hmm... I think that would be Streets of Rage 3 for me. I constantly hear about how terrible it is but I love that game. Don't get me wrong, I love sor2 more, but all the bad things I hear about 3 are just nitpicking. Did everyone just look at the cover of the game and not actually play it? Had a great soundtrack, solid game play like 2, an interesting 2 new characters (I thought). I don't see what the big deal is. Only thing I didn't like was the power bar for special attacks that allow you to perform them without losing health. I felt that made it way easier.
SOR III might be polarizing but I thought it was because of all the changes made from the Jap. version.
I like golden axe 3. Yeah a lot of people say a lot of bad things about it. i like how you got lots of paths to pick from I love the co-op magic combo system! Over all its a good fun game tho, more so with a friend!
Heavy Nova, Light Crusader, Strider, and Castle of Illusion come to mind (though the number of people willing to openly criticize COI is small).
If you want to go beyond the genesis, radiant silvergun is one of them. Not many people seem to just "kind of enjoy" RS cause its a "decent game".
For just genesis, perhaps mortal kombat 1 could fall under this category?
That's true it don't look as good as later gens games, it looks kind of first round of games really. Tho that does not take away the fun, for me anyway. Maybe the game was rushed I have no clue. The monsters you ride are kind of weak, i felt they was weak in GA2 as well and that GA1 has the best ones. Again over all its really fun game to play co-op with a friend now maybe solo the game loses points as you can no longer use the duel magic.
PSII.
Eternal Champions.
MK series.
Vectorman.
(Snatcher).
GA 1 and 2 \\ GA 3. Those who like the first two tend not to like 3. There are also plenty of people who hate the whole series.
Wily Wars.
The Ooze.
The Punisher.
Musha.
X-Men.
Sonic 3D Blast. Some, probably many think of it as inferior to the previous Sonic trilogy, while others appreciate its unique take on the Sonic universe. I've been on both sides of this fence.
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
James Pond III
Ecco
Altered Beast
Around here I would say Snatcher. There a lot great games that get that over used title of "overrated" but I think Snatcher gets it the most along with the most defence.
IŽll definately agree with golden axe 3 and eternal champions.
IŽll add the first Sonic, not that it is bashed or anything, but of the md 2d sonic games its considered by many the best and by others the worst...
Some people hate on Ecco, and it's one of my favorites.
Lately I see a lot of people ragging on Vectorman, mostly for stupid reasons. Great game, that.
I thought Columns was a classic, but the review here gives it a 3. :? (And speaking of review scores, obligatory Super Thunder Blade reference.)
For my group of friends, it was always Vectorman.
As was covered in-depth on Game Sack, Sonic CD.
Depending on who you ask it's the best 16-bit Sonic side-scroller or the worst.
Also the Donkey Kong Country games, especially on these forums.
I personally didn't enjoy it much at all (I much prefer World of Illusion), and at least one or two other Sega-16 members had the same reaction. But many (most?) Sega-16 members seem to love Castle of Illusion -- and that's why I named it for this thread. :)
BTW another one is Gain Ground, which people really do either seem to love or hate. I'm in the former camp -- it's easily in my top 10 for Genesis.
Where was Batman and Robin for Genesis?
Great technical showpiece but a very flawed run & gun by developers who didn't really know what they were doing, regarding gameplay engine, balance, difficulty, etc. Those flying stages with their obnoxious length and amount of enemies are the biggest indicator that these guys were amateurs.
Should have handed actual gameplay and level design off to a more experienced developer to make the rest of the game worth a damn outside the graphics.
^ I agree with all that but I still dont think its a terrible game and its worth owning IMO.
Theres something about part 3 thats off to me. To me it looks different from part 2 and the graphics and music arent as good. I think DKC is a case of doing too little and DKC3 is trying to do too much. 2 is neither doing too little or too much and is a perfect blend and balance.
Hmm...megaman 3!
Finally gave this thread some thought.
Light Crusader
Landstalker
Sonic CD
Soul Star
I've never been able to agree to people's negative criticisms of those games, and have read the same for/against arguments over the past 10-15 years.
^for the first two I've just never been able to get the hang of isometric games. I respect Landstalker quite a bit though it's not my cup of tea.
I don't particularly hate Sonic CD but just as you don't get the criticisms I never understood the hype.
Not being into isometric games is entirely respectable, I just can't stand to read people try to claim the jumping is broken or similar complaints about the controls.
That's a similar rub with the common complaints about Soul Star's control scheme. If a game can be played fluidly and masterfully by a good many players, then I don't think it is very legitimate to fault the particular game for what one may perceive as bad controls.
With Sonic CD, I completely understand people's common criticisms. It's just that when someone says that the levels are jumbled and confusing to navigate, that is simply illustrating that they aren't any good at playing it, and simply don't "get" it.
Vectorman is definitely one of them. It's one of my favorite games (probably top 10), but I see it trashed pretty frequently as well. Some thing the graphics are vibrant and cutting edge, others think the graphics are subpar and washed out.
Also Konami's flagship titles, Castlevania Bloodlines and Contra Hard Corps. Both seem to have a lot of followers (more so than Vectorman), but I see a lot of detractors as well. I don't know if they reach the level of "polarizing", but there are plenty of people who consider these either classics or overrated dogs. These two also happen to be in my top 10.
