Ace have you get your hands on the Retron5 yet?
Bumpalicious!
So... Does anyone have any info on that Game Gear adapter they were going to release in December of last year for the Retron 5. I kept it in the back of my mind, then just realized it has not yet been released.
I normally don't emulate; but if they do manage to add Game Gear support for the Retron 5, I'm sold!
There has been no new news about the Retron Game Gear adapter.
However the RetroFreak Sega 8-bit adapter is advertised to release on May 31. That adapter has also seen some delays, so no telling if it will really release on May 31 or not.
^repped!
So not only does it use stolen code from other authors' emulators, it's also picky on what games it will play. Wow, just wow. Anyone know if these have been hacked yet? I'd only snap one up if it has.
EDIT: A quick search is only showing the ability to load roms off SD via IPS patching. Sod that.
I don't know about stolen emulators and whatever else. What I do know is that for the year and a half that I've owned the R5 I've really enjoyed it.
The translation patch feature is great.
And it's an awesome space saver as well.
I've got the "revised" model, so no death grip on the carts either.
You can play (via a cart adapter) Mark III games, as well as those MyCard games via an Card Catcher cart.
No official support for the 32X as yet, but everyone's favorite mushroom shaped module can still be used (if, for whatever reason, you wanted to) on the R5 as a pass-thru device for Genesis games.
In terms of controllers, the official wireless Sega pads work with it. And mainly that's what I use.
No SG 1000 support (yet; I'm hopeful that will change), at least not when I tried a SG 1000 card. F16 Fighting Falcon works, tho'.
I'm still running my RetroN5 on firmware v1.31 (yes, it's old, I know) and I can play SG-1000 games no problem on this thing. However, I will note you CANNOT fit the Japanese Mega Adaptor in the Genesis slot without disassembling the adapter because the rectangular shape of the cartridge physically prevents it from fitting in the RetroN5. That rounded cartridge slot was a stupid design choice, quite clearly done without considering the Japanese Mega Adaptor.
Retron 5 custom firmware being tested.

If this CFW works the way I think, it should allow for complete control of the console. This could be the first step in opening up so many possibilities for the hardware! This could potentially mean installing updated and better-tweaked emulators, or even some more out-of-the-box ideas like using the Retron5 simply as a cartridge dumper when hooked directly to a PC.
