12. Andre Agassi Tennis (Genesis)

I'm reviewing this for Sega-16, so I'll keep my comments brief: despite the fact that I've developed some affection for the game in the course of beating it (Stockholm syndrome?), it really deserves no better than a grade of...well, I guess you'll have to read the review to find out, but it's a very small number. :D

13. Black Hole Assault (Sega CD)

Sat down to try out this robot fighting game (and sequel to Heavy Nova), and 40-45 minutes later had beaten the game. Sure, unlimited continues are part of the reason why -- but pretty much every fight can be reduced to some simple tactic in the face of which the computer folds like a bad poker hand, and the only challenge is figuring out what that tactic is.

The game has a couple cool ideas, like gravity that varies depending on which planet/moon/asteroid you're fighting on. And the controls are solid and intuitive. But I'd feel ripped off if I'd bought this at full price back in the early days of the Sega CD -- and badly synched anime cutscenes, a Redbook soundtrack, and a handful of novelties can't really remedy that. 3/10.

Gimmick! famicom. I got every secret thing, just to discover that to get the final stage you need to get the secret thing and clear the stage in the same turn...bummer...so I got the bad ending haha.

You Don't Know Jack (DS)

Finished all the episodes, and got rating 12/15 in the stats (Muttonhead)

Pretty good, even if it's half of the console versions, and also doesn't have the Wrong Answer of the Game or Cookie's Nocturnal Admissions, but it is understandable since this is a DS game and they probably couldn't fit everything on the cart what with all the voiceovers. At least it isn't an inexcusable travesty like the PC port.

Turn it Around (DS)

Finished every game on Challenge mode.

I honestly don't know what to think of this one. On the one hand it's pretty low-budget and some of the games aren't quite right gameplay-wise (the mini-version of Arkanoid on this has absolutely messed up hit detection), yet I found some strange enjoyment out of it.

Also I love how the credits on the US version just have the people from Majesco rather than, y'know, the actual developers.

The House of the Dead: Overkill (Wii)

Finished the standard levels today. It's a good game, but the slowdown and occasional slight freezes surely got annoying. Especially when trying to build up the combo meter (I legit only reached Goregasm once). Still good, though.

Retro City Rampage (WiiWare)

Finished the three games on Nolan's Arcade (Epic Meal Time: Epic Might Test, Virtual Meat Boy and BIT.TRIP: Retro City)

Both Meat Boy and BIT.TRIP were hell. ESPECIALLY BIT.TRIP. Fucking stages 5 and 7...

#49 F-15 Strike Eagle II (Genesis)- Arguably the best flight sim on the Genesis, with a decent framerate, good controls, and even visual detail settings. It's also a never ending loop of missions, which is a let down.

#50 World Heroes (Genesis)- A decent port of a decent game. The visuals aren't bad, but the controls are a bit odd, and there's only one ending for everyone. Another 4Mb, and I think this could have actually been a solid port without any major cuts.

#51 Slaughter Sport (Genesis)- Garbage. Complete and utter garbage on basically all fronts. The best thing to be said about it, is that some of the characters are average in terms of quality.

#52 Raiden Trad (Genesis)- I know not many like this port, but I do. It may not pack the visual punch of the arcade game, but the gameplay is intact, the music's pretty good, and the visuals are still pretty decent overall. It also has that extra stage, and an ending instead of an eternal loop.

#53 Sub-Terrania (Genesis)- Hard, but fun game with a nice twist in that it uses gravity at all times. Good visuals, funky music, solid controls and just the right amount of levels.

#54 Lightening Force (Genesis)- It's Thunder Force IV, minus the name recognition. It's awesome from start to finish, 'nuff said.

#55 Dark Castle (Genesis)- Nya nya nya nya nya! Nya nya nya nya nya! Nya nya nya nya nya! Nya nya nya nya nya! Nya nya nya MAKE IT FUCKING STOP nya nya!

#56 Shadow of the Beast (Genesis)- This game could have been such a solid port. But while the got the graphics and gameplay for the most part, they utterly fucked up the music, and did optimize it so it would play at the proper speed (it's too fast).

#57 Brutal: Paws of Fury (Genesis)- A fighting game for furries. Nice animation, some good character and background designs, hindered by so-so music, and less than stellar hit detection.

#58 Evander Holyfield's "Real Deal" Boxing (Genesis)- Not a very fun game. The fights drag on and how the computer can punch faster and recover quicker than you, even when your stats are higher, is really irksome. It looks good visually, but it's just repetitive, with a few REALLY grating songs.

#59 Ranger-X (Genesis)- What can I say? A visual and aural treat, with good controls, multiple endings, and some fun levels.

#60 Jeopardy! Sports Edition (Genesis)- It's the gameshow, but dumbed down, with REALLY easy to beat opponents.

#61 NFL Football '94 (Genesis)- My first and only football game on the Genesis. A bit easy, but a solid game nonetheless... even if the announcer has trouble keeping up with the game half the time.

#62 Outlander (Genesis)- It's Madmax without the license. The driving sections are my favorite part, with all the action going on as you careen down the road. The sideview mission are dull, but thankfully they don't last too long. I just wish you'd get more gas so you didn't have to stop so often, as you only get one can of gas per stop most of the time.

#63 The Terminator (Genesis)- Difficult, but it's over with so fast. The graphics aren't bad, and the music' pretty good. But there are times when the terminators just come at you nonstop, making some sections drag on.

#64 Mercs (Genesis)- Two modes, solid graphics and music, and it shows that Sega was actually pretty good at porting other companies games back in the day. Shame about the game being easier than the arcade game though.

#65 Jack Nicklaus' Power Challenge Golf (Genesis)- Ugly graphics, strange hitting physics, so-so music, and no real end. Even the tournament mode just... stops.

#66 Techno Cop (Genesis)- All I have to say, is that the turning physics are backward (you get pulled toward the inside of a turn, instead of thrown toward the outside). That's all you need to know regarding how bad this game is.

#67 Golden Axe (Genesis)- It doesn't have the visual pizazz of the arcade game, but it makes up for it with a couple of extra levels. A solid port on basically all fronts.

#68 Revolution X (Genesis)- It's a really dull game that get's too drawn out, but it does a few neat things. Some FMV with voice, and even a few 3D scrolling sections. But the graphics are still pretty meh overall, and the music's not going to win any fans either.

#69 Time Killers (Genesis)- Bad. Just... really bad.

#70 Back to the Future III (Genesis)- See above.

#71 Fantasia (Genesis)- It's shame that this game turned out as rough as it did. It got the visuals right, but the music is horrid, and the collision detection gets really wonky at times.

#72 Spec Ops: The Line (PC)- I'd heard about this game, and when it went on sale at Amazon a while back for $2.49, I decided to give it a try. The story is definitely a high point with this game, as it keeps things shifting around up to the very end. The visuals are nice, and the music's pretty good too (a mix of original and licensed). The gameplay doesn't do much new, though some of the set pieces were fun. A solid game that might lack originality in the gameplay, but has it in other areas.

14. Frogger (PlayStation)

I'd unlocked the final level (Tropical Trouble) a while ago, but last night I got the rest of the yellow/golden frogs, and opened up the temple gates at the end of Tropical Trouble to access the FMV ending. I could have called it beaten there, but I went back and beat the three levels I hadn't completed, all of which were in the Sewer Zone (including the aggravating Uncanny Crusher).

I consulted a walkthrough a few times -- once to tell me where the yellow frog in the Desert Zone was, and twice when I reached obstacles that seemed physically impossible to overcome -- but those were very late in the game, when I was sick of replaying the same levels over and over just to get a 5-second opportunity to figure out where I was supposed to go. Then just for my own amusement, I beat the overall high score of 250k, but the game crashed before I could save it.

Most criticism of this game seems to revolve around the controls, but outside of the slippery ice/running water areas, they're fine -- only once in a great while did I feel like Frogger wasn't responding to my input. Instead, the game's terrible misstep is its repeated, misguided habit of denying the player enough visual information to make informed decisions.

This starts even from the first level, in which turtles give you no visual cue before diving underwater. Since all the turtles look alike, you have no way to quickly judge whether you can safely jump on a turtle's back, and no warning before it kills you instantly by diving. Compare the original Frogger, where they change color for a second or so before diving.

And this sort of thing happens over and over again: forced, tight zooms on the game's camera, ensuring that you can't see more than a step or two in front of you. Landscape objects that come between the camera and the player, so that you can't see enemies coming or can't see where Frogger is. Automatic camera rotation that suddenly changes the entire control scheme, leaving you little time to react. Unclear Z-axis placement in levels where you're expected to navigate complex, multilevel pathways or pull off huge jumps...

The list goes on and on. Combine that with utterly unforgiving collision detection and you've got a game that depends mostly on memorization and, more often than not, is intensely frustrating.

And that's a real shame because I actually think there's a very good, even great game buried under the frustration here. The stage designs are smart, and the process of figuring them out is rewarding -- but too often you have to replay the same segments over and over again just to get a crack at figuring out where you're supposed to go next. Ultimately, that's just no fun.

Dock a few more points for the mediocre documentation, the stupid absence of autosave (you have to remember to manually save after beating a level/before turning the game off, or you get to do it all again!), the lack of an immediate "Retry?" option (forcing you to manually re-select each level from a long menu), and the insufferable, near-unskippable "GAME OVER" tune that adds insult to injury, and we're looking at about 3/10.

11. God of War: Ascension (PS3):

I'm a huge God of War fan, so even though I couldn't imagine where they could possibly go with this series after the 5-part story between the previous games, I pre-ordered the collectors edition and picked it up on release day.

And man... what a disappointment. I hope Sony does some good with all the money this game will bring in, because it's pretty clear that profit is the sole impetus behind this shameless cash-grab.

You know what? I have a whole lot to say about this game, and much of it I've already written up here and deleted. I'm not going to go into my laundry list of complaints about this game's story, controls, and overall design. There's a lot of bullshit in this game, but at the end of the day, if all you want is a decent action game with some pretty graphics and a number of "ooh ahh" set pieces, then you can do a lot worse than this one.

But if you're looking for another great God of War title, you won't find it here.

Edit: To avoid hyperbole, let me just reiterate that there's a lot of things I really liked about this game, but at the heart of this game's failures is Kratos himself. It seems as though they forced out a half-baked story to act as a vehicle for the multiplayer concept. What they really should have done was introduce a different character. Just my opinion.

12. Mega Man 9 (PSN):

I downloaded this to my 360 the day it was released four or five years ago and never finished it.

This game is brutal, but I love it. Plus, it's got the best soundtrack any Mega Man game has had in years!

#73 Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits (Genesis)- Not sure it counts as "beating it" since it has no end, But I got the high scores for all five games on it.

#74 Far Cry (PC)- Got this game off of Steam a little while ago when it went on sale for cheap. Not a bad game in terms of visuals, gameplay and such. The acting was questionable, there were a few battles that seemed really unfair, the story was pretty run of the mill in ways, but it was a still fun.

#75 The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena (PC)- The goggled bad ass returns. Fun game with some interesting characters to interact with. A few frustrating spots, but overall, the visuals, gameplay, story and acting were solid.

1. Ghouls'n Ghosts
I'm not sure if what i've done to my body will ever recover, but I guess i've finally beat Ghouls'n Ghosts, don't think I can ever play a game that sends me back to Level 1 again.

Metroid + saving romhack

gotta love the original metroid on the nes with the ability to save your game and use a full sized scrollable map when you pause.

Not sure if I mentioned I cleared this, it was sort of necessary to test the romhack, got the best ending too!

#76 Blades of Time (PC)- This sequel to/remake of X-Blades, is noticeably better than the original. Better graphics, better gameplay and controls, and even a somewhat better story. The voice acting's pretty stiff, though. It's supposed to be a sequel, but it comes off more like a remake than anything else. On a side note, the new design for Ayumi makes her look like Nina from the Tekken series.

#77 Contra: Hard Corps (Genesis)- Fun, tough game.

13. Dante's Inferno (PS3):

The most blatant God of War clone I've played outside of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and this is definitely the better of the two. It falls short of the mark in terms of tone and atmosphere: it seems to want to be at times horrifying, disturbing, and shocking, and yet doesn't rise much above marginally creepy, mildly unsettling, and outright crass.

Aside from the the ridiculous premise and horrendous dialog (competently-acted but bafflingly obtuse), the gameplay is solid and satisfying. It's not nearly as good as it wants to be, but it's certainly better than I expected it to be.

15. Warrior of Rome II (Genesis)

After more than 80 hours of gameplay, I finally reached the end of this RTS title. I won't give it a rating since I'll be reviewing it for the site, but suffice it to say that it's a massive, massive improvement on its predecessor.

I finally beat, after like a year, Mr. Bones on the Sega Saturn.

It was daaaaamn hard at some points.

2. Crysis

4th month and my second beaten game.. slow month for me. Crysis isn't a bad game, actually it's a pretty good game, but the pacing is way off (too much just walking around to the next location devoid of enemies), but the paths are usually varied and theres a variety of ways/weapons to get around each stage popping off folk, definitely a good game that gets overlooked due to it's insane requirements, and even today this thing still packs a punch against a good mid-range PC. Also, the last few stages are too linear and too boring, and kinda end the game on a down note when the bosses more or less result in spam infinite rockets. Still, not too shabby, unlike some modern games on Delta skill it's also tough.

16. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (Sega Genesis)

Licensed platformer had some promising ideas, but cheap hits, respawning enemies, and ill-conceived stage design drag it down. 4/10.

17. Pac-Attack (Sega Genesis)

Tetris ripoff has a decent puzzle mode, and the inclusion of Pac-Man makes a surprising amount of sense. Good soundtrack too, but that's not enough to elevate the middling gameplay. 5/10.

18. Mickey’s Ultimate Challenge (Sega Genesis)

Shovelware aimed at kids, with dull, repetitive gameplay. Decent graphics, though. 3/10.

19. Fatal Labyrinth (Sega Genesis)

The roguelike-with-a-tiny-ROM gets a lot of flak, but I think it's basically a successful effort, despite the horrendously repetitive music. 6/10.

20. Chester Cheetah: Too Cool to Fool (Sega Genesis)

Sketchy controls, poor design, surprisingly crisp/clear graphics. It could be worse. 3/10.

21. Growl (Sega Genesis)

Beat-'em-up gets some points for the goofy theme and high onscreen enemy count. But the lack of a 2P mode is lame, and it's way too easy (1 LC'd the game the first time playing it, and then did it again on Hard!) and repetitive. 4/10.

22. Wimbledon Championship Tennis (Sega Genesis)

Once you figure out that Manual control is unplayable and switch to Semi-Auto, it's a decent little tennis game for a while, but the difficulty curve is stupid -- the enemy AI is either pathetically easy or inhumanly difficult, with no in-between. And the game's implementation of overhead smashes has nothing in common with real tennis, which ruins the gameplay against the strongest opponents. 5/10.

23: Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls (Genesis)

Never having played this before, I 1cc'd it to an Easy Incomplete, beat it on Normal using 1 continue, and 1cc'd it on Hard and Pro. All this was achieved on my first try (in each playthrough), and all using Jimmy Lee. Beating the game on Hard qualified me for the "good" ending, and Pro gave me an extra code at the end.

Total trash that blatantly rips off Street Fighter II and can't even get it right. But at least it's not actively unpleasant to play, and I can imagine it having some small amusement value in 2P mode. 3/10.

14. Life Force (NES): I've been "courting" this one for a few weeks now. I'll pop it in every now & then and play either until the end of the game or the end of my patience. I've seen the ending a couple times now, but always with the 30-life code and always with a continue or two. Tonight I beat it with no continues, although I still used the life code. Tonight I still had close to 30 lives by the last level, so I imagine that with a bit more practice I could beat the game legit.

Maybe I'll do that some time.



15. Metroid (NES): Can you believe I've never beaten this game before? Well, maybe you could... but would you believe that I've barely even played this game before? I rented it once back in the day and the next time I played it (and last time, in fact) was when I unlocked it on the Metroid Prime disc on the GameCube.

I've been reading Jeremy Parish's analysis of the game on Telebunny.net and that inspired me to dust off my copy and finally see what the fuss was all about. And yes, I cheated a little: I used a game map to guide myself through the game, not to mention some of Parish's tips (beating Ridley before Kraid, for example). I made it to Mother Brain's chamber early this afternoon (just a few hours after plugging the game in), died pretty handily, and then decided to start the game all over with a newly-realized strategy of my own: leave that E-tank in the ceiling at the beginning of the game for the final rush into Norfair. This strategy worked all right, although I eventually had to make two trips into the chamber; one to blast through all but the final energy field and the next with full power to finish the game off.

Oh, and I got the best ending, I think.

#78 Red Zone (Genesis)- Hard as hell, with lots of neat graphical tricks. Not liked by a lot of people, but I enjoy it.

#79 Cyborg Justice (Genesis)- Long, dull beat'em up game with robots. Not utter horrific, but it's not going to give the SoR series any level of challenge.

#80 After Burner II (Genesis)- Dumbed-down port, but still a solid one, especially given how early in the Genesis' life it came out.

#81 #82 #83 Ys Origins (PC)- I played through this game with all three characters to see their differing stories, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a simple RPG, but it's done quite well with nice pixel graphics, great music, and a pretty good story. As the name suggests, it's a prequel to the Ys games that many are familiar with (Ys I & II).

#84 Ys I (PC)- The remake of the old classic game. The bump fighting takes a bit of getting used to, but it's an enjoyable, somewhat short RPG with nice graphics and good music.

#85 Ys II (PC)- Remake of the second one. More magic to play with, not really any longer than the first game, uses the same bump fighting, and has solid graphics and music.

#86 Gundemonium Recollection (PC)- An odd little bullethell side-scrolling shmup with a strange, wild west vibe. You'll fight pumpkins with witch's hats, pissed off rabbits in blue dresses, and large-breasted opponents with Mai Shiranui-like jiggles. It's weird, but well done.

24. Dead Heat Scramble (Game Boy)

Half-pipe racer has some promising ideas, but the gameplay doesn't really go anywhere, the controls are iffy, and your fate is far too dependent on random item drops. At least it's got unlimited continues, but on a portable system where battery life is an issue, why not just have passwords? 4/10.

25. Saint Sword (Genesis)

Not a bad little action-platformer, but it's too easy, and I was able to 1LC it on Hard within a couple days of first playing the game. The Ghosts 'n' Goblins move of forcing you to beat the game twice is bogus, and the animal transformations are underutilized. But it's still kinda fun to play. 6/10.

26. Plumbers Don't Wear Ties (3DO)

Played through this, uh, "game" with my fiancée tonight. It's kind of pointless to talk about how awful it is: that's a given, as is its grade of 1/10.

That said, we were even more amused than we expected to be. There are plenty of dull stretches, and it sucks that you can't skip ahead in (most of) the cutscenes slideshows, but there's a certain bizarro Dadaist sensibility to it which made us laugh our butts off on several occasions.

Saints Row 2 (360)

Beat the main story mode. Game is far more glitcher than I remember.

Sonic After the Sequel (PC)

Beat the game yesterday in Story mode; beat it just now on Classic mode with all 7 emeralds collected. Pardon my French, but those Special Stages were fucking murder to complete.

27. Escape from Monster Manor (3DO)

This spooky clone of Wolfenstein 3-D was released shortly after the 3DO launch, and the rush to get it to market meant that the game suffered in the variety department: over the course of its 12 levels you get just one weapon, only four different monsters, and very little variety of gameplay. But what's there plays very well, has a smooth framerate, and only occasionally gets more frustrating than enjoyable. The soundtrack is very hit or miss, though. 7/10.

28. Double Dragon (Genesis)

I got this a few years ago and beat it the same day I got it. Last night I pulled it out again for the "beat 'em all" project, and was able to beat it on the hardest settings with no trouble. Still a terrible port -- it's way too easy and just feels "off". 2/10.

29. The Addams Family (Genesis)

This, on the other hand, is a very fun little technical platformer that does just about everything right. The challenge is real but never frustrating (thanks to passwords and plentiful extra lives), and the stages are smartly designed and full of little secrets and shortcuts. (Each subsection even has its own name, which is a nice touch.)

The controls have a mild case of the slipperiness that so often plagues 16-bit platformers, but compared to most of its peers this comes out miles ahead. Oddly, a couple small areas have no music for no apparent reason; wonder why that is? 8/10.

3. Justice League: Heroes - PS2

Yet another quick and easy game. About twice as long as Hulk, though. I'd say it isn't quite on par with X-Men Legends, but it's still fun.

17. Darkwing Duck (NES): Love me some Darkwing Duck. I rented this game BITD and I'm pretty sure I made it to the second wave of bosses at that time. Fast-forward to the present day: I stumbled upon this cart for $4 a few years ago (with manual!) and for some reason waited until now to give it a decent run. All in all, a pretty challenging game , but with patience and a generous helping of continues, I was able yo bulldoze through it in a few hours.

16. Super Metroid (Wii VC): Beat this a few weeks back. Yay.

30. Toys (Genesis)

Another "re-beat" for the beat-'em-all project. I still think this game had a lot of potential, though the end result is only middling. 5/10.

31. Chuck Rock (Genesis)

The Sega CD version was a little better, but either way I find the game abrasive and not very fun. 3/10.

32. ATP Tour Championship Tennis (Genesis)

I'll hold off on grading this for now since I have a review planned for Sega-16, but suffice it to say that it's a well-intentioned title that plays reasonably well but is way too long.

33. Chester Cheetah: Wild Wild Quest (Genesis)

Probably a little better than the other Chester Cheetah game on Genesis, not that that's saying much. 3/10.
