I was watching a video of Mickey Mania for Sega CD and noticed a few neat graphical tricks, like the rotating crane at 1:24 and the spinning tower level at 3:32.
I'm aware of Gunstar Heroes and The Adventures of Batman & Robin and I'm amazed how they really push the hardware.
Can anyone suggest other games that do neat effects like those games?

Kawasaki Superbike is seriously impressive. The road looks like it's made out of polygons, too, as opposed to the Outrun-style skewing road typically used.
The effect in Mickey Mania on the Sega CD is the same exact effect as on the cartridge format. There are zero differences in graphics between the two (only in the music, sound effects, extra level and change in one furniture item in the ghost level). I, too, was amazed by the cylinder effects; but only until I saw the full version of those graphics better exploited in the PlayStation version.
As far as I know the ground is line scrolling just like Outrun, but the buildings are polygons. It's the same engine as Formula One by Domark, I just like the screen tilting in Kawasaki.Quote:

It could be they're using an Outrun style road with polygons for some of the road markings. Like the one on the left at 1.32 and the big colored arrows pointing forwards at 1:52.Quote:

I discovered Kawasaki Superbike about a year ago and found it to be VERY impressive.
It throws around a decent amount of polygons and has the cool screen tilt effect as sheath mentioned. But the thing that gets me every time are those KICK ASS PCM drums! I forgot how great they sound. Those have to be some of the cleanest most bombastic sounding drums on the Genny. I had to watch that video several times with my speakers cranked up.
The final level of Shadow Blasters always blew me away with it's over abundance of parallax clouds. The fact that it is set to Kim Songdongs epic soundtrack doesn't hurt either! Starts at 5:40

Scooby Doo Mystery uses software scaling to make the characters appear far away or close up, like most graphic adventure games. It doesn't look like Super Hang On style "scaling", using multiple preset sizes. It's honest to goodness scaling!
Dynamite Headdy does some cool stuff, like the tilting platforms in level 3 and the way the foreground and background appear to spin around a central axis in the Spinderella fight.
Wow, I knew and own most of the others in this thread, but I knew nothing about the smooth polygons in Kawasaki Superbike. I just ordered a complete copy and look forward to playing it on my Genesis. All the youtube videos of it make it appear super smooth at a high framerate. Quite a programming feat! Too bad the review on sega-16 seriously slams the game, leaving out the technical triumphs. Ranger X / Ex-Ranza has wireframe 3d cutscenes, absolutely gigantic sprites everywhere (one of the guns does a full-screen laser beam, and many bosses are full screen), shadow/highlight effects up the wazoo, and a bunch of crazy raster effects on a few stages (splashing water, 3d tubes, parallax linescroll, etc).
Simple linescroll effect, SF2 and Mortal Kombat had it years before.Quote:

If you look it's a bit more than the usual horizontal linescroll floor. The effect seems to scale vertically when the characters jump, giving the impression that the floor is 3D. It was the only thing that I found kind of neat about that game.Quote:

This game really surprised me. I thought it was going to be a generic sequel but I was completely wrong. It has a catchy soundtrack and its a blast to play. It has some really nice scaling effects and some creative graphical trickery for the overpasses and such.

I think Red Zone is really impressive with it's full-motion video, scaling, and rotation.
I also like F1 and Kawasaki Superbikes for their speed and smoothness, though I didn't play them as much after I got Virtua Racing.
Dick Vitale Basketball has kind of impressive scaling and rotation effects. If it was a little faster, I think it would be a pretty good game but it's too slow and can give you a headache if you play too long!
Great thread! These little tricks are one of my favorite things about the Genesis. Alien Soldier does some crazy crazy stuff, especially at the spider/moth boss...
The intro to Puggsy is really amazing too. Though I dont like the game.
This one really takes the cake for me. Especially after 28:34 When I first saw that, in 2000, my jaw hit the floor. This game deserves so much love, it is one helluva masterpiece. Tons of unlockables too, including different endings, playing as the fairy, and a plethora of routes to choose.Quote:
