I think "Ouya" is the worst console or gaming system name EVER. And there have been plenty of bad ones.
I have no interest in the system itself (there's so much competition, it is unlikely to take off anyway), but am becoming apathetic about newer gen systems in general.

Hmm - that's really odd since I remember a big discussion on this with videos and everything, and this is the opposite of what I remember. Maybe I'm just phasing in and out of an alternate reality. ;) :lol:
The best way of looking at the Ouya hardware-wise is as an Android tablet in a box, with a little bit of custom software sprinkled on top. The main SoC that powers the device is exactly the same as in last year's Asus Transformer Pad Infinity. And since there's already an Ubuntu for tablets and the Ouya is easy to root, getting Ubuntu to run on this device ought to be fairly straightforward.
I like that it's so open. In that way it kind of reminds me of computers back in the 80's where you bought the machine and did what ever the hell you wanted with it. Everything is so closed and tight fisted these days, it's nice to see something going in this direction again. The name does suck, though. From the looks of it even the developers don't know how the hell they want to pronounce it. They may as well have called it the roid or something equally tacky. I agree the approach is pretty cool. And you're right, the big three are trying to find ways to lock down their consoles and lock people into them. I hope this thing does well, but I probably won't jump onboard. It's just not my thing.Quote:

Ouya has nothing to do with portable games. It's a console with an off the shelf SoC that uses an Android fork for the development environment. It's not out to benefit or compete with tablets or phone games. It's just leeching a popular OS's talent pool for it's own benefit and filling a niche demand for them with marketing that focuses on idealism. Beyond that commonly misunderstood argument, if it did just port Google Play games over, the games that are bad on the portable side of things could benefit from the nature of a console with a dedicated buttons for control anyway, so the argument about their quality wouldn't stick.Quote:

Mine is coming in the mail... got my notice a couple days ago.
Still waiting for my shipping confirmation. Supposedly all the early backer consoles have already been shipped, but they're taking their sweet time delivering those notices. To be perfectly honest I've kinda lost interest in the Ouya, so it's not like I really care that it's taking long.
