Mega Drive. But I'm ok with Genesis, got kinda used to the name (what with most people on here referring to it as such).
I agree with you, "Mega Drive" just doesn't have anywhere near the same level of spark that "Genesis" does. It's such a bland, generic, and dated name... I do think the system would have done a bit worse under that name here.
(On that note, there are almost certainly more Genesis systems in the world than there are Megadrives. That says which name won in the market. :))
Genesis and Mega Drive are the same thing. Close this thread.
Mega Drive by far.
Genesis sounds religios to me(and I don't like religions).
Mega Drive for me. In fact, I prefer Japanese imports to US mainly because the unit I have is a Mega Drive and not a Genesis :) (but also partially because of the box art).
Mega Drive for me. Genesis feels uninspired. But i like the Genesis logo more than the Mega Drive one. Here in Brazil we had the Mega Drive name with the Genesis logo style. Perfect!
And Mega >>>>> Super!
Genesis. Its badass. It was the name of the console that actually began the 16 bit war hence the name, genesis. It was the beginning. Megadrive sounds like a PC format. hard drive, thumb drive, mega drive. Also, the blue on the MD looked boring, the logo is too round. I even prefer the Japanese MD logo over the PAL version. Also Genesis had way better box art. Want proof? Sonic 3. :sonic:
As for master system, I like the Japanese Sega Mark III. Sounds like a badass fighter Jet.
I only own the sega cd but is there a big difference between the two?
I prefer Genesis, but can understand someone liking Mega Drive better.
I prefer SegaCD, but can understand someone liking MegaCD better.
But for the life of me, I would never be able to take anyone seriously if they told me they preferred MultiMega to CDX. It sounds like the name of a vitamin supplement for cripes sake.
WonderMega is kinda dumb, but X'Eye is just weird.
Megadrive is a console, "Genesis" is a band.I used to use "Mega CD" but in recent years as a retro gamer i have switched to "Sega CD" which explains exactly what it is nicely.
Haha! So true! I've been looking for a CIB boxed PAL Model 1 console myself!
I was just in the UK recently and was lucky enough to stay with my cousin and his family. On one occasion for some strange odd reason, the conversation shifted to video games. Here were two 30 something year olds conversing about video games! It struck me as odd since I had never discussed the topic with him before. In the course of our discussion, he remembered the large catalogue of games that I displayed at my house and in passing described how he also owned the console. What? You owned the console as well?
Oh man! I was in for a treat!
I just needed to see the console! Like two school kids up to no good, we donned on our jackets and headed to his garage. After a couple of minutes he found it! In a large plastic container lay the model 1 console with a small library of games. What a beauty! For a second, I thought about asking if he would sell the console. But after reminiscing about the games we played back in the day, I realized he was a fan as much as I was. And with that, my quest continues! :p
With respect to the OP's question, I prefer the term "genesis" over "mega drive" for the simple reason that it was the birth/origin of something new and different in gaming: as a result I thought the name was rather fitting.
I use both, Megadrive is what I grew up with, but I do agree that the name "Genesis" has aged better as a name, Megadrive does sound terribly late 80s/early 90s now. I also agree that Genesis has more personality, however when you talk to people in England about the "Megadrive", people say it with a certain enthusiasm and energy that doesn't come across if you've never heard the word spoken that way before. They're both good names.
Since I live in North America, I exclusively use the term Genesis, otherwise people don't know what I'm on about.
Fair enough, it does capture the era in which it was created.
Well I can see what others on here mean when they say "Megadrive" sounds like some sort of peripheral or computer, where as "Genesis" is something in of itself. It would be like naming a car "superturbo" or something, it's a bit bland, where as "gallardo" or "spider" gives the car more of an edge because it's an actual unique name. It's all subjective though, people can read into words in many ways, all a matter of opinion.
In the UK at least, it never was written with the space in gaming mags from the time, or when it was listed in catalogs. In fact it's still sold in the UK without the space today: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/9063330.htm
The logo has a small space yes, even though it is much less pronounced in the EU/South America logo, so I guess technically it is wrong. But when all the media-outlets refer to it without the space, that's what is going to stick. Not justification mind you, but that's the reason.
EDIT: Example of MEGADRIVE in UK Mean Machines Magazine with was pretty much the most popular mag for video game consoles at the time: http://info.sonicretro.org/Mega_Driv...es,_July_1991)
It's better to look at the logo of the games to get the name right, than to just follow the media.
I myself prefer Mega drive, I think the main reason is because I grew up with that name. I think Genesis is a bit more original however, considering calling something mega was rather cliche back then too.
Is that even a question? MegaDrive of course, for it is the real name.
I accept MegaDrive, but not Megadrive. But Mega Drive is the best way.
Mega Drive is MEGA !!! , have impact and balls, and amazing games with hes name like Mega Turrican !!
Genesis sounds Phil collins to me, and thats it lol
I grew up in Europe so naturally it's Mega Drive for me, I was very surprised when I learned that the US used a very different name. Genesis is also a good name, although it reminds me of the doomsday weapon from Star Trek II/III.
The Angry Video Game Nerd made a good joke about it. In his Star Trek-themed episode, a Klingon suddenly attacks his room and the AVGN asks:
You want Genesis? *raises Sega Genesis* You can have Genesis!
Genesis sounds cooler to me and it was my first system as a kid so I like the beginning and all that.
I got mixed feelings I grew up with "Sega Genesis" and I like the way it sounds. I like "The Mega Drive" for reference ..not Sega Mega Drive. Sega CD sounds so much better than Mega CD because Sega CD gets to the point and that is not a regular compact disc its Sega CD (90's gaming)
Im spanish, so Mega Drive of course. Because always called "La Mega" (The Mega). To me, seems to suit it better than Genesis. I found calling "Genny" fun and adorable :)
Genesis all the way for me. I would wonder why Sega didn't name the Saturn the Giga Drive. But yeah Genesis just sounds smoother IMO.
megadrive for me
with or with out space i'm from europe so i would lean to megadrive
and off course it sthe machine's orginal name
genesis is a band a book and a terraforming device to me not a console
Mega drive since I grew up in Europe, but I think both names sound great.
Living in Brasil, Mega Drive is the natural choice for me.MEGA DRIVE!
Sega Genesis is pretty good too also.It would also be dificult to create something as catchy as "Genesis Does" with Mega Drive.
Genesis does what Nintendon't!
I hate this thread, its so stupid to ask, Because almost everybody prefers the name the console got in their own country.
Europe : Herp Mega Drive cause I grew up with Mega Drive!
USA : Derp Genesis cause I grew up with Genesis!
Japan : あなたは本当にこれを翻訳する時間がかかりましたか
japan would be megadrive too
