Growing Up Black In China - A CNN story about a young girl named Lou Jing who was born with an African-American father and a Chinese mother. She currently lives in China and deals with the stereotypes and racism that follows her.

With a name like Lan Di living in California did you ever suffer any racism? My one american friend really has no tolerance for even the slightest english mistakes.
When I lived in Virginia, we picked a bad spot... there were two groups living there: the former slaves, and the former slave owners, and THAT'S how they referred to each other, even after a hundred years. If you want great diversity and good relations among the races in the US, you usually need to pick a town with a big international university. The uni I attended was that way.

It depends on how rural the area is - there are places in Virginia where it's not that way... and we didn't live there at first. Spent four years on a farm in rural Virginia, and THAT'S where nothing has changed. The people there were born, lived, and died without ever going more than 20 miles from home. They had been there since long before the Civil War, and if your family hadn't been there at least 100 years, you were newcomer-scum, and treated as such. Growing up the was a Chinese lady and Black man couple going to my Church. They had two mixed kids. They seemed pretty normal to me. This was in CA of course and not China. It will always be harder though in country's with 99 percent of people the same race. In Japan it is similar. Not much motivation for equal treatment of minorities in country's with 99 percent of people the same race. In Japan I was refused entry into a few establishments solely because I was white. I thought wow imagine this happening in the US. But I can understand culturally where it comes from. I don't hate them for it. But I was sure pissed of when I was younger. Hopefully as a country we can set a better example for the rest of the world.
Japanese culture has some major xenophobia. I've met plenty of japanese people who admit this.
