All SEGA had to do was stick with the Teen rating, and the zingers wouldn't have been so pretentious & lame. Its almost like TMNT the movie.
@Kool Kitty. I'm sure Shadow would have used other foul words had the game kept its Teen rating.

The directing and fair chunk of dialog screwed that up . . . the premise/plots weren't inherently bad in general . . . a few stand-out stupid plot points including some unnecessary demystification, but far more a problem in execution and large portions of dull/wooden characters and bland/stupid/obtuse dialog. The fact that most of the cast was made of genuinely good and capable actors accentuates just how much was down to the directing too.
Honestly, several of the prequel-derived video games had better directed actors in them. :p
In the case of Shadow though, again I honestly liked the overall idea of the character and the game's fundamental premise . . . (hell, it's one of the very few GC games we actually bought new -not at launch, but not used) the execution screwed that up in several ways in the end though, and that's something I've come to appreciate more in retrospect. Back then, playing the game as a 16 year old with my 12 year old brother, both being fond of Sonic Adventure 2 (Battle), we had plenty of fun, and even some fun in the multiplayer, at the time I remember liking it significantly more than Sonic Heroes (which we'd rented and played mostly through -not quite to the final ending though . . . had to finish Chaotix iirc) and felt it was a half-decent follow on to Adventure 2. I always kind of associated it with MDK given the dark and surreal/comic art/level design and 3rd person shooter platformer elements.
I honestly don't remember the controls being much more problematic than Adventure 2, and less painful than Heroes overall (or at least more forgiving level design to compensate for that).
I think it's good enough to merit its existence, but in restrospect it definitely could have been executed much better in many aspects. (I have a munch of complaints about Heroes too though, and that's a much more well-liked game) For me, it's still more fun than the on-rails Wii games (Secret Rings and Black Knight), and more fun than Colors (not sure about Unleashed, but probably), and close to Heroes with varying trade-offs. I haven't tried Generations yet, so I can't comment there . . . and I technically haven't tried '06 myself, but I'm familiar enough to be confident that Shadow is better than that too. :p
Personally, I'm still waiting for Sonic Adventure 3 . . . or rather any Sega/Sonic platformer with mechanics in line with SA2, but actually improved upon in general without changing the formula entirely. (a LOT of tweaks and improvements that could be made over those . . . maybe including some of the features from more recent games, but not necessary either -personally, I really dislike the quicktime events, booting, and drifting of Unleashed/Colors and Generations had it too, but apparently more moderated at least . . . that and some sound effects are annoying too)
On a side-note, I kind of find it ironic that Sonic '06 decided to keep the vehicle gimmick for Shadow and drop the weapons . . . where the vehicles sucked in Shadow and sucked again in '06 (pointless and frustrating) while the gun mechanics actually worked reasonably well, and might have merited a place in '06 even more so given the removal of a normal jump attack . . . then again, the removal of that was stupid and lame like many aspects of '06. (seriously, the removed the oldest and most fundamental way of dealing damage in a Sonic platformer)
The question isn't so much whether he'd have a bigger profane vocabulary, but whether it would have actually been used reasonably in dialog.
It certainly may have been the case that the rating change was a major part of that, but there's also the generally rushed nature of the game, the budget, etc . . . and the overall direction. I'm sure it's some combination of all that, but it's hard to say what's more to blame. (I'm sure the late-design change exacerbated all that though) Again, SA2 did a great job with a limited timescale and budget as such . . . so direction could certainly come into play. (that and Shadow had a lot more CGI cutscenes used too, so probably a chunk of the budget going there)
It's fun to say: bitchin'

C'mon guys... Shadow the hedgehog? Guns? Bikes?
It doesn't matter how good the gameplay could have been or how impressive the graphics are or how good or bad the game is overall. Its a ridiculous idea that only manages to impress 5 year olds. They try too hard to be "cool", "edgy" and "gangsta" but in the most immature and embarrassing way possible. They just use every cliche and trope without caring if it fits with the Sonic universe or not. And they never try to be subtle or anything, just be as loud and "in your face" as possible to attract young children. So, in the end its not just kid friendly, in the same way Mario games are that both kids and adults can enjoy, its just a game for kids who can't detect immaturity yet... Its exactly this type of approach that destroyed the Sonic franchise imo.
^^^This is how I feel. It's like if a 12 year old PS2 kiddy got to design a sonic game.
Because then a game about an evil dark emo clone version of Sonic who think's he's the Terminator would have been a hit?
The entire premise reaks of overcompensating, all for a quick buck, even a billion curse words and adult rating would not have saved
this trainwreck of a "game".
Shadow The Hedgehog, its the Terminator FOR BABIES!
One time a mother was all like, damn I really liked this terminator movie, if only there was something like it
for my 2 year old baby who still poops himself, what's that Sega? you made the terminator for little babies who
love cute cuddly furry animals? its called Shadow the Hedgehog? wow how awesome!
I'd say this game is as bad as everyone says it is, even if you take out the fact that it's 'dark & edgy' it's still a crap game underneath.
