Remember when you got your Genesis?

Do you remember the day you got your Genesis for the first time, not knowing what to expect from the machine?

It was 1994 for me, I was about 8 at the time.. Me and my father were finishing up delivering news papers, and he brought me to the store. He wouldn't say what he was doing. Then he went to the Electronics section, and asked for the Sega Genesis.. (it was a model 2 including Sonic 2). I remembered playing one before (a model 1, and i didn't know at the time, they were the same, I thought my father was buying the "wrong" one), but didn't know if I'd like it...

Brought it home, and the day it was hooked up, I've been hooked up to it, ever since.. I still play to this day.. Though my model 2 from that day has been retired and given to my mother as a CD-player (with a dead Sega CD that only plays music CDs)..

I now use a Model 1 with a working Sega CD and a 32X.. I have the "setup" I dreamed about, in 1996 (might have been 1995)...

It was Yule Eve 1994 or 1995, I was 9 or 10. My brother got Sonic 1, I got Sonic 2. We shared the model 1 unit. I cried when my parents wouldn't plug it in immediately :D.

Christmas morning. My brother and I opened a gift, and it was NHL '93 for Genesis. Since we only had an NES, we knew that grandma had made a mistake and got the wrong game. Then we opened a genesis that we totally didn't expect. It was very awesome. Later we found out that she did make a mistake, she was trying to get a NES game, it was just luck that we also got a genesis that same day.

I got mine for x-mas 1992 (along with "Sonic 2"), but i knew i was going to get it.

Before this point i was going to get 3 "classic" games for my NES (Zelda, Zelda 2, & Metroid) but I had decided that I wanted a new game system instead of getting more games for my "old" system i'd been playing for a few years.

My mom bought me the Genesis, told me she would get Sonic 2 when it came out, and returned the NES games later. The rest is history.

I can't remember the year, it was around the time new MD2s cost around £100. It was a Christmas morning. It included the six game cart with Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Shinobi etc.

I bought my Mega Drive when I was 10 and had saved up my pocket money for months in order to buy it! It came with Mega Games 2 and I also bought a copy of Sonic 2. My first time on Sonic 2 was awesome and I got all the way to the Mystic Cave Zone before I had to turn the console off and go to a friend's party (I never forgave him for being born on the same day I bought a Mega Drive - what a git). Later I also discovered the awesomeness of the Mega Games 2 cart. I loved my Mega Drive.

Yea it was christmas morning of I believe '95. I remember how amped I was opening the one box to see a sega genesis, and how much more amped I was when I opened a second present and saw that it was all the Sega Channel equipment. I was on Sega Channel so much that I came home one day and my dad told me he "accidentally broke" the sega and I couldn't use it anymore. Being 8 years old and dumb I believed him until I bought another sega off of ebay a few years ago. When it came and I plugged it in it didnt work right so i was like "Hmm ill check my old cables and see if they work better." Turns out, everything on my sega still worked and my Dad pulled the worst ownage on me ever. He doesn't even remember he told me it broke thats how owned i got.

I still miss Sega Channel :( :( :(

it was either christmas of 91 or 92, but it was the year that sonic 1 had hit the genesis. Either way, it was a wonderful christmas, getting my model 1 genesis with the orignal sonic.:p

I got mine right after Sonic the Hedgehog became a pack in game. It was super-early on a weekday morning, and my mom, dad, grandparents, and I (wow, I don't even think my sister was born yet), and we all went to the Software Etc. at our local mall and bought the Genesis and Ghostbusters for it. Oddly enough, the whole thing was my dad's idea.

It was back in September or so 1989 and I was a junior in high school. Since I was busy going to school and all, I gave my grandmother the money to pick the system up for me. She tried every day (it had no official release date that was relayed to the public). Then one day after arriving home from school (I took the bus to her house and waited there for my mom to pick me up after work) she jumped out of the kitchen and exclaimed "I got it!" Then began my Genesis days. That was on a Wednesday or Thursday I believe. That Saturday I purchased Thunder Force 2 (best launch game available). Ghouls n' Ghosts wouldn't be available for at least another month. I still have that same system, but sadly my grandmother passed away almost two years ago.

Seventh birthday present, 1994. I had wanted a Sega Genesis since I had played my cousin's, with Sonic the Hedgehog and Ecco the Dolphin. So when I got home from school that day to open my presents, there was a shiny Genesis with a Sonic 2 pack-in. I remember only getting to play to the Chemical Plant Zone because my parents had a very strict "no games on school nights" policy which they only slackened enough for me to try out my new Genesis.

Either Christmas of 1992, or 1993. I think it was Christmas 1992... yeah. I got it with SOR2, as I got the SOR2 Bundle. And Cool Spot, and another game that I later sold off and do not recall anymore. :(

I mailed out for Sonic 2, with the ofter included with the Genesis... and the rest is history. I honestly do not recall a whole bunch about when the Genesis was alive and kicking anymore. There's some stuff I haven't forgotten, but fwiw, most of the memories are gone. :(

I do remember when my folks had to go on vacation for a week or something, and I took my Genesis to my grandparents house. I know it was in 1995, becuase my Grandma was downstairs watching the OJ Simpson Trial. Sadly, my grandparents separated recently, and I don't know where my grandma is located. Even worse, I knew it was always going to happen. :(

Remember in Dickie Roberts, where Rob Reiner ask David Spade to act like a 6 year old climbing down the steps to see a big red bike under the christmas tree? Yeah, just replace" Big, red bike" with " New Sega Genesis", and add authentic excitement about it.

It was the year 1993. From September on, I had asked my dad for a SNES, because I used to hear about Nintendo at preschool ,and wanted to be one of the "cool" kids. But my dad instead would just explain that the Genesis had better graphics than the SNES. He'd even take me to Sears to try out Kid Chamleon and Fatal Labyrinth. He'd even call me in the room when a Genesis commercial came on. So, by October, I was demanding a Genesis.

November, I get so desperate I call my grandma and ask for a Genesis that day. She actually goes to the store and almost buys me one, but unfortunatly, my mom was at the same K-Mart and wouldn't let her. I was punished from TV for a week( except for my dad showing me Genesis commercials)

December. It's cold. I want a Genesis. I hear stories about Nintendo, and tell them there all wrong. They laugh. I learn my first swear from some kid saying the Genesis "sucks".

Christmas eve, I sit infront of the TV, waiting for the 11'0'clock news so I can get to bed(Dick Goddard demanding kids to go to bed for Santa is a Clevelanders only delight). I ask for the Genesis one more time before I go off to bed, i'm told the infamous" we'll see" and go to bed. I wake my 4-year old brother up, and ask him to ask for a Genesis, he doesn't seem to care, and fall backs to sleep. I go to bed, soon forgetting about Christmas and dream about my dogs running in a Sonic 2 commercial( don't ask how I somehow remember this).

Christmas morning, I walk down the steps, make a waffle, and sit and watch TV in the living room. The tree is strewn with gifts, but i'm used to the rule of waiting for everyone to get up first before gifts can be opened. ( I declare NEVER to subject my future kids to that torture). Soon, I get tired of waiting and poke my brother so he cries and wakes up the whole house. We get in the living room, and I run for the huge box in the middle, but i'm told not to touch that one yet. I open random gifts of clothes, tapes, and some dinosaur book. Then, there were two presents left, the big box and some small thing on the side.

I go for the big box again, but I get the smaller one shoved in my face. I open it hastily, and out pops a second party Genesis controller! I automaticly jump up and down screaming that the "Big Box is the Genesis!". I get so excited that I start hitting my brother, who was sitting on my moms lap. He starts crying, and I have to get a TIME OUT. The worst possible time for one! I sit on the couch, staring at the box, just wanting to rip the fucker open. Eventually, my brother calms down, and i'm allowed back to the tree. I rip open the box, and there it was. A Genesis 2 and Sonic 2. I shoved it my dads face asking him to set it up. He did so, and I played Sonic 2 within seconds of him saying he was done. I just sat amazed at Sonic and Tails jumping out of the screen. The only other game experince I had was playing the 2600. I never thought about it as one being better, but just diffrent.

Within day one of trying out all the modes, and learning that the controller you have has to be plugged into the right spots for it to work, and getting to act 2 of Chemical Plant Zone, I was beat. Course, a quick 2 hour nap had me playing again at 2 AM, with the sound down. I still was never caught with climbing out of bed in the middle of the night.

Oh yeah, I also got Bart Vs. the Space Mutants that day( me being a Simpsons fanatic), but it was quickly sold a few days later for R.B.I. Baseball '93 and BattleToads.

I know I wasn't the only kid that cried when they realized that Bart's voice was done by a girl.

Back to my LORE, the next few years were full of ridicule at school for having a Genesis instead of a SNES. I didn't care, I was playing World of Illusion( and almost beating it everytime) and Kid Chamleon, so they could screw them selves.

Over the years, I got new systems, new intrests, but I never sold my Genesis. It was my friend when shitty things happend in my life.

There was a 5 year peroid of having NO new Genesis games. I hadn't really found out about the wonders of Funcoland, and no one was donating Genesis game to the Goodwill/Thriftstore, so I concentrated on PS1 and Gameboy for a while. I eventually boxed up my Genesis*GASP*, losing intrest.

But one day in mid 2002, my brother decided to set it up again in the basement. I had about 30 something games with it. By this time, Funcoland was around my house. I went into the Funcoland and grabbed a copy of Ristar, and it slowely started coming back to me. Now, i'm up to 89 games as of right now. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thanks Sega, for making a great system, thats helped me through out the last 8+ years of my life.

I'll also share when I got a Genesis model 1..

For the hole time I had a model 2 Genesis, I always remembered in my head, there being another model, one that was bigger, and looked stranger...

Years pass, 2000 comes, still didn't learn anything about this "strange" model I remember.. My father ends up telling me that I must be confused or something..

Since I didn't know what to call it, I couldn't actually figure out what it was called. One day, in 2002, in a thrift store, I saw it.. The model I remebered from years ago, and it was plain as day when it said "Sega Genesis" on it and had the volume slider, and everything.. I immediately brought it over to my father and showed it to him, he was shocked that I was right, there WAS another model of the same system.. I told him I was gonna get it.

There was only one problem, this model was selling for 10 dollars, as is, and the power switch felt "funny".. I bought it anyway, sure that I'd be able to fix it..

I bring it home, and look for a DC adapter for it (it came with non), and couldn't.. 5 months pass and I finally found a DC adapter that would work. Then I was stunned, I couldn't turn it on! I completely forgot about that funny feeling power switch.. I was starting to get sad, because I wanted to use THIS one, not my model 2 (which my 32X fitted better in the model 1 too, as I didn't have that "spacer" for the model 2)...

I got so impatient, I took it apart, and there it was.. The plastic piece that holds the plastic switch in place, fell off.. I super glued it together, and waited a couple hours.. Screwed it back together, crossed my finger, turned it on, and there it was, "SEEEGGGAAAAAAA" with Sonic 2 in the cartridge port..

And oh yea, this was the first time I heard the Genesis in Stereo, because all I had for my model 2 Genesis was mono AV cables... (and i was lucky my 32X came with that rare adapter to use it in the model 1 genesis)..

I still use THIS model today.. This one has gone through a crap load of modifications, and still works great like I first powered it up..

I always figured this was some weak ass method to punishment.

i got mine about 1 month after NHL Hockey came out, but i wont tell you how i got it ;)

It descended from above on small billowing cloud. The sound of thunder could be heard as the first Genesis game you thought of magically appeared in your outstretched hand.

That game was NHL Hockey.

Thats weak shit.

Even a "go to your room" would have been better than a silly ass "time out".

Back in the day my Mom took my Sega Master System, made me pack it up into the box and she kept it in her closet until my grades improved or some such non-important thing. Of course I removed the SMS from the box and put books or other items in it to give the box weight. I beat Space Harrier for the first time when I wasn't even supposed to be playing the system. That was the first game I beat ever. I was so happy and I couldn't even gloat.

Yeah, I had my NES taken away when my grades were bad. Never worked because I just waited until school was done and played it all summer long. :D

Too bad they it never dawned on them that the reason my grades were so sucky was because I hated school and all the people who went there. :bang:

How could I forget. It was about a week past my 13th birthday. I was returning from Toronto, Canada with my uncle and cousin. There's a gift waiting for me in my room. It was the Genesis 2 model, complete with Sonic 2. Man, I was stoked to have a Genesis. I'd been pro-SNES before I even owned a SNES but when my friend showed me Sonic The Hedgehog, my eyes were opened.

But like a fool, I latered traded in my Genesis and the few games I owned. But in 2001, the same friend that introduced me to Sonic gave me his model 1 Genesis and all of his games, including Streets of Rage. Just gave 'em to me, no charge. Since then, I've amassed a niced size colleciton of Genesis games and I continue to look for many great titles I missed out on as a kid.

i don't actually remember the year, '90 or '91-me and my older brother got it for xmas (still got it), it was the megadrive mkI with sonic as a pack in game, altered beast and an extra pad.

mom was out xmas eve with work chums and my uncle came round to 'babysit', mom told us we could open it at 9 and play till she got back.

never been so amazed! we played altered beast first as we could both play at the same time (prising the pad from my uncle was quite hard!) the opening music to altered beast still sticks with me, and i think it's the game i revisit the most (aside from street fighter) the game could speak!! the colours ware ace, we had our own arcade machine!!! and it was gorgeous-sleek and black and clearly from the future!

my current setup is a model 2 with mega cd 2

to this day i've never been as excited about a console, maybe it's cuz i was really young- or maybe as this was something that really felt like a huge leap (not sure why, had been plaing amiga games for a while at this point).

New to the forums and figured this would be an excellent place for my first post.

It was Christmas 1992 when I opened up the present that turned out to be a Sega Genesis (model 1, of course). Times had been rough emotionally for me because my parents had just recently divorced, but my mom, whom I was living with, had just got a new job, which, in turn, had made life a little bit easier. For Christmas she decided to get me the one thing I'd been asking for for so long and, needless to say (but I'll say it anyway), it was fantastic.

I believe Sega had a promotion at the time where the system came with Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, so that's what I got.

I remember being so excited to finally play the system at home; to have one of my own. It was awesome and still one of the best memories of my childhood.

I got mine in the Sonic the Hedgehog bundle for christmas in 1992. Good times. I still have the same one. It has seen me through many a hard sesh.

I forget exactly what year it was, but I'm sure if I went back to my family's christmas videos I would find out. It was christmas sometime on or before 1994 and I was seven or so. I had been playing the store display genesis consoles for almost a year and really wanted one, but with a two dollar allowance there was no way in hell i'd be able to afford it. I watched the sonic cartoons even, I just really wanted to have one and finally my parents surprised me that christmas with it. It's a model 2, and I'm going back and buying the games i didn't know about or wasn't old enough to appreciate/understand (rpgs etc.).

The first sonic game I ever played on it was sonic 3, and I played it so much my parents thought I had pink eye. My genesis was and is more than a just a system to me though. It was my only friend as an elementary school aged child, who read far too many nonfiction books and enjoyed learning too much to be accepted as "normal", so I was always ostricized. But I knew that once I got home from it all, my genesis was there. And it still is there, the same exact one I first ever played, with the same controllers I first played it with, and all the games i got with it. I still play the console today, and take as good care of it as I possibly can.

Got mine Christmas 1989, and I was lucky enough to get Thunderforce 2 with it. I always thought it was funny that people were telling me, "you gotta get a Genesis and try out Sonic!!!!" and I had been playing mine for damn near two years before Sonic showed his face.

i forgot the year, but it was at the really beginning of the megadrive in europe in think 1991. At that time i was an arcade addict so was i a sega maniac , i was owning a C64 and a master system.

The video game magazine at that time i was reading (tilt, famous french mag) got lots of test and reviews of The revenge of shinobi, super monaco gp, shadow dancer and i was dreaming of the md specialy for super monaco gp (was fan of the arcade). Being poor at that time ^^ i sold my master system and works during the christmas vacation. but it was still not enought (need 350$ for the pack with altered beast) so i convinced my dad to lend me the money as i'd be working during summer vacation. And he agree !!

i bought my megadrive in february , and then the huge shock, it was arcade at home (mostly ^^), then 1 week after i bought revenge of shinobi and nowadays i still got that megadrive which is full of my gamer's life memories ;)

Yes, i remember when i won my Genesis.

I won my video game in my 13th birthday in 1992.

The Genesis is named Mega Drive in Brazil ( my country ), and other countries.

My aunt is brought the console during her travel to USA.

The console is arrived to my home 2 weeks after my birthday with Sonic the Hedgehog pack in.

Beyond the console with Sonic my aunt bought a second controller and three games: Granada, Ghouls and Ghosts and Truxton.

The sensation is good, because my dream comes true after one year played the console in video game rental shops; but the games are appeared in black and white in television, because in my country uses the PAL-M in opposite to NTSC used in Japan and USA.

One week after, i send my console to transcodificate to NTSC for PAL-M.

And my games appeared to colors in my TV.

It was augest 1998 I recived a sega genesis/CD and I was so happy. I got madden 97 sega 6 pak and nfl qarterbackclub 96.

I got mine when me and my dad went to an electronics convention, and SEGA had a booth to promote the Genises. Dad had the cash on hand, and that one was one of the most wonderful days of my entire childhood. :D

I started playing mine in 1998 it was a blast.

1992. I saved up for several months and bought a Genesis at Electronics Boutique for a bit over $160 which had Sonic as a pack-in. I even got my mom and sister to play it and they used to hate video games.

92 as well.
got it for Xmas for a job well done on that whole 4th grade thing.

1991. One of my friends (who quickly became my best friend) owned a Mega Drive and we spent hours on Sonic the Hedgehog - nothing was better than that game.

I got one for Christmas '93.

Simply put, '93 the best year of my life. Ever.

No actully I was 6 years old and my father was dying in the hospital.

1989 when the console was first released. I am teh pioneer.
