Sonic at his best is better than Mario IMO

I hope being on a sega forum more people will agree with me.


Usually whenever I say things like that most forums just laugh and me and call me names. They never actually debate my claim, they just turn into bullies and pick on me. But I am a big boy of 21 years and I don't let it get to me. I would just like rational discussion over this.


I would much rather dig out my copy of Sonic 2 than Super Mario World. As a little kid growing up in the late 90s, I knew more people who had Genesis, so I was familiar with Sonic. My first memories however are playing SMB on NES. I had a babysitter that had SMB 3 on NES, and while I certainly believe it is a great game, I just never got into it as much as other people.


I didn't care for the Happy Cheerful style that Mario was going for, it felt like something my little brother should play, and remember I was a youngling myself at this point. Nobody ever actually did anything bad in Mario, in fact the most evil person in the entire game IS Mario.

When I finally got to play Sonic in the late 90s it was amazing. Here was a game with attitude. The Rock music, the speed, the platforming, I loved it. Later Sonic games would add to the storyline, and even bring in newer darker characters like Shadow. Everybody knows the Genesis was aimed at the teenage audience, and this game felt like it. As I was the older sibling of the house, I felt like I should be playing Sonic over Mario, and I felt that without ever watching a commercial.


Now, I have yet to play Sonic 3. I honestly believe that Sonic 2 is better than any Mario game, and while a few years back Sonic hit a major slump and all he released was crap, he's been back on the rise, and his games are good again.

Thoughts, comments?

id rather not play either mostly because i dont like platformers
however sonic's hey days were in the 16 bit era
most of his games until generations and colors were of ....average quality to be polite
mario on the other hand has been consistently good
( if starting to get rather old with nintendo under iwata being content to repeat the same thing over and over again )

Yep. Sonic Generations is solid too. Sonic All Star Racing Transformed trumps every Mario Kart. Anyone with a brain can see that! And I like Nintendo!

Fuck it. I say it beats every Mario Kart. Sega is legendary for their arcade racers.

mario is more about slower exploration ( especially mario 64 )

and id debate the mario kart claim mario kart 64 DD and ds were excellent ( and the cpu wasnt that much of a cheap fucking cheating bastard )

Apples vs Oranges stuff IMO

I much prefer gameplay of Sonic but I heave beaten almost all the Mario games I have and never really thought of anything negative. SMB2 / DokiDokiPanic is my fav from the Mario bunch. Sonic3(&K) from the other side.

oh i can think about something negative to say about mario
it mostly concerns its pissant plot
the "character" of peach ( or the vacuum where a character is supposed to be )

and the lack of a save function in smb 3 ( something im also missing in sonic 1 and 2 )

Well, the Mario series was definitely one of the pioneers for 3D platform games.

i liked sonic adventure ( still do ) but god damn it has some problems

all that and more and its a shame because underneath all that crap there is a decent game

Big and Froggy light up blunts in the Mystic Ruins. That's why he hasn't been in another game as a playable character(other than an unlockable in multi-player in SA2). Big just said, "Fuck it. Froggy, let's light this shit up!" He's been there ever since.

the whoel fishing thing kind of sorta worked in zelda oot ( not very well i may add )
but i always skip big's section in sa mostly because its assinine unfunny and usually makes me want to throw my controller

How on earth is Sonic vs Mario apples vs oranges? They are both the mascots of their respected platforms, they are both platformers, they were huge competitors back in the day, both of them recieved top marks in their prime. I could do this all day.

It should be Red Apples vs Green Apples if anything.

Just to make it clear:

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a masterpiece , best 2D platafformer that i've played.

Also, Sonic Adventure 2 kicks-ass on the Dreamcast (i've been looking for a copy for a reasonable price for quite some time).

I meant Apples and Oranges in the way that they are both platformers, but don't play alike.

Transformed doesn't pander to Nintendo worshiping, bratty, spoiled children with profane language learned from their morally bankrupt parents, that have no familiarity with white knuckle arcade racing games of the past, or Sega's history.

Mario Kart is like driving in an oval with no opposition. Transformed is like Formula 1, GT, WRC...

Good gameplay is good gameplay. A game could have a theme of flying turds for all I care, as long as the gameplay is refined, great and fun that's all that matters. I played and loved both mario and sonic growing up. Still to this day I play both series of games. Of course if we're talking about the mario / sonic games released after the snes / genesis I've never played a single one...except mario 64.

Personally I like both equally, Sonic is a fast paced action game which relies a lot on skill, while Mario World gives me more bang for my buck, and is more of an adventure.

As for the newer games.. Mario games seemed to translate much better to 3D then Sonic, and no, Sonic is not back on the rise.

I agree, the Genesis Sonic games are better than the Mario games. I say that as a pretty huge fan of the Mario games; the original Sonic trilogy is just that good. They're the best 2d platformers ever period, and I haven't seen much else get close. It comes down to two things: Complex and satisfying level design, and great control and physics. There are enough alternate paths to keep the levels fresh pretty much forever, and they feel natural instead of artificial. On the second point, being Sonic is just fun. It's a dream. Rolling around loops and slopes - if you compare it to other platformers, even good ones, it's like the other games have no interaction with the environment at all. I've seen a few other platformers approach the Sonic series's level of stage design (Earthworm Jim, for example) but I haven't seen any get close to the feel of it.

3D Mario blows away 3D Sonic and always has, especially during the period (Heroes, Shadow, 06) where the 3D Sonic games out-and-out sucked. Even the original Sonic Adventure is kind of a mess, and although the Sonic/Shadow levels of SA2 are great fun, they don't hold a candle to the worlds of 3D Mario. Generations is a great game, though, easily the best in the series since 1994.

Only speaking for 8/16 bit systems, I prefer Sonic to Mario. For 8 bit I like Sonic Chaos, Sonic Blast, and Sonic Triple Trouble. For 16 bit Sonic 3&K. Sonic Megamix and Knuckles in Sonic 1 I like but we are not talking about hacks. Mario games are very well made and I enjoy playing them. I just prefer the Sonic games.

Why would you discuss modern sonic games on a 16 bit sega forum in the "genesis does" section?

Old-School Sonic certainly beats Old-School Mario, which is a real accomplishment since Old-School Mario was really really good. I'd say the main problem is that the real competition was SMB 2 & 3 vs Sonic 1 & 2 & 3 to me, not SMW vs Sonic, SMW doesn't even register to me against Sonic, total no contest.

I don't get that, Sonic was a simple game, you ran from left to right and either tried to get as many rings as you could or get the fastest speed,
with Super Mario World you could also try to find secrets, which sometimes required some puzzling thinking, which really added to the game imo.

The Sonic games were nice, but Mario World with its small 4megabit cartridge still offered way more to do then any Genesis Sonic game.

I agree with you. Also, i respectfully disagree with those who say that Sonic is just speed, running from point A to B.When you play Sonic, you can aproach it in different ways: like a racing game, trying to clear the levels as fast as possible; explore the stages , trying to find different paths, hidden items etc. or try to score as much points as possible.The chaos emeralds also adds to the package. Sonic 3 & Knuckles, for instance, got me around 22 hours of gameplay to clear everything and i pretty sure i didn't find all hidden areas.

Holy crap...I always thought mario world was 8mbit. The only other 4mbit snes game I can think of is....vortex. I consider mario world in the same league as classic sonics and famicom mario games as well, it's very different sure, but good different.

My opinion is Mario owned the 8bit era and Sonic owned the 16Bit era.


SMB on the NES is the reason why Nintendo saved the video game crash. Sonic the Hedgehog on Genesis was the reason why there was "16bit wars" with Nintendo.

8Bit - SMB and SMB3 owns the 8bit Sonic games.

16Bit Sonic1, Sonic2 and S&K owns SMBW

After 16Bit they all suck. (I do like Sonic Generations but only because it gives you a "16bit feel"
at times)

SNES Mario games were abject tosh. I mean, Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island where I'm not playing as Mario but a chuffing dinosaur and having to carry around baby sodding Mario. Awful game.

Its still a great game with very good level design, excellent graphics and clever gameplay/puzzles.

I also liked Sonic more than Mario in the 8bit/16bit days but mostly because i liked the graphics and soundtrack more. There is also something about old school Sonic physics that makes it so difficult to put down the controller... they are simply perfect and controlling Sonic feels awesome and addicting. Something that Sega can't get right the last 15 years.

There is no denial that the good Mario platformers (SMB3, SMW and Yoshi's Island) offered more depth, secrets and exploration making them a bit more interesting overall. But Sonic 3 & Knuckles combined is still my favorite platformer though (along with Yoshi's Island). I just love the style, the levels, the music, everything.
