Playing Prince of Persia

I've always loved the original Prince of Persia and it's sequel, but I've never been good at them. Recently I've set out to try and finally beat the original. Trying out the SCD version, since it has a save function and I'm only starting out. Absolutely fantastic game, it lives up to it's accolades. Of course, the game is also excruciatingly hard as well. One of the most difficult games I've ever played. Up to level 6 now and the third one was ridiculous, especially considering what little you have to do (though I went for the life up bottle).

Concerning port specific stuff, the cutscenes are nice to look at (strangely in anime style) and the accompanying dub over is hilariously bad. The graphics are pretty nicely spruced up, but I think the Genesis version was better. Excellent music all around, one of this port's high points.

I read that it's actually one of the better sega cd games. Too bad I never liked the game much to begin with. The movie is good times though.

No the Mega CD version is horrid imo - Its one of the worst ports of the game imo and takes no advantage of the hardware really . I would stick with POP II on the Mega Drive or POP on the Snes

From what I've seen, the Genesis cart version is the best looking by far (including the current gen HD version). The Mega-CD and PCE versions don't do much visually, but are fine considering the source material. It's been years since I played the MCD version, but it seemed to play perfectly. It does take advantage of the hardware for sound and cinemas.

A shame, POP is a masterpiece.

I disassociate the original two games completely from the Ubisoft games and movie. They are completely different. Only the name is what ties them together.

In what way is it "horrid"? How is it one of the worst ports? Doesn't seem so bad to me. It's completely playable. I've made it to level 6 with about 32 minutes left and I've gotten 3 or 4 life up potions.

Exactly. POP does take advantage of the CD medium. Not a lot during the game, but it's fine. The CD music helps the game a lot. Nice soundtrack. Been playing on a Model 1 Sega CD and I'm surprised how fast the seek time is when switching tracks.

Although I agree that the SCD version doesn't take much advantage of the SCD's possibilities, I still view it as a perfectly fine port that's worth playing. It's a classic game that controles well enough....for a couple of bucks. It's a SCD game that I would completely recommend to someone that is interested in the SCD, but is on a tight budget -a really cheap game that's still reasonably fun to play. TBH, there really aren't a ton of games that I'd rather play on the SCD - It would probably break my top 20 on the SCD.

Trouble is you're playing it now, not back in the time .I remember getting this on import before the Mega CD had been released in the UK/US and at that time Mega CD owners were desperate for software that showed what the system could do and do stuff beyond that of the Snes or MD. And in every way this is a worst port than the Snes version - even in the Sound dept which at the time pissed me off .

Those are the reasons why I'm so hard on it.

Being as this was the the only version I've ever played. I thought it was pretty fun. I found nothing wrong with it. Except the horrid voice acting of course.

No, it's not you. Prince of Persia is an extremely difficult game. How many levels are you into the game? I'm up to level 8 and it is brutal. Absolutely ridiculous. But it's a good kind of hard. The kind where the game isn't necessarily unfair, it just requires a lot of skill all at once.

For some reason this game reminds me of Oddworld. I'll have to pop in my other Sega CD copy of the game sometime soon when i get a chance to play it.

Loved the SNES version -- great soundtrack. I'm looking forward to playing through the SCD version at some point, but I've repeatedly heard it has major control problems.

Every port has the same "control problems". At least the ones I've played. The game is just touchy and rigid. It's pretty much impossible to play like an action game, unless you want the prince to die.

Level 8 wants you to play it like it's an action game though. :(

Yeah, it's difficult to tell with any given review of a POP port whether the reviewer has a legit point, or just doesn't like the game's mechanics. That said, my memory was of reading at least one review that said the SCD game had worse-than-average controls for the series/ports.

I just finished Prince of Persia! What a great, but ridiculously hard, game. Still great even on Sega CD. Level 12 was pretty difficult to figure out, but the solution eventually occurred to me. Jaffar was easy compared to that one fat guard in Level 6 though, haha. The screens after you kill Jafar are totally worth seeing, Mortal Kombat ain't go nothing on Prince of Persia.

I didn't have any control issues with this game, felt like every other version of POP I've played (like the Mac and Apple ][ versions).
