I'm from the USA and I prefer the Mega Drive name. It just sounds awesome - er.
As far as the actual hardware, the Mega Drive console and Mega CD looks SO much better IMO. More lights on the Mega CD and on the Mega Drive it has more text written on the console which I think makes it look nicer.
the sega 16 bit console will always be the genesis to me...I had no idea that everywhere else it was called the mega drive when I was a kid
yeah but will there be another post ?
I don't care that much for the name but i find the Mega Drive logo and box art designs much better. I don't like those stripes that much in genesis covers.

Genesis or Mega Drive? Neither. Nintendo for life!
I wish all the Genesis games had red stripes.
I don't hate people who like the later logo and red stripe pattern, but it totally ruined the packaging for me.
I also don't like the switch in packaging style for later Japanese releases.
I love the original Genesis logo, but dislike the European MD logo.
Mega Drive. But I only care about the Japanese brand. Beautiful logo. Blue Reset/Start buttons.
So much power. So much awesome. Sexy round cartridge edges !

This question is far too broad and can be applied to too many topics. When I think of the Sega 16-bit system, I think of the Genesis because it's what I grew up with. Which name is my favorite? I'd still go with Genesis, though I'm going to be biased there. I don't care for how Sega Mega rolls into each other, but whatever. Which system is best? I'd go with the Genesis as I'm an English speaker who appreciates its 60 Hz games. Which games do I buy? Japanese Mega Drive games thanks to the better packaging.
The name itself isn't that much of a problem for me as is the giant ass "Genesis" logo pasted over the US units. That thing is pretty awful IMO. The JP model 1 design aged much better IMO even if only for the fact it doesn't have a giant ass logo like that screwing it up.
No way, without the logo, the system looks way too plain. The Japanese version sort of makes up for it with the bigger 16BIT but the euro version makes it even worse by taking away the little bit of color on the circle and making it white. So cheap looking and awful.
Brazilian Mega Drive units have PAL casing, Genesis ring and a slightly modified Genesis motherboard. Mine has a "IC BD M5 VA4 USA" motherboard.
Funny enough I would prefer no 16-BIT at all on the console top. I find it ugly. The enormous one on Japanese consoles kind of bother me more than the smaller one on PAL units ... But taste is something everyone has their own.
I personally love how the Japanese Megadrive looks. I love random silly words on my consoles. I also like off-color buttons, like blue reset buttons on the Japanese Model 1's or the red power/reset/start buttons on the Model 2's.
Ug... Now I want a model 1 HDG with a blue reset button and red cartridge doors...*drool*
Mega Drive to me always sounded like the name you'd see on one of those cheap knockoff consoles that claims "736 in 1!" with 320 of them variations of Tetris.
I think since its just two regular words is part of why I feel that way. Most other systems in my life have been named with less common names. Nintendo, Saturn, Dreamcast, and so on.
Uh.....
Nintendo Entertainment System which is often referred to as Nintendo.
Super Nintendo Entertainment System which is often referred to as Super Nintendo.
Nintendo 64 which is... well, Nintendo plus a number.
Nintendo is in the name of those consoles. I didn't think I had to spell that out because that is extremely common knowledge.
Also, I have no idea how often I use the word mega, but despite being small time astronomy nerd, I know I can go a week or two without using the word Saturn in normal conversation. Maybe longer if I avoid the ancient Roman religions neighborhood.
If I may, just diverting the topic for a second,
Why wasn't "Mega Drive" used as the name in NA? I've heard something along the lines of a trademark dispute. Is that right? Dispute with whom?
Cheers for that. :)
So this then was the original MEGADRIVE. :p

For the record I see the PAL logo as synonymous with getting slower, letter boxed stuff a year later than the rest of the world, so that colours my perception right there unfortunately. Objectively it isn't bad.
I don't mind the Japanese redesign, blue looks a hell of a lot better than the ugly red border of later NTSCU releases, and the original 'MEGA DRIVE' font is used anyway.
I prefer Mega Drive better, especially when it comes to the logo and japanese covers it had.
IMO they sound equally awesome. I'm not biased towards either side because I never really grew up with one, but IF I did it would be Genesis.
In my opinion, many of the Japanese covers have terrible design. Even if the art is good, everything is all over the place, it's so busy, and I don't know what I'm looking at. As opposed to Genesis, where most of the time, you get great art in a classy minimalist design (either black grid or red stripe). As for the name, Genesis is so much better at getting across that this was Sega's fresh start. It's such an iconic and memorable name. Mega Drive sounds like a cheesy racing game title to me.

I'm impressed that it's almost a tie on a forum where most of the users are actually from the Genesis region.
