Is Shadow The Hedgehog really as bad as people say it is?

Its been almost 8 years since I pre-ordered and brought Shadow The Hedgehog for Xbox from GameStop and got both a Beanie and Prima Strategy guide free. I've only beaten several story arcs and haven't played the game in 7 years.

My memories of the game are pretty fresh now in days. I recall it being a very linear and slow game with numerous indicators that the project itself was rushed. The game itself felt solid but its learning curve felt like it wasn't as easy to get into as people wanted. The storyline is elaborate and I can commend the voice acting which is not too shabby(though this was the start of the much loathed NYAV team).


What are some of your thoughts? Memories? And which version have you played?

It was Sega of America's idea. At the time, SEGA had signed several contracts and multiple outsourced development deals for Xbox 360 and PS3. For Holiday 2005, SEGA was trying to focus its energy on Sonic Next Gen and had plans to develop the game completely from the ground up exclusively for Xbox 360. SOA thought that a TPS/Hybrid starring Shadow was a great idea for a "Qouta Sonic game for the year". Problem was, SEGA only gave the project 8 months of development time.

Got PS2 version bought it when price dropped to 20.00 at Target. I was in "Sega always makes great Sonic games mode" So I tried it and got past first and second stage and I think i left it at that. Ill try it again someday.

Wasn't just that; Shadow was made on the cheap, as was Sonic Adventure 2, but they went even cheaper with StH. It's got some good levels (Sky Troops being my fave), but the game's a stinker.

Sonic Adventure 2 was in development for over 2 years. It certainly wasn't cheap. Sonic Team just changed several things at the last minute because they felt bad for what was happening to SEGA. Now the Gamecube port was definitely made on the cheap.

I liked STH, though I'll admit the game probably hasn't gotten any better with time.

Nope, it was made on the cheap. They spend far less dosh on SA2 than they did with it's predecessor. Far less. I still think Adventure 2 is the best 3d Sonic game, tho.

At the time SA2 was developed, SEGA was bleeding money and taking huge losses, CSK Enterprises(their badly run parent company) had already begin to cut budget for newer Dreamcast projects. So while SA2 had a lower budget than, Sonic Adventure 1, it certainly doesn't feel cheap and there was plenty of effort that was put into it.


The GC extras(music, mini games e.t.c) were originally planned as DLC content for Sega Net alongside an extra Disc( ala..Nights.)

Agreed, but that still doesn't change the fact that they were on a stricter budget than SA1.

By mid 1999, SEGA only had $800 million in cash left(they currently have $3.5 billion and if their 2012 fiscal revenue goes up to $6 billion they could have up nearly $7 billion which logically would be better spent on plenty of other things besides newer IPs) so further new Dreamcast in house projects were on tight budgets.

In fact the DC itself was developed,released and launched on a tight budget. The GD-ROM discs are delicate and the lens and controllers feel a bit cheap.

No they were. They left SEGA with $3 billion dollars worth of debt. And THREE major hardware failures. Discontinuing the Dreamcast also was bad for investors. Isao Okawa forgave some of the debt, but EVEN by 2004, when SegaSammy merged, SEGA still had debt. Which took them 5 YEARS to pay off.

Just give it a rest.
