I've been checking this out and it looks like the best option for me. I have a multi mega and I want to play Sega CD games (Lunar, Lunar and Lunar) on it and I also want more space for game saves.
Is this the best option for me? Also how does the region free CD playback work? Does it install a new bios to your system or does it bypass the region lockout?
The Megacart can't be used as a RAM cart, it can only store game saves as a dump which you can use either to backup them up, or to restore them to the machine itself in case they get deleted for some reason. You can't access those saves in-game; or through the Memory manager on the console - only the Megacart can do it.
As for region switching, you hold a button at start-up to change the bios - A for American, B for Japanese or C for European, and then you pop in your game like normal. That's pretty much it.
So there is no way to access the game saves on the cart using the console? Well that is pretty stupid.

No no, you can access the game saves on the console. It has a different system though, I actually prefer it. I think it has like 8x or 16x the memory capacity of the sega CD.
You should get one, they are great.
You can also use it to run Mega Drive roms from a CD in the SEGA CD
Oh excellent, so I can copy and move save files on the console? That and making CD playback region free is all I need.

Thanks for the Rep Shrap. Yeah you should be pleased with it. Ive had mine for many many years and regard it as one of the most important things I have for my Sega CD. Everyone who has a Sega CD should have one. It was also the first Mega Drive flash cart I had before I got an Everdrive.

But no, the console can't handle transfering the saves itself. But the Megacart can.
So basically I plug the cart in and the Mega Drive will boot to the cart and from there I can move saves to and from the console?

Hi, I just stumbled across this thread. Would anyone know if you can transfer backed-up Sega CD saves from the Mega Cart to PC and vice versa? If so, would the save files work with an emulator? I prefer to use my original consoles, but I realize that these machines won't last forever...
I'm about to do a full recap on my model 1 (darn leaking smd caps grumble grumble), and am concerned about the longevity of the original battery in my sega brand ram cart. I'd hate to lose some of my saves from the good old days. Thanks!!

No, you can't back-up your saves from the Megacart to a PC. From what I heard from their forums, it was a planned feature, but was never implemented.
I wasn't very clear on my last post on reading it back, I'm using a Mega ED cart.
