Turok 1 was impressive for me because it was the first FPS game i ever saw with smooth 3D polygon models in early 97. The only other game i saw that didn't use sprites, at the time Turok was released, was Quake 1 (although im not totally sure if there was any other game, please correct me if i'm wrong) but compared to the higher polygon, smooth animated models of Turok they looked like bad animatronic dolls. Even with the smooth movement patch.
Additionally, Turok had some nice 3D foliage effects for the time (no cardboard trees) and some impressive particle effects as well (compared to the flying pixels of Quake). But Quake 1 had more geometry on the levels and more complex level design plus it didn't have fog, but Turok had outdoor levels mostly so it could be forgiven, all 3D polygon games had some kind of popup if they used big outdoor levels at the time.
