers and different REV's (00/01) but this kinda annoyed me.
Secondly: In some of the stages (courtyard for instance) they have replaced the cloud sky with just a baby blue layer, yuck..:yuck:

Talking about codes....
When I was a kid is was playing around in the sound menu.
Go to the SOUND FX and put the number to 17, and keep pushing the Right+A button until the *pling*sound stops.
Then wait a few second, then the game will play lose sound samples that aren't in the sound menu :)
I don't know if it's a bug or cheat, but it's funny. And I can't remember it's described on other sites :P
For Powerball: Lost some matches, win some matches but I'm getting the hang of it...
Thanks for that! And naah, we can take your word for it. If you do find the pics, feel free to post them.
Great to see progress on the sports front from you and marlowe221, and great recap/capsule review. That's incredibly useful information about the timing of 3-point shots!
No need for embarrassment -- after all at least it (MMPR:TM) is a new one on your own beaten list.
Aha, so it is based on that! When you first started posting, I kept wanting to misread it as "sjorpion", but figured I was just making a false cognate. :D
I've noticed this too, and am surprised that more people don't complain about it! I can't remember whether it was the LK button in MK1 that responded inconsistently for me, but I know that in MKII, if I jump backwards with Jax while holding down LK (to charge the earthquake/ground-pound attack), and then try to fire off a standing HK, it often won't work.
I've beaten the first 24 levels in Junction, so I'll claim it. I could theoretically just jump to Level 50 from the Configuration menu, but according to the manual you need to have 100000 points to get the ending (so I'd probably need to start 5-7 levels earlier), and either way I'd rather do it "right" by beating all the levels individually first.
I've gotten stuck a few times in Shove It, but never as stuck as I've gotten on room 76. I've been there for days now, I just can't figure it out.
http://www.sega-16.com/forum/attachm...9&d=1374607230
Since I was able to completely empty my pouch and get a single 4-way in the process (settle down, Beavis), I think I beat (?) Ishido: The Way of Stones. Any dissenting opinions, or can we call this one done?
Uh, you said "beat." Huh huh huh.
I'm to the point with level 76 of Shove It where I've got to either look up a solution for the level (does this defeat the point?) or give up and leave my level 70 password here for someone to pick up later. The game lets you select any of the next ten levels when you get to a round number (seriously, it does - this is bizarre because it means you could beat the game while playing just 16 of the 160 levels, which I thought was probably against the spirit of this project), so anybody could pick it up at 76 if necessary. For that matter, a third option is I could just skip any level I get stuck on for more than two days, as the game lets you do this without penalty as far as I can tell. Which do you think I should do? I'm not even halfway into the game, of course.
It's a tricky question since we do allow walkthroughs, but I agree that looking at one wouldn't be in the spirit of the game. However, there's no need to do the levels in order, so I'd say to move on to later levels for now and come back to it. (Of course that wouldn't work if you were stuck on Level 80.) If you still end up stuck, maybe someone else can look at a walkthrough and give you a hint, or something along those lines.
A bit OT, but: Qbillion for Game Boy does the exact same thing with passwords/level selects in groups of 10. You could also finish it by only beating Level 10, 20, etc., and I occasionally beat a group of 10 out of order, but like you I feel that beating the game really means beating every puzzle. Qbillion has 120 levels, and I was able to beat the first 118 -- but I'm totally, utterly, completely stuck on Levels 119 and 120, which are several orders of magnitude harder than the rest of the game.
And...I've been stuck on those two puzzles for over a year. :( (Not that I've been trying for the past year, but I did give one of them another shot a couple months ago, and didn't get much closer to a solution.)
Cool, sounds good. I actually own the game but played it in emulation since I was at work, so I didn't have the manual at hand. I did look at the ROM in a hex editor, though, and found no sign of any "CONGRATULATIONS!" text hidden away.
More progress on TSB 2:
Playoffs are set:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-R...3204322107.jpg
^Nice one, looks like the finish line is in sight!
BTW here's another 128K game that I'm unsure what to do with: Block Out. I don't think this has an ending, and there's nothing in plaintext in the ROM. Maybe it should be disqualified?
EDIT: OK, I've cleared one story of blocks on the hardest level (10) in all three default modes in Block Out. That seems like a reasonable standard for beating it, at least for our purposes. (No screenshots, I'm afraid, but they wouldn't really amount to much anyway.)
I'm dropping my Operation Europe: Path to Victory 1939-45 claim for now, as I just don't have the patience to deal with its obscure gameplay. Instead, I'll claim Wardner, since I've gotten to the last level just now.
I've also gotten to Level 41 (out of 50) in Junction. This last world/set of 10 levels looks pretty brutal.
I beat Desert Strike earlier this year , sorry no evidence
I've played a couple of matches with Powerball but I just can't get the hang of it.
It though is would be something like speedball 2....
So I would like to drop it and claim NBA JAM as sport title if that's ok.
I noticed that if you finish a match on NBA JAM you return to the main menu, do I just have to win from all the teams in head to head mode to have it done?
Oh and I would like to claim Ultimate MK3 :)
Meanwhile, I beat Wardner. Since I played in emulation, here are two screenshots, then a camera shot of my laptop on the high score screen with a Post-It:

Fun little game! I didn't find it too frustrating, though after losing half a dozen lives at the final boss, I did look at a YouTube video to get the right pattern.
Hello there!
Reached 60 regular season games on NBA Action '95 (59-1)! Playoffs are getting closer...
Teams that i won't face anymore now include the Sacramento Kings and the first three eastern teams, defeated 4 times each: Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers.
I have no new beaten game this time (tried with Rolo to the rescue, but with no luck), so i decided to fill this space with some tips about how to master NBA Action '95. I know you were all waiting for them!! :p
OFFENSE TIPS:
- Forget assists. Basketball should be a team game, but in this case is it not. When you have the ball, just run towards your basket, open a path and score. The more you pass the ball, the easier you get intercepted, especcialy when close to your area.
- Dunk is the most unstoppable shot. You should go for a dunk the most of the time, it will rarely fail. The game is very glitchy, sometimes the dunk animation starts even if you are in the farthest corner of the paint: take advantage of it.
- To not rely on 3-points shots too much: sometimes they enter, but usually they don't, even with players with the highest 3-point stat.
- Keep the turbo button always pressed, your players won't get tired so easily.
- If an opponent stands on your way, try to dunk in his face: most likely, you'll take a foul from him and also score the dunk.
- If you are trying a regular shot and you are blocked by an opponent, quickly tap the shot button: you will fake a shot and he will undoubtedly jump for the block. Now you can take your time and shoot without worries.
- There is also that thing about the "red cursor/player on fire - blue cursor/player in bad shape", but it's not really as important as the manual states.
DEFENSE TIPS:
- Keyword here is steal. Don't let the opponent reach his shooting area, grab him the ball before he even reaches the middle area. You may commit a lot of fouls the first times, but when you get used to it you'll drive your opponents crazy.
- Do not jump for block unless you are in a very favorable position. You will risk a lot of fouls or goaltending violations.
- A tip for rebounding: when a shot is launched, analyze the other players: if they run away or stand still, the shot is gonna enter, so don't bother about jumping. If they are going towards the basket, it will fail, so jump immediately. This trick is particularly useful when the ball rotates around the rim, or with the last free throw of a battery.
- This is quite a cheap trick, but it works: when an opponent is throwing-in the ball, have a player stand immediately in front of him. If you are lucky, he will pass the ball to you, and since you are already near your basket, all is left for you is to dunk ^_^.
GENERAL TIPS:
- The game is veeeery glitchy. Learns you glitchs and take advantage of them!
- No matter how good you play, sometimes you will lose the ball in a very stupid way, like passing the ball to nobody or commiting a foul while you're standing still. It's inevitable, so just accept it. For fairness, this will also happen to your opponents.
- Substitutions aren't important, unless you play with an high number of minutes per quarter. Since this game is sppedy, 4-6 minutes are usually enough for a score of 100 points, so you won't need to care about your tired players at all. Substitute your players only for the sake of seeing all of your roster in action.
- Rely a lot on your centers. They are the tallest, the most offensive and they are always the closest to the basket, both in offense and in defense. Playmakers are good for stealing, the others are nearly useless. Your opponent will rely a lot to its center, too: 90% of the time the mvp of the match will be your center or his. (also, mid-90's actual NBA was really focused on that role).
- DON'T EVEN TRY to apply the above tips on modern basketball games: they are the reasons why i suck at those.
(double post for the sake of post counting!)
About NBA Jam, it's quite easy to determine when it's beaten: if you "enter your initials for record keeping", the game will keep track of the opponents you already beaten, and assign you an undefeated one.
See for reference the first minute of this video:

I would happily help, the problem is choosing a game that even one of the worst players on the site (that is me) would have no bad frustration* plus choosing a sports game that is both accessable, enjoyable and gets this list down. In terms of sports games, I can't understand American football, basketball and baseball at all (basketball not as bad as the other two but still) which is a problem considering most of the sports games that need to be done are of them types. It's better to get a bit of help than it is to claim a game then turns out not to be able to do it at all.
It's just that looking at the stats, it's less than 50% complete (with 5 months or less until next year) and I'm worried that this project will flop. It doesn't help that apart from the sports games, there's the strategy/RPG games too that take a while. Oh I just wish that I could have someone with skills like The Coop, tim, Kollision or Zebbe or any good knowledgable person.
* - I've only managed to beat Sonic 2 without any Chaos Emeralds on my last life, Streets of Rage 2 on the easiest difficulty on my last life too and a bit of luck on Normal difficulty on Castle of Illusion. Yeah...

and many more..
I have won some matches with NBA JAM so that's going well, especially after Powerbal ;)
I enjoy fighting games a lot so if it's not a problem, I will continue my fightinggame-spree with Samurai Shodown.
I suggest you ask PimpUigi if you can take his claim on Ariel: The Little Mermaid, because it is one of the easiest games on the system (if not the easiest). Only four wimpy levels which can be beaten in half an hour. For a sports game, I'd suggest NHLPA '93 or NHL 95. EA's hockey games are among the easiest sports games IMO. Good luck! :)
^Yeah, Ariel is pretty easy indeed, especially if you play through Easy first so you know where everything is. (Whatever you do, don't start with Hard.) Pinocchio's not hard either, just takes a bit of persistence.
Another option for a super-easy sports game (though it's not short) is IMG International Tour Tennis, which I've mentioned before. Unless something changes later in the game, the CPU AI is completely broken. It can't handle lobs, and will whiff or hit them out 75% of the time. If you start working on it, let me know.
I personally stick mostly to tennis and baseball, since I've never understood the rules of American football and am not 100% clear on hockey or basketball either. But if we manage to run out of tennis & baseball games, I'll start working on whatever's needed.
As for the question of whether we'll finish -- well, we'll just do the best we can. Certainly we're hampered by the Genesis's huge sports game library, since sports games are unpopular and often very time-consuming -- but that's the reality of the system's library, as any used game shopper can attest.
AFAIK, the only time one of these "beat-'em-all" drives has succeeded is last year's NES effort at NA; before that, they'd tried and failed a couple of times. We're doing better than most prior efforts I know of, and we're only a few games shy of the halfway point, so that'll be a psychological boost. If StarMist hadn't disappeared, I suspect we'd probably be 15-20 games ahead of where we are. :( I hope some prior contributors can get back on board, but we've gotten some new ones too.
(A thought: if we don't succeed this year, maybe we'll do the US Sega CD and 32X library next year. That's eminently doable, I think.)
@sjorspion: Awesome, and I'll mark you down for Samurai Shodown. :)
Have Wukong or Star Odyssey been beaten this year? I will take one of those up if available
^Yeah, those are excluded, I'm afraid, since they're unlicensed games (from a publisher that never got licensed, unlike EA and Accolade). It's a shame, but otherwise we'd have had to contend with Bible Adventures, Whac-A-Critter, etc.
BTW, just to demonstrate what I'm talking about w/r/t IMG International Tour Tennis:
We can make it! I'm sure :)
Another (fighting)game bites the dust!
One of SNK-flagships. The almighty Samurai Shodown (Not ShoWdown :P)
Althought Samurai Shodown 4 is my favorite. I still have a soft spot for SS1.
And the megadrive version is way better than that 'microfighter'-Snes version (Yes, it does have Earthquake but he has the same size as the Mega drive sprites :P)
I remember the first time playing Samurai Shodown. I got frustrated all the time, because of the slow heavy slash and massive damage it does.
But when I finally mastered it, I find SS to be more tactical than StreetFighter or MK.
SNK realized that and drop the arcade 6 buttons configuration (3x punch/3x kick) and change it in to Weak/Medium/Heavy Slash, Kick and Special button.
Now U were able to make small jump, lay flat on the floor and swap places. This made Samurai Shodown even more tactical.

There is one thing i HATE about the SNK fighting games. The difficulty of the boss characters. (called the SNK boss syndrome)
All the credits I used where to finally defeat AMAKUSA. Learning his cheap tricks and try to avoid the half-lifebar-consuming-special-moves :bs:
